Chapter 56 - Chapter 56 – God Amongst Elves

"...he doesn't want any innocent elves to die." (Alto)

I feel my entire body tense, and a squeal of surprise escapes my throat as I look at Alto in bewilderment.

"Alto, what are y-" (Mizuki)

Before I can finish my question, I'm interrupted by a familiar, sweet voice.

"Alto, what do you mean? Why would innocent elves die?" (Ilina)

I snap my gaze to Ilina in confusion, but she's looking at me neutrally. Calmly. Her eyes are meeting mine, as if trying to communicate that I should be silent. Is this still part of her plan? Is that what she's trying to tell me?

Seeing the intense exchange, and being obviously thrown by the talk of dead elves, the others in the room look between Alto and me suspiciously. Alto just nods at Ilina, acknowledging her question.

"I mean that the noble houses in question would inevitably abuse the trains they were gifted, resulting in the spilling of elven blood. In essence, Mizuki is trying to protect the common elves from any nobles' arrogance and entitlement." (Alto)

My whole body floods with relief. I can tell from her phrasing that, once again, Alto's perfectly riding the line between truth and misdirection. Still, while she didn't explicitly mention Azazel or his rules, she didn't exactly provide a detailed justification of her statement either.

I see several of the nobles grow visibly angry, but a couple just look confused. Elira, for her part, is starting to look nervous. If I had to guess, that's at least partly because she knows that Alto wouldn't bluff about danger to elves like this. Jorah and Tessa, the angry ones, share different thoughts, though.

"Preposterous! You're implying that a human needs to protect elves from me!? I...that's...how dare you..." (Jorah)

"My, how ironic of you to call us arrogant, while thinking you have the right to speak to us in such a way. I'm quite sure I'd do nothing quite so negligent as you describe." (Tessa)

Alto gives them both a piercing look.

"Is that so? What if you were given the trains under the clear condition that you could never use them other than how they were intended? No studying the train, no trying to replicate it...nothing but using a gift you were given, exactly as instructed. In addition, what if Mizuki told you that this was because such unintended tampering could kill dozens, maybe hundreds of elves? Would you heed his warning? Remember, Lady Nedonera can cast a spell to tell if you're lying." (Alto)

Tessa's expression is briefly one of surprise, then she narrows her eyes angrily, but stays silent. However, I also see...frustration...in her expression. In other words, she knows full well she'd ignore such a warning. Jorah has a similar reaction, but seems to be fuming more obviously.

Elira looks at me in concern following Alto's assertions.

"Mizuki, is this true?" (Elira)

I hesitate briefly, as all of the nobles in the room turn their mostly skeptical gazes towards me. I also notice Alto staring at me, and when she catches my gaze, she gives a subtle, encouraging nod. So...she's leaving it in my hands to give everyone a detailed explanation of her statement, huh? Terrific.

Still, what Alto said is technically true. Not just because breaking Azazel's rules could cause me to kill elves. But also, the control plates themselves are dangerous to tamper with. Activate the forcefield plate outside of its slot on the train, and you could very well shear apart anything or anyone in its area of effect.

The same goes for the acceleration plates – you and others may get flung into a wall at breakneck speed without shielding. Even activating the acceleration plates in their slots without the forcefield active could damage the railcars or railway. In essence, any tinkering – the very basis of them studying it – would be dangerous.

I guess, if I'm going to give them an explanation, such a half-truth would be best. Eventually, I nod to Elira solemnly.

"What Alto says is true, but I saw no point in giving such a warning. Lord Jorah and Lady Tessa don't trust that I have the elves' best interests in mind, or believe that the elves could be out of their depth where magic is involved. So, they'd just meddle with the trains as they saw fit. Lady Helena would do the same out of pure, unbridled curiosity about an Elder Dragon's special item. The trains are perfectly safe, when used as intended, but..." (Mizuki)

I give Elira a serious look. No sense in holding back now.

"Such abuse would, at least, accidentally kill the handful of elves instructed to study them. At worst, the trains' normal function could be compromised in a way that caused the train to crash while in operation, potentially killing hundreds of innocent elves who had no part in such meddling. I won't be complicit in something like that. Besides, even if we told you how the trains work, you're incapable of replicating it. That part is true, too." (Mizuki)

Elira looks away thoughtfully, and Tessa is staring at me intently. Jorah is looking angrier by the second, and I'm expecting another outburst, but raucous laughter snaps everyone's attention to the corner of the room. Apparently, Helena Izthil finds something funny.

"Hahahahahah! Ohhhhh....Mizuki, you've got the number of everyone here, don't you? Fufufu...oh yeah, I can see it now. Jorah might do as you predicted out of pure distrust that anything you say could be true. Tessa, of course, doesn't believe for a second that a human might understand something better than elves. Even me...I'd probably be more cautious, only tinker with the damn thing myself, but.....yeah, I might get myself killed. Hahahahahah!" (Helena)

I just stare at her in bewilderment. Honestly, the more I'm around Helena, the more I think that she's kind of unhinged. Still, she's one of my favorite nobles. Comedic value aside, she can look at herself and others objectively and own up to it. I respect that. However, Jorah does not share my amusement.

"And why shouldn't I, Helena!? It is only natural to distrust him!" (Jorah)

While Helena and Jorah bicker, I see Darak turn towards me in confusion. He clears his throat, and the others in the room quiet down and direct their attention towards him.

"Ehem...Mizuki, I can't help but notice that you left me out of your examples. May I ask why you don't think that I could be trusted to handle a train responsibly?" (Darak)

I sigh internally. I'm sure he's not going to take this well, and he won't be the only one. I nod sympathetically to Darak. But before I can respond, a soft voice rings out from behind him.

"It's because of Vena...right?" (...)

Everyone turns to the source of the voice – a 20-looking black-haired woman with piercing blue eyes. She's locking eyes with me, and there is a sympathetic expression on her face. It's Darak's other daughter, the one I rescued from the slave trade. Vena, who is standing next to her, frowns disapprovingly.

"Tch...you're not supposed to talk here, Linnea." (Vena)

Realization dawns on Darak's face.

"Quiet, Vena. I appreciate Linnea pointing out what I should have realized myself. I'm glad that someone in the Zardo house made it clear that we're aware of the problem. So, Mizuki, I take it that my daughter is correct?" (Darak)

Darak looks at me with an exasperated expression, as though he already knows what I'll say, and is irritated with his daughter over it.

"Yes. I meant what I said before, Lord Darak. I don't hold your daughter's actions against you personally. However, the trains are not only a matter of trusting you, but also your entire house's power structure. Lady Vena has already demonstrated that she's impulsive and distrusting of me, and more than capable of circumventing you. In addition, she is your heir, and would one day inherit full control over any train we provided to you." (Mizuki)

Darak nods glumly, and I see Vena clench her jaw at my assessment of her. That's not my concern, though. I turn to Linnea and smile, then give a light bow, and she gives me a polite nod in return.

"Also, I'm sorry that we never got to speak before, Lady Linnea. I'm glad to see that you're doing well." (Mizuki)

Linnea smiles admonishingly.

"I think that was no fault of yours. We were distrustful of you given the situation, and you were clearly just trying to give us the space we needed to feel at ease. Also, just call me Linnea, please. Lady Alto, it's good to see you again as well. I trust that you've been happy with your life since we parted ways?" (Linnea)

Linnea turns her gaze to Alto at the end, who gives a small smile and nods.

"Immensely, Lady Linnea." (Alto)

Linnea smiles genuinely in return.

"I'm glad to hear that. After this, you all should visit so that we can catch up. I know that I wasn't your friend before or even during the outreach trip....and I heard you lost those that were. I'm sorry that I.....the attack...uhm. I hope you know that...you looked after all of us until Princess Ilina arrived, and...I appreciate it. We all did." (Linnea)

Linnea loses steam halfway through her statement, and I see both shame and gratitude mixed into her expression. It's obvious that she feels guilty about something that happened on their outreach trip, but I don't know what that is. Regardless, it's probably something that Alto wouldn't want her torturing herself over.

The touching moment is interrupted by the sound of Tessa clearing her throat.

"Ehem...I'm sure what you ladies went through was truly unfortunate, and I hope you have time to talk about it later, but this is not the place for such a discussion. We need to get this meeting back on track. However...I would like to hear about these 'actions' of Vena's that Mizuki mentioned. What happened?" (Tessa)

Tessa directs a suspicious gaze towards me, but Helena piles on before I can respond.

