Chereads / Masks and Deceit / Chapter 2 - Room A

Chapter 2 - Room A

With Evan back on the line and Sir Martius in a seemingly happy mood, the rest of them slumped their shoulders a little in relaxation without the fear of pissing off the great knight holding them captive.

"John here will lead you all to the dormitory. Take a good rest today as it will probably be your last day to rest but don't go overboard." Martius gestured toward the scrawny-looking man who was standing in the corner throughout the examination.

"This way." John walked out of the court with the assurance that they would all follow him, which they did.

Although he was smaller in frame than all of them, Davina included, they all couldn't help but maintain a straight posture around John despite being out of his eye view.

Something about his aura commanded control, respect, and power. He seemed like an old wise mage with years of experience dangling on his belt. The thin greying hair on his head, long beard, and wrinkled skin added more to his magely appearance.

"You will all be staying in two rooms of twelve." John pointed to the doors in front of them. "The first six and last six on the line, form a line outside door A, the rest of you, follow the same order into room B"

A second didn't pass before they all began scrambling to the rooms assigned to them. Although his words barely had any explanation of what exactly to do, they all read between the lines.

"Good," John stated once all the men had followed his orders. "I'll be in charge of you all for the time being to keep you in check so make sure you follow all the rules. Martius isn't the only one who can send you away." His words were a clear threat and none of them dared to take it lightly.

"Your uniforms are on the bed, be up by five in the morning tomorrow, have breakfast at six and hed straight to the training court."

After John finished speaking, he simply turned around and left without uttering another word. They all watched him in disbelief, most of them expecting a better explanation on their new routines but John did no such thing.

"He's quite bossy for someone his age."

Davina turned to see, Ryan, one of the few men who stood out to her during the examination. At the time she made a mental note to steer clear of him, but now, much to her distate, she would be sharing the same room as Ryan.

Another interesting character she would be boarding with was Evan. After the display he had earlier with Martius, Davina was interested in getting closer to him. He seemed like a useful ally.

"Alright, get inside everyone, we need to sort out bed arrangements." Ryan clapped his hands like a leader would.

Although he didn't outright say it, Davina could tell Ryan was taking positions as their room leader and she didn't like the sound of that, neither did the other four.

"I hope you're not doing what I think you are." One of the other men spoke up, challenging Ryan.

"If you mean taking charge as the leader, then yes, I'm doing exactly what you think I am." Ryan smirked, feeling no shame in slightest for the way he was acting.

"And what gives you the right to think you're best suited to be our leader?" Davina found herself asking. She hated men who think they deserved something simply based on power heirachy.

"Isn't it obvious, I'm the most fit for this compared to you all, most especially you, Dimitria." He chuckled mockingly.

"The name's Dimitri."

"You look like a girl so I might as well call you Dimitria."

Davina felt like smashing his face into the wall and carving out that smug look he had on. She probably wold have if it wasn't for the fact that he would be the one flinging her across the room.

"You're all muscles and no brains, clearly not fit to be leader of anything much less people." Davina countered back with words rather than fists.

Slowly, the other men began voicing out their disapproval of Ryan becoming their leader and soon enough he was outnumbered. Much to no ones surprise, he was disliked by everyone present.

Amidst the chaos, one voice stood out. Abel, walked to the centre of the group and pointed at Evan. "I think we all agree he's best suited to be the leader."

"Me?" Evan confusedly asked.

"Yes, you. If anything, Sir Martius's words earlier is a confirmation that you should be the the leader."

"You want mommy's boy here to be the leader?" Ryan lashed out Abel, feeling annoyed that no one was giving him the attention he craved.

"Sure is better than having an egotistical bastard like you do it."

The other men didn't need time to think it through, they already made their choice the moment Abel had pointed at Evan.

"We agree." They all replied, Davina included.

Outnumbered, Ryan had no choice but to yield and watch in anger as everyone praised Evan and ignored him as if his presence was nonexistant.
