Kevin
I felt bad that I made her feel like she was a child by pulling her out of the club like that. It definitely wasn't my intention, it was just my protective instinct kicking in.
My hands on the steering wheel, my gaze shifted from the road to look at her, her face screamed sadness. She was probably having fun at the club but having fun with the enemy. My stomach churned and my knuckles tightened on the steering wheel at the thought that she was having fun with Dante of all people.
I returned my gaze back on the road. What could I possibly do that'll make her a little happy? A lot must be going on with her, that made her have to run away from the house and to go find comfort in a club.
A memory came rushing in. Ten years ago, a little friend of mine promised we'd see the Aurora lights together. She would always go on and on talking about the Aurora light, how her mom and dad would take her out to go see the Aurora lights.
At the slightest thought of the memory, I swerved the car to change directions. I remembered listening to the National oceanic and atmospheric administration (NOAA) predict that the Aurora lights will be out tonight.
Fingers crossed, I really hope they'll be out tonight.
"Why did you change direction?" Cassandra asked, looking at me for an answer.
I opened my mouth to tell her, but then I thought it would ruin the surprise so I just remained silent. I could feel her burning gaze on me, but I kept my eyes fixed on the road.
I have never been happier that she didn't argue with me regarding the change of direction. I breathe out loudly in relief.
I drove the car for about 15 minutes and stopped near a cliff and parked the car with the headlights on.
I stepped out of the car, walked towards the other side of the car, opened the door and held out my hand for her. I was being too much of a gentleman right now but if that's what will make her happy then I'd rather be a gentleman.
She took my hand and stepped out of the car smiling.
"Where are we?" She asked looking around, everywhere pitch dark.
I looked into the car and Candice was still sleeping. I closed the door behind me and walked towards Cassandra. We walked a bit further from the car.
"Just wait, any moment now!" I said excitedly, this was something i had always dreamed about and I was doing it with her.
A shiver ran through her, and she subconsciously rubbed her arm for warmth. Without hesitation I slipped off my jacket, a silent offering, and draped it around her shoulders. Her gaze met mine, intense and unreadable. I yearned to decipher the emotions swirling behind her eyes.
"See! They're out!" I exclaimed happily, pointing at the aurora lights in the sky.
She lifted her head to see the lights, she placed her hand over her mouth in shock.
"You can shout if you want tho, you know" I whispered to her ears.
With that being said, she screamed out joyfully, her voice echoing.
I watched her joyfully look at the Aurora lights. I felt fulfilled that she was happy again.
"I miss my parents" she whispered a little loud for me to hear.
Damn it, bringing back old memories wasn't part of the plan. I've got to cheer her up or something. Kevin, Think! Think!
"You're Kevin right?" Her words pulled me from my thoughts, her eyes still fixated on the Aurora lights.
She remembers me, my insides squealing with joy, I wanted to just shout right now but I just displayed a smile. I turned to look at her and my gaze met with hers.
"Yes ma'am" I said, with a smile on my face.
In a split second, I felt her arm wrapped around my torso. I froze on the spot, I definitely wasn't expecting a hug at all. She wasn't budging at all with the hug, she just hugged me even tighter. The more her body was pressed against mine, the hotter my body was getting.
"Where have you been Kevin?" She asked, out of the blues.
"Why didn't you reach out to me?" She asked again, not giving me an opportunity to answer the first question.
I remained quiet, allowing her to let out all of her built up emotions that were bottled inside.
"You've been a security man for my husband for how long? God knows. And yet you didn't reach out why?" She asked, her arms tightening around my torso.
I could feel her tears trickling down her eyes, dampening my shirt but I wasn't really bothered by the shirt, I was more bothered by her tears. I was hesitant about returning the hug, so I just stood like a pole.
"Kevin…" she called out sniffling. I found my arms wrapped around her body. I felt how she stilled under my touch. I removed my hands immediately, I wasn't going to make her feel uncomfortable.
Her next words shocked me.
"Hug me Kevin" she said, her voice lower and sweeter than before.
Without a further thought, I wrapped my arms around her. We remained like that for close to fifteen minutes, until she had cried out all her tears.
"I've missed you Kevin" she said sniffling, her head resting on my chest.
We had not seen each other for about ten years, I thought she had totally forgotten about me. She doesn't know how deeply I've missed her so badly. I applied for the job of a security man for one of the ruthless mafia gods in shadowbrook, because I wanted a chance to at least get to talk to her and now she was right here in my arms.
She broke the hug to look directly at me, still holding my arms.
"Why didn't you say anything?" She asked.
"Cass—" I began, but she cut me off.
"How long have you been working under Anthony?" She asked, her eyes solely on me.
"Just a few months actually. I thought you had forgotten about me, Cass" I said, my voice a little laced with sadness.
"I've thought about you everyday, wondering where you've been," she said, her voice laced with sadness.
I couldn't help the smile that plastered on my face.
"Why are you smiling?" She asked, her brows furrowed.
"I can't help it. Because it feels good knowing that you missed me. I've missed you every single day, there's not a single day that passed that I didn't think about you." I said, still smiling happily.
"So why didn't you reach out then?" She asked, releasing my hands and folded her arms on her chest.
I just couldn't stop smiling, I took her hands in mine.
"I was scared, cass" I blurted out.
"Scared of what? Of Anthony?" She asked.
"I was scared that If I had approached you and you might not recognize me the hurt was something I couldn't bear and besides I'm serving under the wife of the greatest mafia god in Shadowbrook, I did not know what to expect if you did not recognize" I said, looking at her face for any show of emotion that'll help me know what's going on in her head.
"So I waited for you to recognize me. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it" I said, with a smile on my face.
Her eyes widened in surprise by what I had said, I chuckled seeing her eyes widened in surprise. We walked back to the car and rested on the hood of the car.
"So what gave it away?" I asked her.
"The Aurora lights" she replied.
"Oh wow"
"Yeah, i remembered you promised me that we were going to see the Aurora lights together some day" she said, smiling and look at the Aurora lights that danced so beautifully in the sky.
"And in the car, I remembered you helping me through a panic attack when we were little. Although I have a faint memory of that day. I suspected it was you, but wasn't Sure About it" she said, her face beaming with smiles.
"I'm so happy that I got to see you again after all those years" she said, her gaze shifting from the Aurora lights to meet mine.
God, I've missed those eyes staring at me. Her eyes was one of the most beautiful thing I found interest in. But right now there's a question I've been dying to ask and this was my moment.
"Cass, you said you missed your parents—" I said trailing off.
"Hmmm" she hummed thoughtfully.
"Actually, I—" she said cut short by the loud yawn of Candice who had woken up already. We turned to look at her through the windshield.
"Cassandra, where are we?" Candice asked, Cassandra entered the car to meet her friend.
I looked at my watch and my eyes widened in shock, i didn't realize how time had gone. It was twelve a.m already.
I walked to go sit in the driver's seat when my phone started buzzing. I took it out and the name displayed on it made my eyes widened even more. I was going to be in trouble.
