"So, what did you think of Eden?" (Mizuki)
It's the morning of the grand opening for Eden, and I'm talking with Kara, Alara, Zara, Cera, Nina, and Alto in the family room of the mansion. Kara and Cera were given our other guest room last night, but they didn't return with Alara until late, so I thought it polite to let them rest.
Kara smiles happily, but Cera interjects before she can respond.
"Mizuki, the hot spring was awesome! Mom said we had to try it since we climbed all those stairs, but then she was scared because she thought there would be private areas, and she didn't want to be naked with other people around! But then…" (Cera)
Cera is blabbering uncontrollably, but Kara cuts him off with a horrified expression when he mentions her being naked.
"Cera! Don't say that!" (Kara)
Kara is obviously embarrassed and seems to have a hard time making eye contact with us. Alara is just looking at her, amused. Chill out, Alara, not everyone is as comfortable with nudity as you are.
"Fufufu…let me guess, Cera. Then Lady Alara showed you that there were those big circles called jacuzzi that you could sit in, and that they were enchanted to keep people from seeing you?" (Mizuki)
Cera nods his head furiously in excitement. Alto, who saw the jacuzzi and surmised they involved photon manipulation, looks envious. Kara, having recovered, eyes me with curiosity.
"Yes, that was so strange, Mizuki! If they didn't have the little mirrors, I wouldn't be able to tell when we're protected from view. Even still, I was so nervous, I had Cera check them from the outside to make sure. I've never seen any kind of magic like that, much less an enchanted item." (Kara)
Good, I'm glad that I thought to put the mirrors for peace of mind.
"Fufufu…I'm glad you both liked them. Yes, the strange magic was my Lady's work, like the trains. What about the city itself, though, would you want to live here? We have big plans, but right now it's just some nice streets with a train, inn, hot spring, and some basic houses – I wasn't sure it would appeal to you like this with so few people." (Mizuki)
Kara nods sympathetically.
"Yes, I was concerned about that as well at first. Lady Alara showed us the plans to add shops all along the main streets, and she told us that there are many merchants visiting today who might start their businesses there. She also said that you suggested building a school here and making it free for children that are citizens of Eden…is that true?" (Kara)
Kara is looking at me hopefully, and I smile warmly and nod in return.
"Correct, I suggested it and Lady Alara seemed receptive. I'm also suggesting that she construct a large building for indoor recreation, that we can fill with unique games for children and adults to both enjoy. There will also be a large section of valley next to the lake that's left as greenery and will contain things for outdoor recreation, called a park." (Mizuki)
Kara takes this all in, and her smile becomes warmer as she listens.
"If you're planning all that, the school especially, and this place is only a two-hour ride by train to Avalon, then Cera and I would like to move here. With you, Lady Alara, and Lady Nedonera all working that closely together, I'm sure we won't have to wait long before this is an envious place to live." (Kara)
Alara laughs and interjects.
"Fufufu…you are correct Kara, I am very motivated to make Eden somewhere worth living, and so are they. So, do you know where you'd want to move to within Eden, and when you can start working?" (Alara)
Kara nods.
"Yes, we'd like to have our own house built when possible – we're planning to just stay at the inn until then, if that's alright? I can start working today if there is someone to watch Cera, and if I'll have time later to go to Avalon and collect some of our things." (Kara)
Alto immediately looks at me hopefully…I think I know what she wants. I smile and give her an approving nod, and she turns back to Kara excitedly.
"Kara, we'd be honored if you'd continue staying with us in the guest room downstairs. We insist – there's no reason for you to stay at the inn. Also, I will be watching Cera for you until we find someone else trustworthy, and we can go collect your things this evening." (Alto)
Kara looks surprised and glances at Nina and me.
"Of course, Alto makes a good point. Fufufu…Cera can help me test out the new games!" (Nina)
"Fufufu…it's Alto's house, technically, so you don't need to ask us. Still, it's fine with me. You should know that there is only one large bath, though. If you want to use it alone, just let the rest of us know in advance and we'll respect your wishes." (Mizuki)
Kara gives me a puzzled look, and she becomes embarrassed. Cera has a confused look on his face, and shortly voices both of their thoughts.
"Mizuki, do you take baths with girls?" (Cera)
Kara turns red and begins averting her gaze. Alara is stifling laughter, barely, and Alto and Zara are watching me expectantly. Nina reeks of amusement.
Screw them for not explaining this! Why should I be shamed!? I was all for privacy, but they are so nonchalant about us bathing together…even Alto!
I thought for sure she'd have some boundaries, until she just climbed into the bath with me the other day. When I voiced my surprise, she just shrugged and called it 'research'! Research of what!?
"Uhm…sometimes, but not with everyone here. It's a really big bath, so it's more like we're at the hot springs together." (Mizuki)
'Not everyone here' at the same time, at least. I want to make it sound like Alara is excluded in case her being a noble would cause issues. Cera seems to think it over carefully…I'm way too nervous about this.
"Hmm…that makes sense!" (Cera)
Kara is staring between Cera and me in horror, like she's watching me corrupt her kid in real time. Don't look at me like that, Kara! I don't like lying to children! I quickly try to change the subject.
