Chapter 6 - Abyss

Akio's pulse quickened as they ventured deeper into the Elysian Fields, each step amplifying the rhythmic thrum of the ground beneath them. The landscape was otherworldly—vibrant hues and shimmering, glass-like trees that seemed to pulse with a life of their own. But the beauty of the place couldn't chase away the unease gnawing at the back of his mind. Kaito, with his jet-black hair and icy blue eyes, walked ahead, his movements smooth and calculated, as if he knew precisely where they were headed. Yuna, her long chestnut hair catching the light as she bounced with excitement, darted glances in every direction, drinking in the surroundings with wide, vivid green eyes.

"Do you feel that?" Yuna asked, her voice a hushed whisper, tinged with awe.

"Yeah," Akio replied, his glowing red eyes narrowing as he focused on the energy swirling around them. "It's like the air itself is alive."

Kaito glanced back, his expression as unreadable as ever. "The Fields amplify the natural energy of this world," he said, his tone as cool as his gaze. "We're here to learn how to manipulate tears in their purest form."

There was something unsettling in Kaito's voice, a coldness that deepened Akio's unease. But before he could dwell on it, Yuna's voice, bright and eager, cut through his thoughts.

"Look over there!" she exclaimed, pointing towards a cluster of trees where the air shimmered with an intensified glow. As they approached, they saw it—a tear, suspended mid-air, radiating a deep, pulsating light. This one was larger than any they had seen before, its edges crackling with raw energy.

Akio's breath hitched. The power emanating from the tear was palpable, a raw force waiting to be tapped into. But with that power came a familiar sense of danger—a reminder of the last time he had encountered a tear like this.

"Should we study this one?" Yuna asked, her excitement tempered with a hint of apprehension.

"Yes," Kaito said, his gaze fixed on the tear, the intensity in his icy eyes unyielding. "This one is perfect."

Akio hesitated, his instincts screaming caution. But Yuna was already pulling out her notebook, eager to jot down her observations. Kaito stepped closer to the tear, his hand outstretched as if he intended to touch it.

"Wait!" Akio grabbed Kaito's arm, his grip firm. "Ms. Odessa said not to touch it directly."

Kaito's gaze met Akio's, a strange intensity in his eyes. "I know what I'm doing," he said, his voice low and resolute. "We need to understand its properties firsthand."

For a moment, the two boys stood in tense silence, their gazes locked in an unspoken challenge. Then, with a slight nod, Kaito stepped back, though not before casting one last lingering glance at the tear.

Yuna, oblivious to the tension, began scribbling furiously in her notebook. "It's beautiful," she murmured, her eyes reflecting the tear's glow. "But it feels… unstable."

"That's because it is," Akio replied, keeping his distance from the tear. "This isn't like the ones we've practiced with. The energy here is more concentrated, more volatile."

Kaito crossed his arms, his gaze never wavering from the tear. "We need to test it," he said, his tone leaving no room for debate. "We won't learn anything by just staring at it."

Before Akio could protest, Kaito raised his hand, his fingers curling into a fist as he focused his energy. The air around him shimmered, warping as he prepared to manipulate the tear.

"Kaito, stop!" Akio shouted, but it was too late.

With a sharp motion, Kaito unleashed his energy toward the tear. For a fleeting moment, it seemed to stabilize, the crackling edges smoothing out. But then, with a deafening roar, the tear exploded outward, sending shockwaves through the air. The ground trembled violently, and Akio barely had time to brace himself before he was thrown back, his vision blurring as he hit the ground hard.

"Akio!" Yuna's voice pierced through the chaos, and he forced himself to his feet, his ears ringing from the explosion. He spotted Yuna a few feet away, clutching her notebook to her chest, her face pale with shock.

But Kaito… Kaito stood exactly where he had been, utterly unfazed by the blast. The tear had closed, but the energy it released hung thick in the air, suffocating and oppressive.

"What… what were you thinking?" Akio demanded, his voice raw with anger.

Kaito turned to face him, his expression as cold and unreadable as ever. "We learned something, didn't we?" he replied calmly. "The tear was unstable, but now we know how to handle it."

Akio's fists clenched, fury simmering within him. "You could have killed us!"

Kaito shrugged, indifferent. "You're still alive, aren't you? And now we have valuable information for our report."