"It should be obvious that Vena did something foolish, and got taught a lesson by Mizuki. Can't you see her face right now? So, forget that. What I want to know, Mizuki, is why you're worried about her succession so far into the future? It may be twenty of your lifetimes before then. Hell, even my grandchildren may be dead by then. There's little reason in worrying about something like that...it makes no sense for you." (Helena)

I see a few more of the people in the room eye me curiously, expectantly. I sigh internally. It's just one random question after another with these people. That said, Helena's question about why I'm so invested in the long-term is fair. Obviously, it's because I won't die of old age, and I have no intention of letting any heirs abuse the trains later on either. Still, Ilina made it clear last night that now is too soon for me to answer questions like that honestly.

It's probably best to redirect things for now, and I know just the way to do it. It may be a bit heavy-handed, but we've already decided that I won't be playing the timid servant anymore. No need to be so subtle.

I shake my head at them all.

"Actually, I think your questions are best tabled for another time. In fact, even this discussion of the trains should be concluded. We won't be building trains for any of the other nobles...period. You know our reasons, and they're not going to change, so let's move on. We have far more important things to discuss today...that's all pretty trivial by comparison." (Mizuki)

That's true, quite frankly. Not just because of the truth about myself or my relationship with Ilina will be revealed, but because we still haven't told the nobles about the Empire. Though I won't let anything happen to them, they face the very real threat of invasion.

Nonetheless, everyone's eyes go wide in surprise at my blunt response, and Tessa gives a disapproving look.

"My, you're growing rather bold with y-" (Tessa)

Surprisingly, Elira doesn't let her finish.

"No, Tessa. I've let this discussion about trains go on far too long. You've heard the decision of Lady Nedonera's party. As for the study of the existing trains you requested, I expressly forbid it. Perhaps some of you don't believe Mizuki's warnings, but I do. I'm not putting elven lives on the line for something with little apparent hope of success. Especially not against the wishes of those who gifted our people the trains in the first place. Besides, Mizuki is correct...this meeting was called to discuss something far more urgent than the trains." (Elira)

All eyes snap to Elira in surprise, and her face grows deathly serious. She's also clearly nervous. Since she doesn't know about the other revelations we have planned, I can only assume that she's troubled by the situation with the Empire. I guess I was right to consider it pretty consequential to the nobles.

Tessa and Jorah start to protest Elira's dismissal of the train issue, and it looks like Elira is about to reprimand them, but Helena beats her to it. She's lacking her usual air of calm wit, and her expression is grim.

"Shut up you two, and take a good look at our Queen's face. It should be clear that whatever she's about to tell us is serious. I don't have a very good feeling about this, so quit complaining like children. My Queen, please continue." (Helena)

Jorah and Tessa cut Helena angry looks, but she just ignores them, and Elira nods to Helena gratefully. I glance to Cara and Alara, and they are giving me nervous looks as well. They seem to know what's looming. I glance to Ilina, and she gives me a small, supportive smile.

"Helena's intuition is correct. I have every reason to believe that Emperor Belmod of the Ralzen Empire was planning to stage an invasion of our country. That threat has subsided for the immediate future, but that's unlikely to remain the case indefinitely." (Elira)

For a brief moment, the room is dead silent as the faces around the table grow pale. Then, questions start frantically pouring in.

"So, those cretins are finally coming for us...how long do we have? I have to warn my soldiers at the eastern border immediately!" (Tessa)

"You're certain of this, my Queen? What information do we have, specifically? Can we be sure the source is credible?" (Helena)

"The Empire!? This is grave, My Queen! I hear they have more than half a million soldiers in their army alone! That's over double the population of our country!" (Jorah)

CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!

The room falls silent, and everyone turns towards the sound of someone clapping – Darak is sitting forward, with a calm but serious expression. Once he sees he has everyone's attention, he nods.

"Now, let's not descend into chaos. We always knew that this was a possibility. Your questions are all important, but panic will do us no good – we should wait for our Queen to explain further. Did you all notice she said that Belmod was planning an invasion, but it seems something has delayed it? We should understand the developments in the human country first. Our people have no experience with war, but I'm sure that knowing your enemy is key." (Darak)

The effect of Darak's words is immediate – the nobles remain somber, but the room is noticeably calmer. Tessa and Jorah do not look angry about Darak chiding them, and Helena has no sarcastic retort. Honestly, I'm impressed.

"Yes...Darak's right. I'm unsettled, and it's affecting my judgement. Most of our external information comes from coastal surveillance by ship, and whatever the demi-humans that neighbor the human countries report to our visiting outreach groups. We only know that Belmod is more brazen than his predecessors, and less tolerant of non-humans. So, Queen Elira, can you explain these new developments in the Empire?" (Helena)

Following Helena's statement, there's a round of apologetic assent from other nobles, including Jorah and Tessa. For once, they all seem to be on the same page. I, for one, try to keep my mouth from gaping at the sudden change in the nobles' demeanors.

I guess, credit where credit is due...when their people are in danger, they seem to put all their differences aside and work together. That's more than I can say for most humans, here or on Earth.

In contrast to me, Elira just nods and continues her explanation.

"The day before I summoned you all here...I learned that Emperor Belmod summoned a human adventurer's party to appear before him in their capital city. During the party's audience with Belmod, the emperor apparently demanded that they spy on the Elven Kingdom and collect information that would be useful for invasion. The adventuring party in question, well...." (Elira)

Elira nods at me apprehensively. It's clear she wants me to take over. I step forward as several of the nobles look my way in confusion. As realization begins to dawn on their faces, I nod firmly.

"It was my adventuring party that Belmod summoned. Belmod heard about our S-rank endorsement by Queen Elira, and wanted us to use our access to your country to act as spies. It was obvious that he had aspirations to invade." (Mizuki)

The room falls eerily quiet, before it's filled with more frantic questions.

"A spy!? You all heard that, right!? He just admitted it!" (Jorah)

"My Queen, if Mizuki has admitted to his own emperor demanding that he spy on us, we should at least keep him in a cell while he is questioned! It is far too dangerous to have him in a room with you! Please, I insist!" (Tessa)

"Would you idiots be quiet and let the damn boy talk! And have you lost your sense, Tessa!? Talking about throwing Lady Nedonera's subordinate in a cell in front of her!" (Helena)

Tessa and Helena start bickering, but I have no intention of letting this spiral out of control. I'll take a page out of Darak's playbook...the time for subtlety is over. I raise my hands together in front of me.

CLAP! CLAP!

All the nobles look at me in utter confusion....they're obviously not used to such outwardly admonishing behavior from me. Best to capitalize on that.

"Thank you for your attention. Now...Lady Tessa, Lord Jorah...I can understand your reaction to that information, but I'll have to ask you to refrain from jumping to conclusions until I've finished telling you what you need to know. For starters, I am not a spy for the Empire, nor have I ever been Belmod's subject. I am here to help your people." (Mizuki)

Tessa narrows her eyes at me, but the others are still looking at me in shock. Darak seems confused about something, and opens his mouth to speak.

"Wait, Mizuki, if this ha-" (Darak)

However, Tessa cuts him off with a venomous reply to me. Her eyes look almost frantic, and it's easily the least composed I've ever seen her.

"I don't know where you get off clapping at us like children, and I don't care which of those human countries you consider home...you're still one of them. How do we know that you're not spying on us now, using this information as a ploy to gain our trust? After all, our limited information on Belmod does not suggest that he would just let someone leave after refusing his demands. There's no reason for us to believe you aren't working with the Empire!" (Tessa)

"Tessa, start thinking rationally. Lady Nedonera wiped out the Empire's army several centuries ago...her distaste for them is well known, and I'm sure they feel the same way. Even if you don't trust Mizuki, why would Lady Nedonera's subordinate be working to aid people that she despises?" (Helena)

Uhm, yeah....those were my thoughts as well. Tessa seems to catch on, at least somewhat, and she starts to wear a conflicted expression.

"I...that's.....we can't be sure...." (Tessa)

I think this is a good time to just come out with it.

"Lady Tessa, if Lady Helena's point is not enough to convince you that I'm not working for Belmod....you may wish to know that Belmod is dead. That is the reason for any invasion being delayed." (Mizuki)

Darak, Helena, Jorah, and Tessa all widen their eyes in surprise as they turn to stare at me, and I can see similar reactions from some of their escorts. Zakariah and Vena are looking at me in surprise. But I see that Linnea has gone pale...I guess she's already putting together what probably happened.

"D-Dead....?" (Tessa)

I turn back to see Tessa staring at me blankly, obviously confused by the unexpected information. I also notice Darak staring at me intently, and his eyes narrow when he catches my gaze.