"So, I guess we all better get started with our tasks! Since Kara has accepted the job – her, Lady Alara, and Zara should probably leave for the grand opening of Eden. My Lady, didn't you have some orcs you needed to meet with?" (Mizuki)
Nina's eyes go wide, and Alara just smirks at me like she knows what I'm doing.
"Yes, thank you Mizuki! I must leave at once!" (Nina)
"Fufufu…Mizuki makes a good point, Kara, we should depart." (Alara)
I sigh in relief that they're backing me up. I wasn't sure they would. Nina eagerly leaves the room without another word, then the others stand as well, and we all say our farewells. When the room is empty, I'm alone with nothing to do.
"Hmm…maybe it's about time that I checked in at the guild. After all, it's been over a week since we made S-rank…I wonder what developments that has brought." (Mizuki)
I smile eagerly in solitude, then teleport to Elmesia.
¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
"So, you finally came back to inspect the shit-storm you kicked up? Honestly, I wonder why you even joined the guild, only dropping by once every week or two. It's not like you're taking jobs during that time." (Gerard)
I give Gerard a sheepish grin.
When I got to the guild, the other adventurers were quick to notice me, and I got swarmed with questions about our S-rank status and the Elven Kingdom. Safe to say, word has spread. Thankfully, Melanie frantically directed me to Gerard's office. Lately, it seems to be my only destination when I arrive.
"There's just other things my party and I needed to handle. Besides, if you ever need us to take certain jobs, you can just ask. I'll try to stop by once a week until things calm down in case you need to speak with us. On to why I came back…you're right on the mark. So, did anything interesting happen?" (Mizuki)
Gerard snorts, and he pulls a half-meter tall bundle of letters off the floor next to him and throws them at me on the couch.
"Fan mail? I'm flattered…did you write any of these?" (Mizuki)
Gerard ignores my question and shakes his head in exasperation.
"That's nothing, those are just the letters addressed to you. There's an entire room filled downstairs with the ones addressed to Nina. Hell, even Alto's stack of mail is bigger than yours – apparently an elf that willingly tolerates humans garners a lot of interest. Her presence in the S-rank party put a spotlight on her." (Gerard)
"Hmm…that's good to know. I'll also need to take Alto's stack of mail then. Those will probably be the most useful. My whole party can come back later for the rest. Across all our mail, was there anything I should be especially aware of?" (Mizuki)
Gerard gives a puzzled expression when I mention it being useful, but he nods in response to my question.
"Yes, that would be the letters that were sent to me personally with the express demand that they be read to the S-rank party. Here, there are four." (Gerard)
Gerard hands me a small bundle of very fine-looking letters from his desk drawer. I raise my eyebrows at him.
"Love letters in the fan mail? Are they from anyone I know?" (Mizuki)
Gerard rolls his eyes, and his voice becomes heavy with sarcasm.
"I don't know, ever had a wild night with the Elmesia council, the kings of Freden or Balzuth, or the emperor of the Ralzen Empire?" (Gerard)
I can feel myself stiffen…all of them!?
"Wow, Gerard, please try to take this seriously. Those are important people, you know. Anyway, what did they say? The short version." (Mizuki)
"Sorry, I assumed you were literate, but I guess I was supposed to tell you anyway. Short version is that the Kings of Freden and Balzuth invite you to come to their kingdoms and have an audience with them at your convenience, and the Elmesia council requests a meeting to discuss a job opportunity for your party." (Gerard)
"I'm swooning already. What about the Ralzen Empire?" (Mizuki)
Gerard ignores my very funny comment and directs a morbid expression at me instead.
"Emperor Belmod of the Ralzen Empire orders you to appear before him, your rightful ruler, a week from yesterday. Their capital city, Rodsgard, is deep inside the Kingdom, so I'd start traveling today if you want to make this deadline." (Gerard)
Wow…my ruler, huh? An order, too, not an invitation. That's a bold guy…I already dislike him. Obviously, I'm not worried about the timeline.
"Is Emperor Belmod as charming as he sounds?" (Mizuki)
Gerard nods solemnly.
"Even more so." (Gerard)
Gerard explains that Emperor Belmod acquired the throne less than a year ago, after the death of his father. Since, he's been on a real 'make the Empire great again' power trip.
He thinks the Empire should rule with an iron fist, and he doesn't recognize Elmesia's long-standing independence. In his eyes, they're still an Empire territory that's just been given too much leeway.
Similarly, he thinks the Empire has been too wary of the Elven Kingdom. He's not fond of non-humans and probably doesn't have any issue with the underground slave trade either.
There are many in the Empire who idealize the expansionist days of their history and consider him a welcome change in leadership. According to Gerard, it's only a matter of time before his ideals push the Empire to become even more antagonistic to non-humans and their countries.
"Alright, thanks Gerard. I should leave and figure out what to do about these developments. I'll be in touch!" (Mizuki)
I rise from the couch to leave Gerard's office. Before I make it to the door, however, he calls out.
"Mizuki, one last thing before you go." (Gerard)
I turn around and give him a curious look.
