Chapter 30 - Chapter 17: Magical Creatures Class

A few days later, the students of Starshade Academy made their way to the Magical Creatures Sanctuary, located near the enchanting Starlit Garden. The sanctuary was a lush, sprawling area filled with a variety of habitats to house the diverse magical creatures studied at the academy.

Professor Nox Greenleaf, a gentle and knowledgeable caretaker of magical beasts, greeted the students with a warm smile. He was an elven man with long, flowing green hair and kind, twinkling eyes that seemed to understand the very essence of the creatures he cared for.

"Exquisite everyone," he began, his voice soothing and melodic. "My name is Nox Greenleaf, and I will be your teacher in Magical Creatures. Today, we are going to learn about Frost Drakes, brought from the colder regions of Eldoria."

He led the students to a large, icy enclosure where several small, dragon-like creatures with icy blue scales were playing. The Frost Drakes exuded an aura of cold, their breaths creating small clouds of frost in the air.

"Frost Drakes," Nox continued, "are small dragon-like creatures with icy blue scales. They have the ability to breathe ice, resist extreme cold, and freeze objects with a touch. They are often used in ice-related spells due to these unique abilities."

As Professor Greenleaf provided this information, the students eagerly listened and began asking questions.

Kieran raised his hand first. "Professor, can Frost Drakes be tamed, or are they always wild?"

Nox smiled. "Frost Drakes can indeed be tamed, but it requires patience and a gentle approach. They are intelligent and can form strong bonds with those who treat them with respect and kindness."

Aric was in awe, his eyes wide with fascination. "They're amazing," he whispered to Aurora, who stood beside him.

Aurora, her eyes sparkling with curiosity, asked, "What do they eat? Do they have any specific dietary needs?"

"They primarily feed on small mammals and fish found in their natural icy habitats," Nox explained. "However, in captivity, we provide them with a diet of frozen fish and specially prepared nutrient blocks to ensure they receive all necessary nutrients."

Aric, intrigued by their magical abilities, inquired, "How do they use their ice breath? Is it purely instinctual, or can it be controlled?"

"Excellent question, Aric," Nox said. "Their ice breath is both instinctual and controlled. In the wild, they use it to hunt and defend themselves. However, when tamed, they can be trained to use it on command, making them valuable allies in various magical tasks."

Another student, Cedric, asked, "Can they be tamed or used as familiars?"

Professor Greenleaf smiled. "While Frost Drakes can form bonds with humans, they are quite independent and not typically used as familiars. They do, however, respond well to those who show them respect and understanding."

Liora, who had been quietly observing, asked, "Are there any known threats to Frost Drakes in their natural habitat?"

"Indeed," Nox replied. "In the colder regions of Eldoria, Frost Drakes face threats from larger predators and harsh environmental conditions. However, their ability to blend into their icy surroundings and their natural defensive capabilities often keep them safe."

As the students absorbed this wealth of information, Professor Greenleaf motioned for them to gather closer to the enclosure. "Would anyone like to try interacting with a Frost Drake? It can be a unique and rewarding experience."

Kieran, always eager to be in the spotlight, stepped forward. "I'd love to, Professor."

Nox gently opened the enclosure, allowing a small Frost Drake to approach Kieran. The creature's icy blue eyes studied him curiously.

"Remember, Kieran, move slowly and speak softly," Nox advised. "Let the Frost Drake come to you."

Kieran extended his hand cautiously, and to everyone's delight, the Frost Drake nuzzled it, its breath creating a small puff of frost in the air.

"Wow," Kieran said, his voice filled with awe. "This is incredible."

Aurora giggled. "Looks like even Frost Drakes can tolerate your presence, Kieran."

Kieran smirked. "Guess I have a knack for making friends, even the icy ones."

Kieran, always eager to impress, asked, "Can they actually freeze a person solid with their breath?"

The professor chuckled. "In theory, yes, but they would need to be quite agitated or threatened to do so. Frost Drakes are generally peaceful creatures unless provoked."

As the students took turns interacting with the Frost Drakes, Professor Greenleaf looked on proudly. "These creatures remind us of the beauty and wonder of the natural world. By understanding and respecting them, we learn more about ourselves and our connection to magic."

Walking back from the class, Aric couldn't stop talking about the Frost Drakes. "Did you see how their scales shimmered? And their ice breath! This class is incredible."

Aurora laughed. "You really enjoyed it, didn't you?"

"I did," Aric replied, his enthusiasm contagious. "I can't wait to learn more."

Kieran, with a smirk, added, "Just don't get too close, Aric. You might end up frozen solid."

Aric grinned. "I think I'll take my chances. This is way too fascinating to miss out on."