"Mizuki, what do you mean that Belmod is dead? How did he die?" (Darak)

I see Elira, Cara, and Alara watching me nervously. Alyse, however, is looking toward me with grim anticipation. I guess she's also put together what happened. Oh well, time to rip the bandage off. I nod to Darak firmly.

"He's dead because my adventuring party killed him. Him, and all 68 of his elite guard that were present in the throne room. It was an unfortunate amount of bloodshed, but he threatened my party members. I wasn't going to let that slide." (Mizuki)

I maintain a firm, neutral expression as I reveal the information to those in the room, and I notice Alyse staring at me, terrified. Meanwhile, Elira and Dargo look a bit confused, probably wondering why I'd give out such specific information. Information that clearly raises questions about my party and my abilities. The reason is, I want everyone to start asking the right questions – the ones that lead to me telling them the truth, organically. Helena is quick on the uptake.

"Mizuki...that's a troubling amount of carnage, especially if those guards were as skilled as I suspect. Leaving aside how casual you're being about their deaths...how did you walk out unscathed? You can't use magic, so what monsters are in your adventuring party? We never even cared to ask last time, but maybe we should have." (Helena)

And there's the first of the two correct questions to ask. Although, I doubt that Nina will like being called a monster. Several of the people in the room look to me nervously, suspiciously, waiting to see what I'll reveal. As I'm preparing to answer Helena, however, a terse voice cuts off my opportunity.

"It's you...isn't it, Great Dragon? You're a member of this adventuring party of Mizuki's. I'm guessing Lady Alto and maybe Lady Zara as well. That's the only way it all makes sense. Queen Elira said that Belmod was killed no more than a week ago, and yet you're already back here. At minimum, you had to have transported Mizuki there. But based on the death toll...you were with him, right?" (Darak)

All of the other nobles snap their heads towards Darak in surprise, and I smile at him appreciatively. I sense a rush of satisfaction from Nina, and I look down in time to see her smiling viciously back at Darak.

"Fufufu...very clever. You are correct! Outside of the Elven Kingdom, I pose as a human adventurer, and serve as a member of Mizuki's party. See, I even have my own guild card! Hahahahah!" (Nina)

I watch in horror as she pulls out her solid gold guild card and flashes it proudly to everyone at the table – this dragon truly has no ability to read a room. I sense disappointment from her when they're not as impressed-looking as she expects. Instead, everyone except Alara and Ilina are staring at her, understandably slack-jawed over her statement. Tessa is the first to semi-recover.

"Great Dragon.....for the life of me....why would you do such a thing? I can understand killing the human emperor, but...why pose as a human...one of these adventurers? Also, why pretend to be Mizuki's subordinate? I can imagine no reason that an Elder Dragon would do such a thing." (Tessa)

Tessa just stares at Nina in open confusion, and Nina smirks back at her.

"Well, for fun, of course? Also, to spend more time with Mizuki. Oh, Mizuki!" (Nina)

Nina turns around to face me with a mischievous smile, and I immediately tense up. Great...what's she going to do now?

"Can we tell them now? You were thinking about doing it soon, right? Will you let me tell them!? Fufufu...I want to see the looks on their faces!" (Nina)

My eyes go wide in shock. Did she literally just do that!? Seriously!? She couldn't have known for sure that I was about to tell them about me! What if she'd messed something up!?

I sigh deeply, and I catch several of the nobles giving me strange looks. Cara, Alyse, Dargo, and Elira in particular look nervous. They aren't clued in to Ilina's plan at all, from what I understand. But they know enough about me to suspect what's going to happen.

I nod in exasperation at Nina.

"Yes, Nina, that's fine. You're correct, I was just thinking that it's about time the nobles know the truth about me anyway. If we're going to do this, though, do you mind?" (Mizuki)

I gesture at the chair Nina is sitting in, which is reserved for the head representative of each group. Nina smiles when she catches on and nods furiously, obviously enjoying the additional dramatic display. She stands from the chair and moves behind it with a smile as I lower myself into it.

As I settle into the chair, I return my attention to the others at the table. Jorah and Tessa look satisfyingly horrified, and Darak and Helena just look confused. Meanwhile, Elira is staring at me in disbelief. As soon as my eyes meet hers, she leans forward with her hands on the table.

"Mizuki!? Are you about to do what I think you're about to do!? Are you sure about this!? Have you really thought this through!?" (Elira)

Everyone turns towards the sound of Elira's shrill voice, then look back at me with nervous expressions. I smile back at everyone and shrug.

"With everything that's happening, I think it's the least I can do. After all, the nobles need to know the truth to do their jobs effectively. Regardless, there's no point in second-guessing anything now, it's too late to turn back. Nina, the floor is all yours." (Mizuki)

Jorah is practically foaming at the mouth at this point, all his earlier calm shattered.

"Human!? What do you think you're doing sitting at this table with us!? And who is this 'Nina' person!? Explain yourself this instant!" (Jorah)

I sense a flood of anticipation from Nina, and I feel her wrap her arms around me from behind and rest her chin on my head. Jorah's face twists like he's experiencing a computing error.

"Fufufu....that would be me, elf. But Nina is the name reserved for those who I respect, so only Mizuki and his friends can call me that. You see, you're all under the impression that I am in charge, and Mizuki is my servant. But in truth, Mizuki is the leader of our group, and I am his wife." (Nina)

As if to cement her point, and further satisfy her penchant for anarchy, Nina runs her fingers along my chest affectionately as she talks. Then, as she calls herself my wife, she leans around and kisses me on the cheek, before turning to stare back at the table of stupefied elves.

I watch as they all stare at us in open disbelief. Elira is watching their reactions nervously, Ilina is giving Nina a disapproving glare, and Cara and Alara have their eyes glued to the other nobles' reactions. Meanwhile, Alyse and Linnea are staring at me in open shock, just like the rest.

After several moments of silence, the nobles begin looking around the room at one another uncertainly, gauging everyone's reactions. After a second, Helena throws her hands up.

"Oh, hell, I'll do it then. Great Dragon, are you screwing with us? Mizuki, is she screwing with us?" (Helena)

Helena looks at me with an uncharacteristically bewildered expression.

"Fufufufu...yes, Lady Helena, Nina is screwing with you. That is, she's intentionally doing something that she knows will elicit a reaction from you that she finds entertaining. However, if you're asking if what she is saying is untrue, then...no. It's all true." (Mizuki)

The nobles faces return to their dumbfounded states, and silence falls over the room once again. Eventually, there's a break in Tessa's expression, and she just shakes her head in exasperation.

"But, Great Dragon.....he's...human.....why?" (Tessa)

Tessa just stares directly at Nina, unable to hide the exasperation on her face. Uhm...rude much? I'm expecting Nina to get agitated, but instead she just slides her arms out from around me and stands up. Then she smiles at Tessa and shakes her head.

"Fufufu...because it pleases me immensely to have him in my life, and as my mate. Why else? As for the other thing....it's true that I am not particularly fond of humans. However, Mizuki is nothing like them. After all, how many humans do you know that can kill Elder Dragons?" (Nina)

After a second or two of processing, that last remark causes a collection of surprised squeals from those in the room that are new to my secret. They all snap their heads towards me. Some of their expressions are full of confusion and skepticism, and a few are even full of fear. However, one is full of indignation, and staring daggers at me.

"Preposterous...all of it! Do you expect us to believe something that absurd human!? Perhaps you wish to pass yourself off this way to undermine or threaten us, but do not think we are foolish enough to fall for it!" (Jorah)

This man really is the dumbest elf I've ever met. I glance over at Tessa, the one that Ilina claims will be our toughest adversary, and I see her watching me with a deeply conflicted expression. I'm a little curious what's going on in her head, but I've got to hurry this along. In fact, now that Nina has had her fun, it's time to just quickly convince them of everything they need to know.

It's critical to reinforce that Nephilim story later on, and Alto's 'you can't copy the trains' story from earlier, by setting my abilities apart from theirs. Seeing is believing, so a demonstration of absurd power is what we need here. I sigh deeply and look towards Elira. She catches my gaze, and I give her a smile. Her eyes widen in anxiety, but it's too late.

I raise my hand into the air, as I pour out magic to fill the room. Several people take notice, including Elira, and they tense up and open their mouths to speak. I even see Jorah's son wrap his hand around the handle of his sword, as he stares at me suspiciously. I'm not waiting for protests, though.

I snap my fingers, then teleport everything, people, tables, chairs, and all, to the reception hall of our mansion. To everyone here, it looks like the borders of the room suddenly morph around them. Naturally, the group erupts into chaos when we arrive at the mansion.