"Cedonia is in the Ralzen Empire, and elves are pretty isolated from humankind. If elven slaves are freed inside the Empire, and then within a couple of weeks a powerful adventuring party is endorsed by their kingdom, it's not likely to be viewed as coincidence by Emperor Belmod." (Gerard)
Yeah, I figured as much. Initially, I assumed that underground slavers wouldn't be inclined to spread word about their illegal activities. However, the loss of so many guards, the mysterious nature of my jailbreak, and the revelation that Emperor Belmod doesn't seem to condemn the illegal slave activities make me less confident that the emperor will be ignorant of the events.
"Understood…thanks for the warning, Gerard. Maybe I'll quit being a smartass since you're being this nice to me." (Mizuki)
Gerard gives me a rare, bewildered look.
"You don't actually mean that, do you?" (Gerard)
I give Gerard a stupid grin and shrug, then leave his office without another word. Just outside the door, I sigh deeply and mutter to myself.
"I have a bad feeling about this." (Mizuki)
¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
After leaving the guild, I teleport back to Avalon and take a scenic flight around the Elven Kingdom to clear my head.
From what I can tell, the terrain of the central and eastern territories is mostly plains, with some forestlands scattered throughout – I see no evidence of large deserts, marshlands, swamps, or mountain ranges. So, hot springs might be uncommon in the developed parts of this country. That's nothing but good news for us!
After my joyride, I arrive in Eden with just a short amount of time remaining until the arrival of Eden's first guests. I am currently walking with Alto and Cera through the empty streets of Eden, towards the train station.
"So, what did you do today?" (Mizuki)
Cera beams at the question.
"We did lots, Mizuki! Miss Alto made me some food, and she read books to me in the library, and we played hide-and-seek in the mansion, and…" (Cera)
Cera continues for a minute or two, and he seems excited about it all, but I'm sure Alto was struggling to keep him entertained in this place as-is. I smile at her approvingly.
[Nice job Alto, he seems like he had a really good time!] (Mizuki)
I see Alto's expression become happier, and a light smile forms on her face. After Cera finishes his summary, I nod excitedly and agree that he had a very good time and that I am very jealous. Then, I recall that there was something I wanted to ask Alto.
"Alto, are there any other natural hot springs that the elves regularly use? Most of the terrain east of here seems to just be plains and forestland." (Mizuki)
Alto shakes her head and smiles.
"No, this will be a first in our country. We have artificial hot springs – essentially large stone baths that are built outside. There are also some adventurous elves that will make trips into Gelrod's Pass, where there are hot springs. There's nothing like Eden's natural hot spring that's easily accessible." (Alto)
Perfect…something that we have a virtual monopoly on. I wasn't expecting that when I suggested it to Alara over a week ago. As I reflect on our good luck, we arrive at the train station. There are already a few hot spring and inn employees stationed as guides for the commoners.
After some time, a shiny object can be seen down the railway – the train is almost here. Eventually, the train slows to a stop in front of us.
Alara and Zara are the first to step out, then about a dozen other passengers follow them off to the side – the invited guests. After, dozens more people pour out of the train and begin walking around excitedly.
After several minutes, the common passengers make their way in a couple of directions at the behest of the workers, and the train begins its return to Avalon for the second group of passengers.
I smile and wave as we walk over towards Alara and her group. When I get closer, I freeze in shock.
"Kudra!? I didn't know you'd be coming here as an invited merchant!" (Mizuki)
Kudra, the kur'kes seller I first met while touring Avalon with Ilina, is among the attaché with Alara. Hearing my statement, he smirks, but Alara is the first to speak up in surprise.
"Mizuki, how did you come to know Avalon's most successful businessman?" (Alara)
I direct a bewildered glance at Alara, and then Kudra. He never said he was such a big deal! Why was he personally running a tiny ass stand outside the palace like some nobody!?
"Yes, I wondered that as well."
I turn in surprise to the sound of another voice to find…a beautiful red headed elven girl – Cara Egris. My eyes go wide in surprise when I see her. She should be at least a four-day journey away from here right now.
"Lady Cara!? How are you here?" (Mizuki)
Cara narrows her eyes at me suspiciously.
"Ah, so you did make plans knowing the nobles would be in an information lag as they traveled. Fufufu…I bet the other nobles are kicking themselves right now. It's a good thing I hung around Avalon for a couple of days, just in case." (Cara)
Oh, I'm busted…time for a subject change.
"So, Lady Cara, Kudra, did you enjoy the train? Lady Cara, why didn't you bring any guards with you?" (Mizuki)
Kudra nods thoughtfully, while Cara snorts at my blatant evasion. Alara is still looking on in confusion, and the other businesspeople seem keenly interested in the unfolding events.
"It was splendid, Mizuki, truly a marvel of transportation. My only complaint is that it was all gray with hard seats. Would some decoration or softer seating have been too much to ask for?" (Kudra)
That's actually not a bad idea…I should talk to Percivil.
"I assumed I'd be safe here, and I wanted to speak to you in private. As for the train…yes, I didn't think such fast travel could exist. It seems that it was built only a day after we parted ways, Mizuki, but was never mentioned in our meetings. Care to explain?" (Cara)
Hmm…
"Of course, Lady Cara. Aside from the fact that our meetings were not supposed to discuss such things, my Lady had no intention to build this train when you and I last spoke." (Mizuki)
That's all technically true. I see Cara gearing up to say something troublesome again, so I change the subject.
