Chapter 6 - Chapter VI

Adelaide sat by her window, the soft morning light streaming in as she unfolded the letter delivered by the Duke's footman. Her heart raced slightly as she read his words, written in a neat, controlled hand.

**Letter from the Duke of Ashbourne**

Miss Sinclair,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits. I would like to request the pleasure of your company for a walk in the garden this afternoon. It would be an opportunity for us to discuss matters of mutual interest and our differences, which I believe we can navigate with understanding and respect.

Yours faithfully,

The Duke of Ashbourne

---

The afternoon sun cast a warm glow over the garden as Adelaide walked along the path, her steps light yet purposeful. She spotted the Duke standing by a rosebush, his posture erect and his expression as stoic as ever.

As she approached, he turned and offered a curt nod. "Miss Sinclair, thank you for joining me."

Adelaide's smile was tight, her demeanor distant. "Thank you for inviting me, Your Grace."

They walked in silence for a few moments before Adelaide spoke, her voice carrying a hint of coolness. "You mentioned in your letter that you wished to discuss our differences."

The Duke's expression remained inscrutable. "Indeed. I believe it is important for us to understand each other, given the circumstances of our... arrangement."

Adelaide nodded, her eyes searching his face but remaining guarded. "I agree. It seems we come from very different worlds."

He met her gaze, his eyes revealing nothing. "I have been shaped by my experiences, Miss Sinclair. They have made me who I am today. It is not an easy thing to change."

Adelaide's voice was measured. "I do not wish to change you, Your Grace. I only wish to understand you better."

The Duke's facade remained intact, his tone even. "And I you, Miss Sinclair. Our differences need not be a barrier. They can be a source of strength if we allow them to be."

Adelaide's smile was brief and distant. "I believe you are right. We can learn from each other."

He paused by a bench, gesturing for her to sit. As she did, he remained standing, his hands clasped behind his back. "There are things about my past that I am not proud of, and they have left their mark. I do not wish to burden you with them."

Adelaide looked up at him, her eyes holding a mixture of empathy and hurt. "We all have our burdens, Your Grace. But sharing them can make them lighter."

He looked away, his expression unchanged. "Perhaps. But some burdens are best carried alone."

Adelaide stood, her voice firmer now. "You do not have to carry them alone. Not anymore."

The Duke's eyes met hers briefly before he looked away again. "Thank you, Miss Sinclair. Your words are... appreciated."

Adelaide took a deep breath, deciding to address the issue that had been weighing on her mind. "Your Grace, about the ball... Your actions left me confused and hurt."

He stiffened, his expression becoming even more distant. "I regret that, Miss Sinclair. My behavior was inexcusable."

She looked down, her voice soft but steady. "Why did you kiss me and then walk away?"

The Duke's voice was cold and detached. "It was a moment of weakness. I feared that showing too much affection would... complicate things."

Adelaide's eyes met his, filled with a mix of sadness and understanding. "Complications are a part of life, Your Grace. But pushing people away only creates more distance."

He nodded slowly, the weight of her words barely acknowledged. "You are right. I must learn to balance my past with the present."

Adelaide's smile returned, this time with a hint of warmth. "We can help each other with that balance."

The Duke's expression remained stoic, and his voice was flat. "I look forward to our next conversation, Miss Sinclair."

She nodded, feeling a small victory in his words. "As do I, Your Grace. As do I.

Adelaide returned to her room, her steps echoing softly on the polished floor. She closed the door behind her and leaned against it, letting out a slow breath. The conversation in the garden replayed in her mind, the Duke's distant demeanor and the underlying tension leaving her unsettled.

She walked to the window and looked out at the garden where they had just walked. The Duke's stoic facade had been unyielding, and though he had spoken with an air of calm detachment, Adelaide sensed an underlying struggle he wasn't revealing.

Sitting at her vanity, she looked at her reflection, deep in thought. The Duke's demeanor had been impenetrable, and his reasons for pushing people away seemed rooted in something deeper than mere pride. The kiss and abrupt departure at the ball haunted her thoughts. She needed to understand what lay beneath his facade, and she was determined to break through it.

Adelaide picked up a small journal from her dresser and began writing her thoughts, her pen moving quickly across the page.

---

**Journal Entry**

The Duke's demeanor today was as impenetrable as ever. Despite his attempts to maintain distance, I can't help but feel there is more to his behavior than he lets on. His past clearly affects him deeply, but what exactly burdens him so?

His detached manner during our conversation was as cold as the winter air, yet his eyes betrayed brief moments of something akin to regret. There must be a way to reach him, to understand the shadows of his past that drive him to act this way.

I wonder what happened at the ball that pushed him to such a state. His abrupt departure after kissing me seemed to be a reaction to something much more personal. Could it be that he fears forming attachments due to past betrayals or disappointments?

I must find a way to connect with him beyond his stoic facade. If I am to make this arrangement work, I need to uncover the truths he is hiding and find a way to help him face them.

Adelaide closed the journal, her resolve hardening. She knew that breaking through the Duke's facade would not be easy, but she was determined to understand him better. Her mission was clear: she needed to find a way to reach the heart behind the cold exterior, to uncover the pain he was hiding, and to offer him a chance at healing and genuine connection.

As she gazed out the window at the garden where they had walked, she felt a renewed sense of purpose. She would find a way to help him confront his past, even if it meant challenging the very walls he had built around himself.