Cries of shock ring out, and a number of chairs are knocked over as people leap from them in surprise. Several of the armed escorts in the room draw their weapons and fix their eyes on me. Helena and Darak are just looking around the room in open disbelief, still seated, while Jorah is several feet away from the table now, staring at me in horror.

Meanwhile, Tessa is standing up in front of her seat, leaning forward with her hands on the table. Her face is sheet-white, and she's staring at me....in wonder, maybe? She is studying me intently, and I do see plenty of fear, but every bit of malice has evaporated. My gaze is torn away from the unexpected reaction as Queen Elira's voice rings out firmly, and I see stress and panic on her face.

My bad, Elira.

"Everyone, calm yourselves! Those of you who have drawn weapons, your Queen commands you to sheathe them this instant! Mizuki, was this really necessary!? You could have at least warned us!" (Elira)

Everyone freezes as the room falls deathly silent, and eyes are fixed in equal parts on myself and Queen Elira. After a moment, a couple of the sword bearers hesitantly sheathe their swords, but some keep theirs drawn, frozen in fear. This is probably a good time to start settling the situation.

I clear my throat, and all eyes immediately snap to me.

"Ehem! I'm sorry for startling you all like that. First, let me say that I did not intend this as an act of aggression. It was clear that Lord Jorah and several more of you were skeptical about Nina's claims. So, this was merely a demonstration to speed along the process of convincing you. You're in no danger, so please put away your weapons and be at ease." (Mizuki)

I pause briefly to survey the people around me. A few of them relax noticeably, and some even put away their swords after a few seconds. However, a couple of them keep their weapons out, and they're eyeing me suspiciously. Both from Tessa's escort. I fix my gaze on them. I know this is a little hypocritical of me after such an incendiary demonstration, but...

"I'm not trying to threaten you two, but please be reasonable. Those weapons would do you absolutely no good. Even if you think I'm manageable, have you forgotten that Nina is an Elder Dragon? Keeping your weapons drawn serves no purpose but to keep the tensions of everyone here raised. I kindly ask that you put them away so we can have a civil discussion." (Mizuki)

The two women wielding daggers glance between one another nervously, but before they can come to a decision, Tessa glances over her shoulder and speaks in a low tone.

"Selena, you and Kathryn put away those weapons....right now. Don't let me see them again." (Tessa)

The younger-looking female escort widens her eyes.

"M-Mother, are you s-" (Selena?)

"Don't make me repeat myself, Selena." (Tessa)

I and Tessa's two escorts widen our eyes in surprise. I can imagine it's for the same reason, because we can't believe Tessa is telling them to not pull weapons on me. On another note, I guess this girl, Selena, is Tessa's daughter.

After a moment, Tessa's two escorts reluctantly sheathe their weapons, and Tessa turns back to me with a calm but intense gaze. I nod at her appreciatively and smile, and she gives a polite nod. Honestly, her drastic change in behavior is starting to freak me out, but that's a mystery for later.

I turn back to scan the faces of everyone else in the room. The only people that have remained seated are Alara, Cara, Helena, and Darak, and everyone else is standing with their gazes locked on me. I try to give a reassuring smile.

"Now that everyone seems a bit calmer, let me answer a few questions that I'm sure you have. First, you are all currently in our home, or rather Alto's home, in the city of Eden. I teleported you all here. Next, most of what we've told you was Nina's doing was actually mine, like the trains and freeing the elven slaves. Third, you should know that the royal family, Lady Alara, and Lady Cara were already aware of my abilities. The reason I am now divulging all this information to the rest of you is as a sign of trust. I want us to help one another deal with the Empire." (Mizuki)

Surprised whispering breaks out, and I see a lot of glances directed towards Elira, Ilina, and Dargo, as well as Alara and Cara. In particular, Dargo and Helena are making 'you motherfucker' eyes at Cara, who is just giving a sheepish smile in return. Similarly, Tessa moves her attention to Alara. Elira gives me a pained glare, probably because I'm making her life progressively more difficult. I see her sigh deeply.

"Alright, that's enough! I can confirm that everything Mizuki is telling you is true. I have known about him since before the royal announcement, as have King Dargo and Princess Ilina. If you have any questions about the royal family's decision, you can direct them at Princess Ilina. She's known Mizuki's secrets the longest, and is the primary reason he's here." (Elira)

All eyes swap to Ilina, and Elira seems to be genuinely relieved to toss the metaphorical talking stick to her daughter. To her credit, Ilina just steps forward politely, and nods her acknowledgement to the others in the room. I see Jorah glance at me briefly, fear still in his eyes, then he turns to Ilina with an exasperated expression.

"Princess Ilina, how long have you known about this!? Why were we, the nobles, not informed that you'd brought such a monstrously dangerous human into our country!? He just kidnapped our entire government, and you're acting like he's not a problem! I think I speak for all of us when I say – we deserve an explanation from you this instant!" (Jorah)

Ilina purses her lips in disapproval.

"First of all, Jorah, I'd encourage you to avoid such hysterical accusations. While it's true that Mizuki brought us here without warning, our Queen has already told you to not treat it as hostile. Furthermore, Mizuki himself has taken no violent actions here, and he clearly only brought us here because of your accusations that he was being dishonest about his abilities. I'm sure that he'd promptly return us to the conference room at the palace if we asked." (Ilina)

Everyone in the room turns to face me expectantly. I just nod my acknowledgement. After all, I don't care what room we talk in. Jorah's eyes light up hopefully, then he turns to face me defiantly. However, I can see a trembling in his hands, and terror in his eyes, as he addresses me with a shaky voice. It's like watching a child try to posture at a bear.

"Y-Yes, then we demand that you do so at once, human! We will overlook your actions for now, because of the grace our Queen and Princess have shown you, but your behavior is unacceptable. Do not try our patience further with your intimidation tactics!" (Jorah)

I just stare at him blankly, absolutely stunned speechless by his sheer stupidity. What do I even say to someone like this? Before I get a chance to decide...

"Shut up, you utter moron. The stupidity of giving orders to a...well, whatever Mizuki is...like he's one of your subjects is unfathomable. Also, you're not any safer back at the palace, Jorah, and this room is more spacious. So, I'd like to stay." (Helena)

I glance at Helena in surprise, and noticing my gaze, she shrugs back at me. She's a freak of nature if she's already regained her calm after what I just did.

"I agree with Helena. In fact, I also strongly encourage us not to return to the palace just yet. Jorah, I know full well that you intend to scream for guards the second Mizuki returns us there. At best, that would just delay everything we need to discuss, and at worst, you'd get people killed. None of whom would be Mizuki." (Cara)

"Yes...that sounds like Jorah to me, too." (Alara)

I glance towards Cara and Alara in surprise following their accusations about Jorah. He wouldn't really be that stupid, would he? Jorah's eyes widen in fear, and he glances between us frantically. Oh god...he totally would.

"What!? How dare you! I-I was going to do no such thing! It's just more appropriate fo-" (Jorah)

"Quiet, Jorah. They are correct, that is exactly the kind of dim-witted thing you would do. I'm not letting you jeopardize the calm that was just starting to settle here. Keep your schemes at bay for the time being. Darak, I assume that we're in agreement on this?" (Tessa)

I'm sure the surprise shows on my face that Tessa just circumstantially supported me against Jorah. However, she's watching Darak now, not me. Darak nods solemnly, keeping his eyes intently fixed on me the entire time.

"Yes, I see no point in changing venue. Princess, my Queen, is that acceptable to you? If so, then please continue with what you were saying, Princess. We apologize for Jorah's interruption." (Darak)

Jorah is sputtering while looking between the other nobles in disbelief, but they're ignoring him in favor of Ilina. Ilina glances at her mother, who nods.

"Yes, Darak, we're in agreement. As for you, Jorah..." (Elira)

Elira turns to fix Jorah with an absolutely blood-curdling glare, and her eyes narrow dangerously.

"If I get even the faintest hint of you trying something as utterly stupid as that again...you'll be blessed beyond belief if I only confine you to a cell for the rest of your life. I don't care about your history or your reasons, your days disrespecting and antagonizing Mizuki are finished. Am I making myself clear?" (Elira)

Jorah seems to visibly recoil at Elira's words, and all the color drains from his face as a painful silence washes over the room. After a moment, he nods meekly without speaking again. Witnessing the end of the exchange, Ilina calmly turns back towards the nobles with a smile.

"Very well then, I think remaining here for now is fine. Now, regarding Jorah's question of how long I've known about Mizuki – it's since the night he freed Alto, Linnea, and the other slaves. Mizuki chose to confide in me as a gesture of good faith. That's in addition to safely returning myself and those poor women to our country through the kind of magic you've just witnessed. As for why I brought him to our country after that..." (Ilina)

Ilina pauses to narrow her eyes at every noble present, resting on Jorah for an especially long time.