"Lady Alara, to answer your question, Kudra and I became acquainted when Princess Ilina showed me around Avalon. He was just running a small kur'kes stand personally, so I had no idea of his business standing. Kudra, I'll speak to our craftsman about making the train more comfortable – I appreciate the feedback." (Mizuki)
"Tch…you're still doing that, Kudra? Shouldn't someone your age consider retiring?" (…)
I hear a woman's voice ring out, and I turn my attention to its source – a mid 30s-looking elven woman, with brown eyes and shoulder-length dirty blonde hair. While her words sound harsh, her face has a playful smirk, and Kudra doesn't seem offended.
"What are you rambling about, Ulta? That stand was my very first business venture, and I will periodically operate it until the day I die. Regarding my age, I'm sure Mizuki considers you ancient as well. Maybe you should retire, hmm?" (Kudra)
Huh, so that's why he does it? That's kind of wholesome. Ulta turns to me with her eyebrows raised, and she is eyeing me with slight annoyance.
"Is that so? You think that I'm old, Mizuki?" (Ulta)
I put on the most charming smile I can and bow, then shake my head politely.
"I could never call someone as beautiful as yourself old, Miss Ulta, regardless of the difference in our life experience." (Mizuki)
Ulta's smile transitions to one of amusement, and I see Alto, Zara, and others raising their eyebrows at me. Kudra looks like he's stifling laughter.
"Fufufu…my, quite the flatterer, aren't you? Can all the elven women here expect your empty compliments?" (Ulta)
"Actually, Miss Ulta, I spent several evenings with Mizuki, and he never called me beautiful." (Cara)
Cara is speaking to Ulta with an annoyed tone, while glaring at me. Alara is staring at me curiously.
"Agreed, I've never received such an unsolicited compliment from Mizuki." (Alara)
Ulta looks back to me in surprise.
"Well then, it's nice to meet you, Mizuki. Since I already know about the infamous human serving an Elder Dragon, I'll return the favor. I'm a chef, and I run a few restaurants in Avalon. I even have one in Lady Cara's capital city." (Ulta)
I smile appreciatively.
"If your restaurants span multiple territories, and you're so familiar with Kudra and Lady Cara, I can only assume that you're quite talented. In that case, I hope you'll look favorably on your tour of Eden, and particularly Lady Alara's vision of its future. It'd be an honor to have an esteemed chef open a restaurant here." (Mizuki)
"Fufufu…well your shameless flattery is certainly a good start. Will you be joining us on this tour?" (Ulta)
Ulta looks at me expectantly, but I have other concerns. I look past Ulta towards Alara and her other invited guests.
"I'm certainly happy to do so if nobody here objects. I won't be offended if you don't want a human accompanying you." (Mizuki)
There's a mix of surprised and confused expressions among the guests, but nobody says anything negative. That's much better than I expected, and I'm sure the surprise shows on my face.
One elven man appearing mid 50s steps forward from the invited guests, and he ushers a 20s-looking elven man along with him – the young man looks a little apprehensive. The older one speaks out.
"Hello Mizuki, I run a number of farms around the kingdom. My name is Toki, and this is my youngest child, Koda. I was hoping to purchase some land in Lady Alara's territory to develop into a new farm. This would be for Koda to learn our trade and some responsibility by assisting with it. If you don't mind, we'd appreciate it if you joined our tour." (Toki)
That's surprising…I can't deny that I'm curious. I nod at Toki and turn to Koda with a curious smile.
"I'm happy to help if I can. Mister Koda, it's nice to meet you." (Mizuki)
Koda looks bewildered by my direct comment at him. Toki rolls his eyes and gives Koda a light nudge on his back.
"N-Nice to meet you Lord Mizuki…you don't need to call me Mister, just Koda is fine." (Koda)
Wow…Lord? I guess I don't have to worry about this poor kid being hateful towards me.
"Fufufu…very well, Koda. You should also just call me Mizuki. I have no honorifics…I am just a servant." (Mizuki)
I see Alara suppressing a smirk, and Cara rolling her eyes, following my designation as a servant. Koda looks surprised, but he doesn't say anything.
"Well, now that we've settled the introductions, can we get started with the tour, Lady Alara?" (Cara)
As she says this, Cara walks forward from the other guests and loops her arm through mine. Several shocked glances can be seen from the other guests, including a dumbfounded stare from Koda. Alto and Zara both smirk at me.
I groan internally, and I catch Alara chuckling.
"Fufufu…of course, Lady Cara. Everyone, please follow me this way!" (Alara)
Alara leads our group west along the street. As she does, she explains the general layout of the city. This includes noting that almost every piece of street-adjacent space will be dedicated to private businesses, which the guests seem interested in. After hearing it, they begin observing the layout of the city more closely, as if scouting the most desirable street-side locations.
When the inn comes better into view, she identifies it and explains that the land it's on, enclosed by the street, will be reserved for city-owned buildings.
"At present, we have plans for at least two other buildings in this area. One will be a school for reading and writing, basic magic, and basic to advanced math. The other will be an indoor recreation center, which will include a plethora of new forms of entertainment not seen in the kingdom before – we expect it to be quite the attraction once it's finished." (Alara)
One of the guests gives a skeptical expression. He's a 30s-looking elven man, tall with a somewhat pretentious vibe.
