Sensing her mother's horror, Ruby clung tighter to her, her face pressed on her mother's butt. Her little heart drummed against her chest, for reasons she couldn't understand.
Valerie's eyes locked onto Benjamin, a mix of emotions warring within. "You should be dead." Her words spilled out without thinking.
"Right?" Benjamin laughed, the sound echoing through the alleyway. "I should be dead, but I'm not." His smile grew wider, but didn't reach his eyes. "Do you think I'm that easy to kill?"
Benjamin's confidence sent a chill down Valerie's spine. His eyes sparkled with amusement, as if he'd been expecting her outburst.
Benjamin took a step closer, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper. "Your family underestimated me, dear Niece. I've planned for every contingency, every incident that happened in the Wright family, right from when you were just five years old."