"...that should be obvious, especially now. I'll remind you all that, at the time, we were facing potential annihilation by Veyron and the demons. It was Mizuki's assistance that we truly needed – Lady Nedonera wouldn't have gotten involved of her own volition. But Mizuki refused to meddle in a war unless he was sure of the underlying factors, so I invited him to our kingdom as my guest to convince him to assist us. After all he'd done, I thought he'd earned that much trust." (Ilina)

Ilina pauses again to see if there are any questions, and Helena turns to Nina with her eyebrows raised.

"That true, Great Dragon? The part about not helping us unless Mizuki condoned it." (Helena)

All eyes in the room turn to Nina, and she just snorts in return.

"Honestly, do you elves even listen to me? Of course it's true. Every good thing that we've done for you, you owe to Mizuki. However, your tone seems to imply that Mizuki would have stopped me from helping you, which is untrue. I just had zero interest in doing so. Do you get it, now that you know the truth about him? How ignorant you've all been? How ungrateful? Do you have any idea how many times I've wanted to murder some of you for disrespecting my mate, but Mizuki has stopped me from doing so? Truthfully, it's been so frustrating." (Nina)

Goddammit Nina....did you really have to talk about murdering them? We were just starting to calm them down! I sense annoyance from Nina as she finishes her rant, and I see a number of eyes widen in fear around the room as it falls silent. I sigh deeply.

"Nina, I can sympathize with your frustration, but was it really necessary to mention wanting to harm them? Honestly...we're trying to keep things civil here. Everyone, please rest assured that we will not be murdering any of you." (Mizuki)

Nina gives me an agitated look.

"What about Jorah, though? He was going to have guards try and kill us.....if he's rude again, can I maim him a bit? That's fair, right? I think you've been entirely too tolerant with him." (Nina)

I sense a wisp of hopefulness from Nina, while Jorah goes completely pale and starts backing away from the table. I shake my head at Nina in exasperation....what the actual hell is the matter with her? Is she not even trying to hide her bloodlust now that they know about me? My voice grows kind of shrill as I respond to her.

"Absolutely not, Nina! What kind of question is that!? Do not harm any of them, even Jorah! I don't care how annoying he is!" (Mizuki)

I freeze...I let my true feelings slip out there. I forgot to call him Lord Jorah, and I called him annoying. I slowly glance back toward the nobles. Jorah is glaring at me with an indignant expression, but he's obviously too terrified to say anything. Meanwhile, I see Darak staring at me with a.....smile!?

"Fufufu...so even you slip up sometimes, huh? That's okay, we all feel the same way. Besides, after what I've just witnessed...it's strangely reassuring to see. Perhaps we should move on, though. Princess, I believe you were about to explain why we were not informed about Mizuki sooner?" (Darak)

Everyone's gazes hesitantly return to Ilina, obviously still shaken by Nina's brazen declaration. Ilina, who was watching the interruption patiently, nods to Darak.

"Yes, though I think that should also be obvious. First, Mizuki requested our discretion. I believe that's justification enough for not telling you, given how much he's done for us. However, we also shared Mizuki's concern that seeing such a powerful human could only spark fear, and incite problematic animosity from elves. With all due respect, Lord Jorah and Lady Tessa, you two are perfect examples of this. We thought it would be better to first let our people get to know Mizuki in the absence of the fear his power would elicit." (Ilina)

I see Tessa glance at me briefly before staring down at the table with her jaw clenched, but she raises no objection against Ilina's words. Jorah, however, does decide to protest, albeit weakly.

"W-Well, Princess Ilina....I don't think it is unreasonable of me to be cautious of someone so...dangerous. I am only thinking of the safety of our people." (Jorah)

Ilina narrows her eyes at Jorah.

"Your actions have not been focused on our people's safety Jorah, they have been blinded by your hate for humans. If you're truly and objectively thinking of our people's safety, you would be respectful and deferential to those who represented our only hope of survival against Veyron at the time, and who'd done nothing but help the elves. That is what I did – emotions and prejudice have no place in decisions that affect the safety of our people. So, do not try to pass your prejudice off as protective instinct to me." (Ilina)

Ilina's tone comes out harsh and reprimanding, and Jorah shrinks away from her and falls silent. After a moment, Ilina nods and a smile returns to her face.

"Now then. I understand that this revelation about Mizuki has gotten us off-topic, but let's remember that we were discussing a threat from the Empire beforehand. That threat remains, and must be discussed. So, if any of you have lingering questions about Mizuki or his party that are critical for your peace of mind, please ask them now so that we may move forward." (Ilina)

All eyes return to me, and everyone begins glancing between one another, as if wondering who might ask a question that's on all their minds. I see Alyse step forward suddenly, and she nods towards me.

"Mizuki, I have a question that I think everyone would like answered. A lot of what makes you scary now is – we don't understand the nature of your power. The threat of an Elder Dragon, for example, is familiar, though their abilities are unique. But we do not know the extent of your power, and the abilities you've shown us are completely unfamiliar. Also, we're both wary from our history with humans, and unsettled by how unlike them you are. You're...a mystery...and we fear the unknown. So, can you...set our expectations some?" (Alyse)

There's a murmur of sheepish assent from the others in the room, and I see Helena raise her eyebrows at Alyse briefly. Darak also cuts a look at me.

"Huh, I don't know when Alyse got so eloquent and formal, but...yeah. We don't know what to make of you, Mizuki. I'd feel a lot more at ease if I knew what we're dealing with." (Helena)

"I confess, Mizuki, even I'm unsettled by the unknowns surrounding you. You had us under the impression that you couldn't use magic, and even showed us the results of a magic assessment. So, the developments of the last hour have left us.....uneasy." (Darak)

Helena stares at me expectantly, as does the rest of the gathering. So, they want to know what I'm capable of, and why my abilities are so strange? I think I can manage that in a way that will complement Ilina's plans. I smile sympathetically and nod to everyone.

"I understand...allow me to explain. Like Elder Dragons, the nature of my abilities is...distinct. Consequently, Darak, magic tests are not capable of detecting my affinity for magic. I can use all classes of spells that you are familiar with, I do not need incantations, and I have many other abilities that there are no known spells for at all. As for the actual extent of my power..." (Mizuki)

I pause for a moment, taking in the wide eyes around the room.

"...I don't know, truthfully. However, it dwarfs even the Elder Dragons. Though I would never do so, I could kill everyone on this continent. Probably only Azazel himself could stop me. I'm not telling you that as a threat, or to scare you, I'm telling you because you asked for an honest assessment. If you want to know what you're dealing with...well, that's it." (Mizuki)

The room falls deathly silent. Surprisingly, Jorah speaks up next, and it's not entirely hostile or ignorant. He watches me with a gaze that's mostly wary.

"Abilities that monstrous...how did a human acquire them? Even if you say that you mean us no harm, and even if we believe you, I shudder at the thought of another human like you existing. We need to know how to stop one from emerging, or to acquire power of our own to defend against it. I won't feel at ease until I know that." (Jorah)

I nod at Jorah.

"This is simply the way that I am, and I know of no way to give an elf power that could match mine. However, I'm quite confident that another human like me won't pop up – I'm a one-time anomaly. Still, if I turn out to be wrong, and someone like that comes and tries to conquer your people, I promise to do my best to stop them." (Mizuki)

Although, if my theories about magic power are correct, and Azazel has learned his lesson with me, then nobody with my abilities is ever showing up here again. If they did, and they were brazen enough to wipe out an entire country as peaceful as the elves, they're probably also going to elicit Azazel's wrath.

Jorah looks dissatisfied with my answer, and looks away bitterly. Wow, thanks dude. I see what I get for offering to put my neck on the line for you. I scan everyone else's faces, and I see Tessa staring at me hesitantly, like she wants to ask something. When I meet her gaze, I nod encouragingly. She seems to make up her mind.

"I have many questions for you, Mizuki, but I suppose there's only one that's truly pressing. If we're going to openly discuss something like our country's defense, weaknesses, and possibly war strategies with you, then I want to know why. Earlier you implied that, regarding the Empire, you also need our help. If you're as strong as we're being led to believe, then what could you possibly need from us? If you really want to protect the Elven Kingdom, then could you not just subdue any army yourself before they reach our borders?" (Tessa)

Tessa eyes me expectantly, her expression equal parts suspicious and confused.