"Lady Alara, I can understand everything else, but how do you plan to recruit someone qualified to teach advanced math? There are only a few elves in the entire kingdom who've mastered such topics, and they are all at the prestigious Elven Magic Academy. Even those who have successfully completed their classes only number around a dozen – I was one myself." (…)
Alara looks taken aback by the sudden challenge…I'm guessing she hasn't considered how she was going to explain that yet. Her eyes glance at me pleadingly. I groan internally.
How should I play this? I can't contradict Alara, but this guy seems like the skeptical type that's going to want proof. Hmm…
[Hey, Alto, you're about to be our resident scholar, so play along. If he asks you a math-based question that you're not sure you can answer, then just scratch your nose and I'll tell you the answer.] (Mizuki)
I see Alto nod subtly, and I turn to address the guest.
"I can answer that, Mister…?" (Mizuki)
He turns to me in surprise, but he seems more curious than offended.
"Err…Garvin. I don't believe we've had the pleasure. I manage a couple of banks in the kingdom. I'm eager to hear your answer to this question, Mizuki." (Garvin)
Ahh, that explains the math knowledge. I flipped through the most advanced math book I could find in the palace library – written by one of those Academy guys – and the problems were all trivial by Earth standards.
The most advanced thing was basic compounding interest calculations, and they only involved discreet intervals. Even the author's 'cutting edge' math they mentioned developing was just a method to approximate the slope at a point along simple curved lines. Even basic calculus would blow their minds.
I nod at Garvin politely and gesture towards Alto.
"Alto here is an exceptionally gifted scholar, and I can assure you that her math knowledge is at least as advanced as what's taught at the school you speak of. As you noted, it will be rare that she needs to teach advanced math classes, so other teachers would be employed outside of that subject matter to not infringe on her time too heavily." (Mizuki)
Garvin gives me a puzzled look and turns to Alto.
"Miss Alto, forgive me for being so blunt, but…I know everyone alive who passed such advanced math classes at the Academy. I'm certain you are not one of them." (Garvin)
Alto nods with a neutral expression.
"That's correct. I did attend the Academy, but I was one of the magic scholarship students – I have a power level over 3 and every elemental class affinity. So, I focused on magic and only took basic math classes. Still, as you know, all students have access to the library, and I'm quite fond of reading. If you're skeptical, you could always ask me a question." (Alto)
Atta girl, Alto! Wait…did she really go to this fancy Academy as a scholarship student? Honestly, that would make the most sense given how educated she is as a commoner, and it would explain her studious nature. I'll have to ask her about it later.
Garvin gives Alto…to call it a skeptical look is a huge understatement…but he's skeptical, nonetheless. He pulls out a fold of paper and something that looks like a pencil.
"Very well. Assume you have a product that takes a month to produce in parallel, the product would always be sold for a twenty percent profit, you only have your starting funds and no other streams of income, and all product would be sold immediately after production. What would be the maximum profit on your starting investment after three months?" (Garvin)
Pfffft…it is literally an interest problem. I can do that in my head even with compound interest.
Alto looks a bit nervous, and Garvin extends the paper and pencil towards Alto with a smug expression. Alto scratches her nose.
[Alright Alto, repeat after me. We're going to wipe that smug grin off his face.] (Mizuki)
I start giving Alto instructions by thought message. Alto extends her hand and pushes the folded paper back towards Garvin, and she shakes her head.
"That's simple, I won't need paper. Also, you forgot to mention whether parallel production is completely scalable without a change in the production time or costs, whether production costs must be paid up front and in full, and whether multiple parallel productions can be staggered in sequence, among other things. In the simplest scenario, you could reinvest all profits into each production cycle, and you'd have up to a 72.8% return on investment after three months." (Alto)
Garvin's mouth is hanging open, and Cara is looking at Alto in bewilderment. Zara just looks bored. Alara has gone pale, and she's staring at me, so I give her a quick smirk. Kudra begins laughing hysterically.
"Hehehehe…oh boy, she really got you there, Garvin! You want to take that paper there and check her numbers? I know you can't do it in your head! Fufufufufu…you should let her run your banks, so you'd lose less money!" (Kudra)
Kudra keeps laughing hysterically, and Garvin looks down at the ground embarrassed. His face is a slight shade of red. To his credit, he handles it like a real champ after a few minutes of silence.
"Ehem…Miss Alto, I owe you an apology. You're obviously more than qualified for what Lady Alara described." (Garvin)
Alto gives a polite nod and smile.
"Don't let it trouble you…I accept your apology. I can't take all the credit, either, I had an excellent teacher." (Alto)
[Alto, is that praise for me that I hear? I could get used to this.] (Mizuki)
I see Alto purse her lips. I'd like to think it's done in a grateful way.
At this point, we come to the center of the city, and Eden's massive valley lake can be seen off in the distance to our left. Alara takes the opportunity to redirect conversation and mention that this housing section will have lakefront properties for sale.