Yuna stepped forward, her hand gently resting on Akio's arm. "Let's just go back," she said softly, her earlier excitement replaced with a cautious wariness. "We've done enough here."

Akio nodded, though the anger still burned beneath his calm exterior. He didn't trust Kaito, not one bit. But now wasn't the time to argue. They needed to get back to Ms. Odessa, to the safety of the group.

The journey back through the Elysian Fields felt longer than before, the air heavy with tension. Akio found himself glancing at Kaito every few steps, his mind racing with questions. What was Kaito really after? Why did he seem so indifferent to the danger they had just faced?

Yuna, too, was quieter now, her earlier enthusiasm giving way to a sense of unease. She stayed close to Akio, her eyes darting around, wary of their surroundings.

As they neared the clearing where they were supposed to meet Ms. Odessa, Akio's senses sharpened. The familiar hum of energy in the air had shifted, becoming darker, more oppressive. He could feel it deep in his bones, a low, resonant thrum that made his skin crawl.

"We're almost there," Kaito said, breaking the silence. But there was something unsettling in his voice, something that sent a chill down Akio's spine.

They stepped into the clearing, and Akio's heart sank. Ms. Odessa was there, but Kaito… Kaito was nowhere to be seen.

"Ms. Odessa!" Yuna called out, relief evident in her voice. But as they drew closer, that relief quickly turned to confusion.

Ms. Odessa stood rigid, her back to them, her usually vibrant aura now a flickering shadow of its former self. Akio could barely make out her features in the dimming light. Something was terribly wrong.

"Where's Kaito?" Akio asked urgently, but Ms. Odessa didn't respond. She remained eerily still, as if she hadn't heard him at all.

Yuna took a cautious step forward. "Ms. Odessa…?"

Before she could get any closer, a low growl rumbled through the clearing. Akio's eyes widened as shadows began to move at the edges of his vision. From the darkness of the trees, monstrous shapes emerged—creatures unlike anything they had encountered before. Their eyes glowed with a sickly green light, their forms twisted and shifting, as if made of smoke and shadow.

Akio's heart pounded in his chest. "Yuna, get back!"

But it was too late. The creatures circled them, their growls growing louder, more menacing. Akio instinctively reached for his energy, trying to focus on a tear, but the oppressive atmosphere made it nearly impossible to concentrate.

Ms. Odessa finally turned to face them, and Akio's blood ran cold. Her eyes were empty, devoid of their usual warmth and wisdom, replaced by an unnatural void. She opened her mouth to speak, but the words that came out were not her own.

"Welcome to the end of your journey," she intoned, her voice hollow and distorted. "Your friend has already made his choice."

Akio felt a wave of dread crash over him. "What did you do to Kaito?" he demanded, but Ms. Odessa's twisted smile was the only answer he received.

The creatures began to close in, their forms solidifying into monstrous beings of shadow and teeth. Yuna's grip tightened on her notebook, her eyes wide with fear, but Akio knew they couldn't stay here—if they did, they would be torn apart.

"Run!" Akio shouted, grabbing Yuna's arm and pulling her back toward the path they had come from. But the creatures blocked their way, and the suffocating energy of the Elysian Fields sapped their strength.

As the monsters lunged, Akio barely managed to raise a barrier of energy, but it was weak, faltering under the pressure. He could hear Yuna crying out, the sound echoing in his ears, but he felt powerless to help her.

And then, just as the shadows were about to overwhelm them, a blinding light exploded from behind, momentarily driving the creatures back. Akio turned to see Ms. Odessa, her body glowing with a fierce, unnatural energy, her eyes blazing with a light that wasn't her own.

But it was too late. The creatures surged forward again, more vicious than before, and Akio knew they wouldn't be able to hold them off much longer.

As the world around them descended into chaos, one thought blazed in Akio's mind "I can't let Yuna die again!"

And just as he thought all hope was lost, the ground beneath them began to crack, a new tear forming in the earth. But this one wasn't like the others. It was vast, an abyss that seemed to lead to another realm entirely.

Akio and Yuna barely had time to react before the tear pulled them in, the world around them dissolving into darkness. The last thing Akio saw before the void consumed him was Ms. Odessa's twisted smile, the monsters swarming over her like shadows devouring the light.

Then, everything went black.