"Sure, I could do that, but that's not for me to decide. My recent and future actions will affect your country and others on a scale so large that I no longer feel comfortable with unilateral decisions. In other words, within reason I want elves deciding what happens to the Elven Kingdom, not me or anyone else. If I'm being honest, I also need the...counsel...of everyone here." (Mizuki)

Everyone's eyes fly open in surprise, except Ilina, Nina, and Alto. Tessa's skepticism transitions to full-blown confusion. She's giving me a bewildered expression, like I just told her that my birthday's next week and I'd like a blue unicorn.

"You're...asking for us to...advise you? Why? On what?" (Tessa)

"Well...believe it or not, I have zero interest in ruling over anyone, and I'd be particularly incompetent at running a country. Nevertheless, I find myself in a position where my actions will affect whole countries. So, I'd like your counsel on those actions, as people who are experienced with the nuances of government. I find some of your prejudice disheartening, but I respect you otherwise. This country you help run is practically a utopia." (Mizuki)

There are surprised faces all around, and Tessa looks particularly stunned by my response. However, Elira's the first one to voice her thoughts this time.

"Mizuki, am I understanding you correctly? If you had things your way, you're going to come ask us for advice anytime a major event in the world happens, then listen to us tell you what we think you should do? And if anything involving the Elven Kingdom occurs, you'll defer to us as far as it affects our people, and support those decisions? I confess...I'm surprised." (Elira)

Elira is staring at me skeptically, as are most of the other nobles. Her phrasing feels dangerous, though, so I should clarify.

"Well, yes, within reason. Even if it's what your country wants, I won't participate in something that I know will cost innocent elves their lives. For example, I stand firm about the trains. Similarly, I won't kill or harm people who aren't actively threatening you, or whose hostility towards you is completely justified. I also won't stand by if you decide to harm or kill innocent people. As an extreme example, if you started practicing slavery like the humans, I would most certainly interfere in your affairs. I detest slavery, and I don't care who's doing it or why." (Mizuki)

Elira raises her eyebrows in surprise.

"That's it, though? If an Elder Dragon was coming to try and take our country as their own, like Veyron with the demons...you'd just stop them if we asked? Or what if the Empire does send half a million soldiers through Gelrod's Pass to conquer our country? You would help us?" (Elira)

Elira stares at me expectantly, a small smile on her face. I'm fairly certain that I've mentioned this to her before, so I assume that this is a rhetorical question for everyone else's benefits. Glancing around, I see everyone staring at me intently, and Ilina is just smiling.

"In those two cases, yes. If the Empire sends soldiers, simply to conquer your country out of greed, you can count on my protection. Likely, I'd kill a proportion of their army, maybe a hundred thousand, then give them the option for unconditional surrender. If they declined, then I would kill the rest of them. As for Veyron, I do-" (Mizuki)

"Fufufu...you all do not have to worry about Veyron. He's so terrified of Mizuki that he probably won't leave the minor continent the rest of his life." (Nina)

I sense waves of extremely toxic satisfaction rolling off Nina. I'm guessing she's reminiscing about my little jealous rage with Veyron....I sigh internally. I notice that the room has gone completely silent, though, and I look around curiously. Tessa, along with most others, are staring at me with pale faces. Catching my gaze, Tessa narrows her eyes seriously.

"You'd truly kill that many people, that many humans, just to protect us?" (Tessa)

I give her a puzzled look in return.

"Of course I would, and it makes no difference to me what race they are, or how many of them there are. Soldiers in such an invasion made a decision to actively harm innocent people. A thousand, a million, a billion...it doesn't matter to me. If they all made that decision, their lives are worth less than the people they're trying to harm. I consider myself quite reasonable, but make no mistake, I am far from docile. " (Mizuki)

The room falls terrifyingly silent, and I scan the faces around the table. Most of them look conflicted. For a while, the silence drags on, then I hear a hesitant question from Darak's direction – Linnea. She's looking at me nervously.

"Mizuki...what if it were the elves doing the invading, instead of the humans?" (Linnea)

I feel all eyes turn to me again, but I can sense a new fear, hanging thick in the air. I know what I should say, but...it'd be a lie. I sigh deeply and give Linnea a sympathetic look.

"It would depend on your reasons. In the worst case, if you were simply invading out of greed or to exterminate another race purely out of hate, I'd be your enemy. In truth, I should treat you as harshly as the Empire in that scenario, but my friendship with Alto and others would probably cloud my judgement. So, I'm sure I'd try to be as nonlethal as possible in stopping your invasion. However, if you really forced my hand, I would wipe your army out. I genuinely hope you never put me in such a position." (Mizuki)

A tense silence falls over the room for a while, then I hear Alto step forward. I glance over to her, and see her looking between me and the nobles seriously.

"For the record, if that scares you all, then I'm disappointed to call myself an elf. I trust Mizuki's judgement. If the scenario he described truly came to pass, then I wouldn't want him sparing any elves on my account. Fortunately, I seem to have a lot more faith in our people than the rest of you, so Mizuki's words don't worry me in the slightest. " (Alto)

A number of bewildered expressions are directed towards Alto, then I hear Alyse start chuckling. Cara notices and hangs her head in exasperation at her sister's outburst.

"Fufufufu...Alto, you took the words right out my mouth. People who promise you unconditional loyalty are either idiots or liars, doubly so if they promise it to an entire race of people. Mizuki's words should convince you to trust him, not fear him." (Alyse)

The vibe in the room seems to become more conflicted than fearful, and a short silence once again descends over the group. Eventually, Helena lets out a deep sigh and leans back in her chair.

"Honestly, you're absolutely terrifying right now, Mizuki. However, I pride myself on not making emotional decisions, and the truth is that I agree with Alto and Alyse. There's something reassuring about your honesty, even if it makes my blood run cold. You can count on my cooperation going forward." (Helena)

"I suppose that I feel quite similarly to Helena. I'm a bit unsettled by the misjudgments I seem to have made about you, but I also see no reason to be uncooperative. At least now, I feel a bit more confident that I understand how you'll react in a given situation. That's a kind of trust, you could say." (Darak)

That's good enough for me. I give Darak a small nod and look around the table. Jorah catches my gaze and frowns disapprovingly.

"I'm glad that you've shown your true colors, and I don't think I believe that you're as much of a friend to elves as you say. But if all you want is for me to tell you what to do, I'd have done that regardless." (Jorah)

Yup...that response checks out. Also, I can really live without Jorah's wisdom, honestly. I continue looking around the table, towards Cara and Alara. They give small smiles as I meet their gazes.

"I'm not quite as accepting of the humans as Alto is, Mizuki....but you obviously have my support. I owe you a great deal, and I'm thankful for your friendship." (Alara)

"I trust you, too. I'm happy to help. Although...I really wish you would have dialed it back today with your 'snappy' magic and your talk of wiping out armies. It was a little dramatic, right?" (Cara)

After a quick smirk at Cara's comment, I rest my gaze on Tessa. She's looking off thoughtfully, and when she notices me looking at her, she starts studying my face intently. However, she merely looks away after a few moments, and she never says a word.

Eventually, Elira clears her throat.

"Ehem...well, I certainly think Mizuki has been more than forthcoming about himself, and it doesn't sound like anyone objects to a civil discussion with him. If there are no final questions of great importance, we should resume our discussion of the Empire's threat." (Elira)

Elira looks around the room briefly. After a moment of silence, she seems satisfied, and nods her acknowledgement.

"Very well. In that case....Mizuki, could you give everyone a summary of exactly what happened on your trip to the Empire, and any relevant details you've acquired since? I'd like everyone to know why you killed Belmod, why you feel confident that he was going to invade, and what concerns you have about the Empire's future actions." (Elira)

Oof, that's a lot, but I guess it's all important. I nod at Elira.

"Of course, Queen Elira. It's a long story, but I'll be thorough..." (Mizuki)

So, I explain to them everything that happened – unabridged and uncensored. Our summons by the emperor, our decision to go and why, our trip to Rodsgard, our experience at the gate and through the city, and the entire audience with Belmod. I talk about why I waited so long to turn violent, and why I eventually snapped. I explain how I spared Lobe, Nina's lie-detecting, and the demands that I left the Empire.

I also explain the events afterward in Elmesia, and how the Empire is threatening them as well. Finally, I explain my reasons for suspecting their invasion plans – Belmod's comments, Lobe's admissions, and Levi's history. I also make a point to emphasize that Levi successfully infiltrated their country, then faked his own death to protect them from invasion. I know it's a long shot, but I hope that at least helps them hate humans less completely.