"Now, let's make our way to the hot spring. During Eden's early development, it will be the biggest city-owned attraction until the recreation building that I mentioned is finished. It's long, but the walk up the mountain is quite beautiful. Our craftsman is currently working on a magic item that transports people up the mountain more easily. So, if you don't enjoy the walk, it may not be necessary in the future." (Alara)
Alara begins leading the group towards the hot spring stairs, and I feel Cara tighten her arm around mine. I glance over to see her giving me an annoyed look, and she speaks to me softly once I meet her gaze.
"Can I assume that means your Lady will be giving Eden another gift like the train soon?" (Cara)
I grin mischievously at Cara and shrug, then whisper back.
"Perhaps, it's not certain yet." (Mizuki)
Cara seems troubled by my response, and she is silent for a moment. Eventually, she looks back towards me curiously.
"Are you and the rest of Lady Nedonera's party staying here permanently?" (Cara)
"For the foreseeable future, at least." (Mizuki)
"Where? Is it one of those homes I saw to the south when I got off the train? I can't imagine your Lady staying at a basic inn." (Cara)
I smirk over at Cara and shake my head, then subtly turn us so she's facing south, and gesture to the mansion on top of the mountain. She gives me a puzzled expression as I do, but after a few moments of squinting, her eyes go wide in shock, and she turns back to me.
"Mizuki…did you build a mansion on top of a mountain…in a week's time? Also, is Lady Alara really letting you all stay in her new family home?" (Cara)
She is staring at me apprehensively.
"Actually, it's Alto's house, and Lady Alara is staying with us. She did give us permission for it to be there, though." (Mizuki)
Cara seems to grow more pale than usual, and she falls silent. At this point, we make it to the base of the stairs. Suddenly, Cara whispers to me in a shrill voice.
"Mizuki! I can't help but notice that the end of that street in the northern border of the valley has a similar shape as the train station, and it is right near a large opening between the mountains! Is your Lady thinking about building more trains!?" (Cara)
Uh oh, busted. I kind of expected that, though, the layout is obvious. I keep a neutral expression, but nod towards Cara in response. She sighs in exasperation and just looks forward as we begin climbing the mountain stairs to the hot spring.
When we're about halfway up, I feel Cara pressing against me with a tighter grip than before. When I glance at her, I see her looking over the edge of the stairs with a fearful expression.
"I didn't know that you were afraid of heights, Lady Cara." (Mizuki)
I give her a teasing smile, but she snaps her head back towards me and her amber eyes glint dangerously.
"This isn't funny, Mizuki. I've never been on a mountain…most elves haven't." (Cara)
Well…now I feel bad. I sigh deeply and calmly detach our arms from one another. Cara gives me a face of betrayal, but I grab her by the shoulders and quickly swap places with her – now I'm the one closer to the mountain's edge. Then, I loop my arm back through hers.
"Is that better?" (Mizuki)
Cara seems flustered, but grateful.
"Uhm…y-yes, thank you." (Cara)
After that, we continue walking up the mountain, with Alara fielding some of the guests' questions. Eventually, we arrive at the hot spring facilities.
Most of the guests are breathing heavier than normal. However, that's quite impressive compared to Earth humans – we didn't have to stop at all, and nobody is too out of breath to speak. I guess Alara was right about it not being such a big deal.
Looking around, I can see that the hot spring is doing well. The public section of the hot spring is comfortably packed with people, and they all seem to be having a good time.
To my surprise, a fraction of the women are wearing what look like strapless bikini tops, seemingly made from fine leather. It doesn't look like they're in the majority, but that doesn't make it less surprising. Since this world is basically like the dark ages plus magic, I wasn't expecting anything resembling swimsuits.
I was worried about if I should have divided it into gendered spaces with privacy barriers. However, there isn't much of a visitor bias towards men there, and everyone seems to be respecting segregated groups of women and men towards the back. Between that and the swimsuits, I think it's fine.
It looks like all but a couple of the private jacuzzi are occupied. From what I recall, the fee is five copper per person for general entry, and then jacuzzi are three silvers extra. However, the latter hold six people spaciously or up to ten, and the cost can be split, so it's not that bad if you have companions.
"Lady Alara…what are those stone rings with the black domes over them?" (Cara)
"Excellent question, Lady Cara. Those are called jacuzzi, and they let you sit and enjoy the hot spring in privacy!" (Alara)
Cara returns a puzzled expression.
"Doesn't that ruin the point of being at a hot spring? You'd be in the dark with nothing to look at, and unable to feel the open air." (Cara)
Cara seems to be echoing the concerns of other invited guests, and there's a murmur of assent. Alara gives a confident smile and shakes her head.
"Not in this case. The jacuzzi is an enchanted item that only prevents people from seeing into it. If you're sitting inside of it, you wouldn't even know that the black dome is there! You'd see normally and even feel the breeze of the mountain air." (Alara)
There's a round of surprised noises from the guests. I feel Cara's arm tighten around me for a third time, and she slowly turns to glare at me. After a moment, she whispers…
"Let me guess…" (Cara)
I just play innocent and look as confused as she is. She…doesn't buy it. Ulta finally speaks up in response to Alara's claim – she reminds me of Helena when Nina offered to demonstrate the lie detector spell.