After I'm done with my summary, there's a spectrum of emotions in the room. Anger, fear, contemplation, satisfaction, and shock. Mostly shock. Everyone listened quietly, except for a few surprised squeals at certain parts of the story, but now their questions and comments come rolling in.

"Well...I was a little shocked before when you mentioned that your party killed almost seventy people in the Empire. However, after hearing about this Belmod character...his comments...I have to say that your actions seem almost tolerant. I'm surprised you offered the guards a chance to live. But still, why not just spare them altogether? They were no threat, right? And you were capable of just immobilizing them and leaving, it sounds like." (Alyse)

Alyse wears a dark expression as she glances between Alto and me, and it's clear that she's angry at Belmod by proxy. As for her question, though...should I be honest? I suppose I can do that without sounding like a complete monster. I shrug at Alyse.

"I don't just kill people based on whether they're an actual threat to me in the moment. Besides, they could have been a threat to my friends without me there. The only thing I cared about was that they had a choice, and the fact is they chose to spend the last few minutes of their lives harming my friends in service to a cruel emperor. Perhaps they would have surrendered after I demonstrated my abilities and Belmod was dead, but so what? It's hardly commendable to cease harming others only once persistence means failure and certain death." (Mizuki)

I hear Tessa clear her throat following my response, and I look over to see her eyeing me cautiously.

"Ehem...what was the point in fake-groveling to that disgusting emperor, and claiming you'd spy on us, if you had no intention of doing so? You obviously didn't value the guards' lives that much, and you could have easily crushed them and threatened repercussions from the start." (Tessa)

"Well, short of annihilating the whole city, which involves innocents, those actions had little chance of stopping the Empire itself from invading you. Belmod is just a leader who epitomized the problem, not the problem himself. I'd have preferred a non-violent information gathering stage, where the enemy wasn't so wary of me, then use what I learned to more permanently squash the threat. I'm sorry that it didn't work out that way. Besides, I could always go back and kill them, but I preferred to consult Queen Elira before taking actions that drastic. " (Mizuki)

Tessa's eyes narrow and she seems to study my face intently. However, Helena pipes up before she can speak.

"Well Mizuki's motivations are interesting and all, but...am I the only one fixated on the abilities he casually mentioned? Unseen barriers, invisibility...flying...and something that sounds suspiciously like the incantation-less magic that Princess Ilina demonstrated earlier today. Mizuki...is there a connection between you and Princess Ilina's new spells?" (Helena)

I groan internally...I was worried about someone connecting the dots on that after Ilina's little stunt. Oh well, that's why I came up with a half-true cover story. I see Alto and Ilina eyeing me nervously, and Elira and Dargo look curious as well. The latter two know that I can make spell rings and 'teach' people spells like mine, but they don't know the specifics of how. I nod at the expectant Helena.

"Yes. As you've likely guessed, I can bestow some of my abilities onto others, and they don't require incantations. However, there are limitations. I can only do it for a small number of people, and those people have to be...compatible...with the specific abilities I give them. Princess Ilina is someone I've entrusted with certain abilities. Let me be clear, though...I will not be handing out abilities to anyone else – I'm at my limit." (Mizuki)

I quickly direct a thought message to my inner circle, plus Elira and Dargo. Since she doesn't know about the spell rings, I don't include Alyse.

[Please remember – under no circumstances are the spell rings to be discussed with anyone that doesn't already know about them.] (Mizuki)

I single out Elira for an additional thought message.

[Elira, I haven't forgotten my promise to you. When the time comes, your spell ring will be an exception to my verbal statement.] (Mizuki)

I scan the room, taking in the mix of shocked and disappointed faces. I notice Alyse staring at me intently, and I'd swear there's a glimmer of hope in her eyes. What the hell is that about? She's kind of giving me the creeps. I'm interrupted from my thoughts by a shrill Jorah, and I look up to see him glancing around at the other people frantically.

"Forget these other concerns! Did nobody else hear that there is a human who infiltrated our country, and made it all the way to the royal capital!? A human with an invisibility spell is an alarming threat. I'm assuming that you know the whereabouts of this human?" (Jorah)

Jorah directs an accusatory glare at me for the last part. He wouldn't seriously...no, even Jorah's not that stupid. He's probably worried about an unknown element, which is fair. I didn't tell them about my relationship with Levi, just that I knew an adventurer in Elmesia and his history with the Empire. I might as well reassure Jorah. I've done enough antagonizing for the day.

I nod calmly at Jorah.

"Yes, and there's no reason for alarm. He has nothing but goodwill for the elves. As I said, he willingly faked his own death to avoid reporting back to the Empire. He couldn't stand the thought of anything happening to you because of him. I think it's fair to say that he might have saved you all. After all, if Belmod knew the specifics of your country, especially your low population, he'd probably have invaded you already." (Mizuki)

I see Jorah's face twist up in anger, but he manages to keep his tone relatively respectful as he responds. Still, I obviously did the opposite of reassure him.

"So you say, but we have no way of knowing that. He violated our laws by entering our country illegally as a human, and we have every right to his imprisonment and punishment. If you were serious about your claim that you'll support our country's laws and decisions, then you'd turn him over to us." (Jorah)

I feel a surge of immense anger at Jorah...is this guy seriously proposing that I turn over Levi to be imprisoned or killed? After what he did for them? All because of their racist 'no humans' policy? Also, he is grossly misrepresenting what I promised them. I'd be justified in telling him to go fuck himself, and state that any hostility against Levi will put the elves at odds with me. However...I should really try to seem civil at first. So, let's try this...

"I suppose I did say something to that effect, didn't I Jorah? Very well, why don't the nobles take a vote on whether the adventurer Levi should be apprehended and brought to you for punishment. All of you that agree with Jorah's position on this matter, could you please raise your hands?" (Mizuki)

I look around the room after my question, keeping my face and tone as neutral as possible. I see Alto's head snap toward me in surprise. Her eyes are full of concern. Honestly, I don't know if it's because she knows what I'm really up to, or because she thinks I'd actually hand over Levi. She did say that she respects him.

[Stay calm, Alto. They'll be punishing Levi over my dead body. I just thought this was a nice way to seem diplomatic while learning which of the nobles hate humans so deeply that they'd truly punish Levi after what he's done for you.] (Mizuki)

I notice Alto relax, then I turn to take stock of the nobles' responses. I see Jorah's hand go up promptly, while Cara shakes her head. Alara stares at me with a conflicted expression for a moment, then she shakes her head as well. Darak and Helena look thoughtful, but not conflicted, and they're glancing between me and Tessa. They give no sign of their decision.

Turning my attention to Tessa, I notice a frustrated and conflicted expression on her face. She glances at me, then purses her lips.

"I noticed from your story that Lady Nedonera doesn't need a spell to tell if people are lying. So, can I assume that you're sure whether this adventurer would do us harm?" (Tessa)

My eyes widen in surprise at Tessa's question.

"Correct. And yes, I'm quite sure that he means you no harm. However, I'm also surprised by your question, Lady Tessa – it implies that you trust that I'm telling you the truth. That's rather unexpected, I confess." (Mizuki)

Tessa ignores my comment about her trust, as her eyes continue to study my face.

"And you'd genuinely be willing to bring this human to us, if asked?" (Tessa)

I raise my eyebrows at her. Just bring him? Sure...if it were just to talk, as a favor, then return safely home. That's not what she means, but...details.

"I'd be willing to bring him here, yes." (Mizuki)

Under the right circumstances, which these would not be.

Tessa narrows her eyes at me and smirks, then shakes her head.

"I don't see anything to be gained by doing such a thing. I won't condemn the decision to apprehend and punish him if it's made without me, though." (Tessa)

Wow...color me surprised. I turn to face Darak and Helena, who look equally dumbstruck. Darak is studying Tessa intently. When he notices me staring at him, he shakes his head and waves dismissively. I look to Helena and she does the same. I guess that settles it then...almost.

I turn to Elira with a smile, and she's watching me nervously. I also see Jorah fuming to her side.

"Well, Queen Elira, your nobles have a near-unanimous decision. However, you are of course the Queen, and can override their decision if you chose to. So, does the Elven Kingdom want to punish the human adventurer Levi?" (Mizuki)

Elira shakes her head seriously.

"No, I support the nobles' decision. Furthermore, in light of this, and in recognition of his deference to our kingdom's safety, I hereby officially pardon the human Levi of any prior crimes." (Elira)

I smile back at Elira and give a small bow. Meanwhile, Jorah's face only seems to turn more red with anger.

"Very well, then I will support the elves' decision on this matter. I'm pleased to hear that most of you have no desire to punish someone who went to such lengths to protect you, simply because he is human." (Mizuki)

I sense amusement from Nina, but I hear Jorah grumbling. Honestly, I consider telling them all that Levi is under my protection, or having Nina lie-detect on Jorah to determine if he'd try something with Levi. But I don't think Jorah is competent enough for something like that...it's hard enough just getting elves to Elmesia safely.

"Ehem...now that we've gotten that out of the way, there's something I'd like to know, Mizuki. You mentioned these demands to the Empire...specifically, that they had three weeks or so to end slavery in their country and return all existing slaves home. You threatened that, if they didn't, you'd do it yourself and execute their leadership. Is that correct?" (Darak)

"Yeah, that's right." (Mizuki)

I look at Darak expectantly, and he just nods thoughtfully.

"Well...do you actually expect them to comply with that demand? More importantly, how exactly do you plan to carry through with your threats if they don't?" (Darak)

To my surprise, Tessa's voice rings out shortly after.

"I'm also unsure what your expectations are. I'm certain that slavery won't end just because you demanded it. You also can't expect to rescue all the slaves in a country on your own, no matter how strong you are. How will you even find them all?" (Tessa)

I look around at everyone, staring expectantly at me. I sigh deeply and nod.

"Well, no...I don't expect they'll end slavery the first time I ask. It's just a part of forcing their hand. About a week before the deadline I gave them, I'll just remove all the non-human slaves from their country. It should be quite noticeable. I'm hoping that, with all of their slaves already gone, and realizing what they're up against, they'll see the wisdom of just outlawing slavery. Non-human slavery, at least. As for how I plan to remove the non-human slaves..." (Mizuki)

I let a smirk come to my face.

"I have the ability to...sense...people based on their characteristics. It works over extremely large distances, and I can use other abilities on the people I sense. For example, I can locate all the wolf-kin or dwarves in the Empire through this 'sense'. Then, I can teleport them all to me, ten or twenty at a time, in a safe location. Depending on the number of slaves, it might take several hours, or even a whole day, but I don't mind." (Mizuki)

Most of the mouths in the room are now hanging open. Helena however, also looks absurdly curious, and she leans forward with her hands on the table.

"Wait, wait, wait...when you say 'based on their characteristics', what exactly does that mean? How specific are we talking? How much information can you get? Also, are you trying to say that, right now, you could use this sense on say...anyone in our country...from right here?" (Helena)

I nod firmly.

"Correct...the range of this ability is about the width of your country. As for what information I can sense, for people it's pretty much just race, magic power level, and spell class. I can also track objects of various types. For example, if parts of the trains I made were to ever be stolen...I could find them anywhere in your country, without fail. In case any of you were wondering." (Mizuki)

The way Helena is staring at me...I wouldn't be surprised if she asks me if I'm a god. It's making me very uncomfortable. I also see several faces go stiff. I assume it's over my not-so-subtle warning about tampering with the trains, but Tessa is quick to voice another concern.

"If this 'sense' of yours allows you to use your other abilities from afar, does that mean you could just kill anyone in our whole country on a whim? From anywhere, anytime? (Tessa)

Tessa eyes me nervously. I sigh in exasperation. So, she put together the same thing that Ilina once did, huh?

"In theory, yes, but I would never do such a thing. I've never done such a thing." (Mizuki)

Tessa bites her lip nervously, and a tense silence falls over the room. I see several people staring at me in disbelief, including Elira. I guess she didn't know about the specifics of my magic sense, and how it can be combined with abilities other than teleportation. After the silence drags on uncomfortably long, I clear my throat and decide to move on.

"Ehem...well I've answered quite a few questions from you all, so...how about it? Does anyone have suggestions for a better way to deal with the Empire going forward, versus what I already have planned? I'm open to criticisms." (Mizuki)

Most everyone stares back at me blankly, obviously dumbfounded by my suddenly chipper tone. I know I was pretty sudden about the topic change, but...come on. Things were starting to get way too tense, and we were getting off topic. Thankfully, Cara eventually glances around awkwardly before looking at me encouragingly.

"Uhm...Mizuki, I have a suggestion. I know they may not deserve it, but people respond better to positive incentives than threats. If physically possible, you should consider visiting the Empire's new leadership to negotiate. You'd probably find your aspirations easier if they feel like they have some control, and retaliation would be less likely – against you and the slaves. At the very least, it'd be a good ruse to identify their leadership." (Cara)

I raise my eyebrows at Cara. I see what point she's trying to make, but...do I really want to offer them a reward just for not enslaving people? My original plan was kind of slapped together on the spot, and I didn't have the clearest head at the time, so...perhaps Cara's idea is the more reasonable one. I refuse to let them keep up with their slavery practices now that the ball has been set in motion, but maybe I could try the carrot with them again...

"I agree with Cara. In fact, I'd consider such an approach before you rescue the non-humans in the Empire. After all, it sounds like it could take you multiple days to rescue them all. It's possible that, after your actions are noticed, the Empire could start maiming or killing the slaves to make a point. Or, even more likely, there'd be a movement to violently 'reclaim' the slaves from the demi-human territory." (Darak)

"Agreed...your approach seems foolhardy, Mizuki. Even if the Empire officially outlaws slavery like you ask, what will you do about rogue elements within their country that would routinely raid the demi-human villages afterward? What you're proposing would only create more of a market for such people's...services. Powerful though you are, you don't seem omniscient, and I'm assuming that you still sleep. Ideally, the Empire needs to eagerly combat slavery on their own, and you threatening annihilation won't motivate them forever." (Helena)

Surprise slips onto my face following Darak's and Helena's unhesitant support of Cara's idea. They really think I should backtrack and go negotiate with the Empire, too, before even rescuing the slaves? I guess I see their points, but...what about the demi-humans? Willingly leaving them in slavery while I decide how to reward their captors for their release...that doesn't sit right with me. On the other hand, maybe it's not my decision to make.

I turn to Zara, who is watching me with a neutral expression.

"I appreciate your advice, everyone. However, I'd like to know...Zara, what do you think of all this? I realize that you can't speak for all demi-humans, but you're the person most able to sympathize with those still enslaved in the Empire. Do you think it'd be better to delay their rescue to try and negotiate with the Empire as has been suggested?" (Mizuki)

Zara purses her lips thoughtfully, and remains silent for several moments. After a while, she steps forward and addresses the room with a skeptical tone.

"I'm inexperienced, and I haven't ever negotiated with the rulers of a country. My time with Mizuki has also taught me the value of letting others feel like they're in control. However, one part of your suggestions makes no sense to me...what is Mizuki supposed to negotiate? Let them keep half their slaves? Only kidnap a hundred demi-humans per year? If he's to reward them, what would they want that you'd feel comfortable with Mizuki giving them?" (Zara)

Honestly, Zara has a point. I'm not giving them trains, and I'm sure as hell not letting them keep those slaves. Weapons are extra off-limits. I could probably offer them medicine or something, but based on how Rodsgard's citizens were treated, I doubt that'd interest them. So...money? I'm willing to whip up a box of platinum coins and buy all the slaves they have, so long as it isn't used to perpetuate slavery. I can't think of anything else, though.

The nobles are silent for several moments, glancing at one another, then Darak sighs and shrugs.

"Naturally, if you had enough money you could just bargain with that, but I'm sure money alone isn't enough to make them peacefully accept the loss of all their slaves. Naturally, we all hate the idea of you giving them trains or anything dangerous. I'm sorry to say that the only way to know if there's anything they want that you're willing to give them is to try and hold negotiations." (Darak)

Yeah...figures. I hear Ilina clear her throat, and we all look to her in surprise.

"Ehem...since Mizuki's connection to our country is known by the Empire, and they've already attempted to exploit it once, it's possible they will ask you to exploit your access to our country in some way. After all, your witness, Lobe, surely conveyed that you were open to spying on us before Belmod threatened your party members." (Ilina)

My eyes widen, and I hear a squeal of surprise from Jorah.

"Wha-!? Well obviously that is out of the question!" (Jorah)

Jorah turns to me with a bewildered glare. For once, I agree with him. I'd just go all scorched earth on the Empire before I actually sell out the elves. I glance at Ilina, and I see her smiling at me calmly. She almost looks smug, even. Elira, however, merely rolls her eyes at Jorah.

"Jorah, settle yourself. Obviously, that's not what Princess Ilina was suggesting, and I doubt Mizuki would be inclined to such an arrangement either." (Elira)

I nod my acknowledgement to Elira, and Jorah seems to relax modestly, but Ilina just smiles mischievously.

"Actually, if it would benefit the negotiation to end slavery in the Empire...I think that's exactly what Mizuki should do." (Ilina)