"Fufufu…well, that has got to be the most absurd magic I've ever heard of. On top of that, you're claiming that it's enchanted, but the enchantment doesn't only affect the item, so it's doubly absurd. I expect to see this claim verified." (Ulta)
Alara smirks at Ulta.
"Well, Miss Ulta, you can try walking over to one of the black domes and asking the people inside to describe what you're wearing. Alternatively, feel free to treat all the men here to a show and climb in one of the empty jacuzzi yourself." (Alara)
Did she really just say that!? I glance fearfully between the two of them, but Ulta just gives Alara a smirk right back.
"Thanks, I think I will. You don't think I knowingly came to a hot spring unprepared, do you?" (Ulta)
Without wasting another second, Ulta slides the dress she's wearing down her body to her feet and steps out of it. She's wearing the bikini-like attire I noticed on some of the other elves. Hers is made of very fine-looking black leather.
Ulta is sporting a confident smile, and I don't blame her. American public school would be a brutal place for any son of Ulta.
"So, that's why you ignored my advances – you're into older women?" (Cara)
Cara whispers this to me with a smirk on her face – I guess she saw me looking at Ulta. Oh, she thinks she's funny, huh? I could tell her it was just because I was surprised by the bikinis, but that's not as fun.
I smirk back.
"If that were the case, wouldn't I have jumped at my chance with you? You're probably triple Ulta's age, right?" (Mizuki)
All traces of amusement leave Cara's face, and her eyes narrow at me dangerously.
"I'll pretend I didn't hear that, for your sake. I considered you a smart man, Mizuki, so I'd rather not have to lower my opinion of you." (Cara)
"Fufufu…I'm very flattered that you think I'm smart. I do think you're beautiful, by the way, I just assumed you hear it enough that me saying it would bother you. Also, I very much enjoy your company, so I didn't want to complicate our relationship. That's all." (Mizuki)
Cara's eyes go wide in surprise over my sudden change in tactics, and she becomes flustered. That's very unlike her…I fight the urge to laugh at her girlish reaction. After a moment, she seems to recover and eyes me suspiciously.
"Quit trying to throw me off with your empty flattery, Mizuki. It's not going to save you." (Cara)
I give her an amused smile.
"Just so you know, I consider us whispering like this to be a private conversation. That means our deal is in effect. Since empty flattery is basically lying, I can assure you that I meant every word of what I said." (Mizuki)
Cara maintains her suspicion momentarily while studying my face. I just wait patiently with an earnest expression, and eventually she smiles at me in amusement.
"Well, I'm happy to hear that. I don't think sharing my bed with you occasionally is too complicated, though. Offer is still available if you're interested?" (Cara)
This again? I sigh deeply. Giving the same answer again wouldn't be very much fun though. I glance to Cara, and she's eyeing me expectantly.
I smile at her in amusement.
"Sure, that sounds nice. Are you free tonight?" (Mizuki)
Cara's eyes go wide in shock, and I see color rush to her cheeks. She stares at me dumbfounded for a moment without responding. I knew it…that sneaky elf. I smirk at her and continue.
"Well look at that, not the answer you expected, hmm? So, why don't you tell me what you're really after? That's probably easier than trying to seduce me." (Mizuki)
Cara's expression rapidly turns bitter.
"Tch…that was extremely rude of you, Mizuki. While my offer wasn't out of something as naïve as love, I'm still interested in you. I admit that I hoped it would make you and your Lady more attached to my territory and this kingdom, but I wouldn't sleep with you over that alone. You're good company and appealing otherwise." (Cara)
Well…that's actually…shit, I might have been an asshole. Still, it's not like I'm being entirely unreasonable either.
"What if I told you that could be the case without you sleeping with me? I'm happy to be friends if we both put in the effort to show that we're trustworthy." (Mizuki)
Cara looks at me in surprise.
"I'd be very interested in that. Have I not been trustworthy?" (Cara)
"You haven't been untrustworthy, but no, I wouldn't say that I can trust you either. So far, you haven't taken a single action towards me or my Lady that wasn't motivated primarily by how it benefits you. By contrast, I made our deal to never lie to you even though it only inconvenienced me – it was done purely for your benefit." (Mizuki)
Cara's expression quickly changes, and it seems…pained? Guilty? She becomes thoughtful and doesn't speak for several minutes. Before she gets the chance, a commotion snaps my attention back to Alara and the guests.
Ulta is climbing out of a black-domed jacuzzi with a huge smile on her face, and she is dripping wet. Oh right, I kind of got distracted, but she was going to test out a jacuzzi. She walks over to the women's changing room to grab a towel, then walks towards us while still grinning. Arriving in front of us, she continues to dry off her body and hair.
"Remarkable, Lady Alara! Fufufu…I saw the little mirror to prove that it was working, but I wasn't sure until I tested it myself. It works exactly how you said, and the water felt amazing! Where can I commission one of these enchantments?" (Ulta)
Alara just shakes her head in exasperation.
"Nowhere, Miss Ulta. They were a gift from Lady Nedonera, and they can only be found here." (Alara)
Ulta gives a bewildered look to Alara, then shifts her focus to me.
"Mizuki, perhaps as gratitude for my little showing, you can explain that to me. I know that Elder Dragons are powerful, don't need incantations, and have other strange abilities, but I thought all their actual spells were related in some way to their named element? What does this strange privacy barrier have to do with earth? Also, setting that aside, why is Lady Nedonera giving such generous gifts only to Lady Alara?" (Ulta)
Those are…fair questions. Why is she the first person to bother asking? I guess it's because everyone else has 'watched' Nina perform non-earth spells, so there was no reason to question it. Until Nina's Dragon Bond with me, Ulta would have been correct.
"You're normally correct, Miss Ulta. All I can tell you is that my Lady managed to expand her abilities beyond that limitation. Even among the Elder Dragons, she is truly exceptional – probably the strongest of them all. As for why she's helping Lady Alara…Lady Alara extended her aid to us without obligation, even though it inconvenienced her. I felt that friendliness deserved reciprocity, so here we are." (Mizuki)
I hear Cara mumbling…
"So, that's the difference…" (Cara)
Meanwhile, Alara smiles gratefully at me, and all the guests turn to me in shock. Ulta seemingly voices the reason for their confusion.
"Mizuki, the other part is absurd as well, but are you saying Lady Nedonera did something because you told her to!?" (Ulta)
Uh oh…I should have been more careful about my wording. I shake my head.
"Of course not, I miscommunicated that. She allows me to speak freely around her, and I merely voiced an opinion. When she heard the opinion, she found it agreeable, and made the decision herself. Obviously, an Elder Dragon would never take actual orders from someone as weak as myself." (Mizuki)
Everyone seems to calm down some, but Ulta keeps eyeing me skeptically. I decide to change the subject. I smile at Ulta earnestly.
"So, Miss Ulta, was the answer to your question interesting enough payback for your 'little showing', as you put it?" (Mizuki)
Ulta snorts.
"Yeah, I'd say so. I'd have even let you join me in the jacuzzi if I'd known beforehand." (Ulta)
I shake my head in exasperation.
"Lady Alara, where to next?" (Mizuki)
Alara smirks at my discomfort, then begins leading our group back down the mountain. I glance at the unusually silent Cara just ahead of me, who let go of my arm earlier, and see that she's once again hugging the side of the stairs away from the edge. She looks terrified.
I quicken my pace slightly, and I loop my arm through hers. She looks at me in bewilderment, and I just return a warm smile to her. After a moment, she smiles back at me, but it seems forced and tinged with sadness. What is her deal? I speak to her in a low voice.
"I don't know why you look so glum, Cara, but is there anything I can do to help?" (Mizuki)
To my surprise, Cara's face twists into frustration. What the hell!? She looks back towards me and sees my bewildered expression, and her face immediately softens.
"I-I'm sorry, it's not you, Mizuki. I've just been thinking about what you said. You're right…I've been helpful, and friendly, but that's not the same thing as being trustworthy. I've acted as though every interaction with you is just a conduit for my benefit. In a way, that's like when people just gawk at me during empty conversation, and I hate making that comparison." (Cara)
Wow…that might be unnecessarily harsh towards herself. The last part, at least.
"Well, I think you're being a little unfair. Like I said, I enjoy your company, and I don't think there is anything wrong with putting yourself or your people first. Especially when you're still helping a human outsider who you don't owe anything. So, maybe cut yourself some slack, for me?" (Mizuki)
Cara stares at me dumbfounded for several minutes before responding. To my surprise, she outright changes the subject.
"Mizuki…I'd like to stay here in Eden a few more days. If you'll be available, I want to get to know one another better during that time. Could we do that?" (Cara)
Cara is looking at me with a mix of determination and hopefulness. I smile back at her warmly.
"I have people and projects I have to help with, so I can't constantly escort you, but getting to know one another better sounds nice. You're welcome to accompany me wherever you want, and I'll let you know if there are exceptions." (Mizuki)
Cara smiles with relief.
"That would be perfect. Uhm…also, could I stay in a guest room in that mansion? I'm sure the inn itself is fine, but…all those people…the small rooms…" (Cara)
Oh, this poor, pampered noble. How would she ever survive such a hardship?
[Hey, Nina! I hope the hunting trip is going well! Quick question – it turns out that Cara, that redheaded elf noble, showed up to tour Eden. She has asked to stay with us in the mansion for a few days. Is that okay with you?] (Mizuki)
I sense excitement from Nina through our connection.
[Mizuki, it is going well! I have already claimed the lives of four orcs! Fufufu…at this rate, I will not have to wait much longer for this game of pool! Fufufu… prepare to spoil me for my hard work when I get home. Oh, and I don't mind if the fire-colored elf stays with us.] (Nina)
[Great! I'm looking forward to tonight. Oh, with Cara here we'll have to be more subtle, though. Me sharing a room or a bath with my master would raise eyebrows.] (Mizuki)
[That is fine, you can teleport us somewhere private for any of those things. Oh! I see another orc, I must go!] (Nina)
Well, she's rather nonchalant. Cara is giving me a puzzled look, probably because I've been staring into space for over a minute.
"Ehem…sure, we can accommodate a pampered noble. Happy to have you!" (Mizuki)
Cara's face contorts with annoyance at my phrasing, but she squeezes my arm appreciatively. After that, we make our way down the mountain in comfortable silence, admiring the view of the valley.
