Several hours later, my party and I, along with the nobles and royal family, are standing just outside the palace in the main square. The royal guard is forming a protective circle around us, and we are facing out into a seemingly endless sea of elves. The public announcement about resolving the demon crisis is about to begin.
Elira steps forward, and she raises a small metal donut to her mouth. I'm guessing it's some kind of magic microphone. My suspicion is shortly confirmed.
"I, Queen Elira Ophelle, am happy to welcome you all to the royal palace! To those of you who traveled from afar for the royal announcement, thank you, and welcome to Avalon as well!" (Elira)
Elira pauses for a moment as cheers ring out from the crowd, then continues.
"We will start the reception for the royal announcement soon, and we'll begin allowing guests into the palace thereafter! However, we have an important statement to make to you all beforehand! This statement is not the main subject of the royal announcement, but it's important nonetheless! Rest assured, the matter has already been discussed amongst the royal and noble families!" (Elira)
As Elira pauses again, excited murmurs ripple across the crowd.
"As many of you are aware, we've been facing the threat of a demon invasion these past few months, and we even had reason to believe that Veyron the Elder Dragon would be joining the invasion force!" (Elira)
The crowds murmuring becomes more frantic.
"However! Princess Ilina was able to secure the aid of Nedonera the Elder Dragon! Lady Nedonera and her party have been welcomed as royal guests in the palace these past couple weeks, and some of you may even have seen them around the city recently! They stand next to me now, with Lady Nedonera graciously taking a human form for our convenience!" (Elira)
Elira steps to the side, and gestures at the four of us in a line, and to Ilina near us. The crowd erupts with several surprised yells, and then it transitions to excited discussion. Many people can be heard shouting Ilina's name reverently, and some can be heard shouting a variation of 'Great Dragon'. I think I also hear my name said once or twice in surprise, but it's hard to tell.
"My fellow elves! I'm pleased to finally announce that, several days ago, Lady Nedonera and her party traveled to the minor continent alone, singlehandedly defeated Veyron in combat, and resolved the threat of an invasion by the demons! Peace once again hangs over the Elven Kingdom and its people!" (Elira)
At this point, the crowd loses all sense of control, and erupts in excited shouts. After a few moments, chants of Nina's name begin to envelop the crowd, until it's all that's left. I direct a thought message at our party.
[Uh oh Nina, it looks like you might be quite popular throughout this reception. I hope you're ready to be constantly swarmed by elven admirers!] (Mizuki)
I hear Zara snort next to me.
[Fufufu…I don't know, I think I could get used to this kind of praise, Mizuki.] (Nina)
[Well, if you say so. Just don't go dropping bodies during the reception when you get tired of all the attention.] (Mizuki)
[Your fears are unfounded, Mizuki, I wouldn't kill my loyal fans.] (Nina)
God…we're losing her to the fame already. I chuckle to myself quietly. Elira raises her hand to silence the crowd, then continues.
"I'm happy to hear that you all share my gratitude towards Lady Nedonera and her party! That is why, as a token of our appreciation, Lady Nedonera and the members of her party will now each be awarded a special royal crest that allows them to visit our country freely in the future! I hope that you all will aid me in welcoming them in our country as the heroes that they are!" (Elira)
The crowd erupts in generally positive shouts and applause break out. Elira makes a gesture towards Ilina, and she approaches us with a box and hands it to Elira. She opens the box and produces a small necklace with a silver shield on it. The shield seems to have a bird emblem etched on it – I assume it's the Ophelle crest.
"First, allow me to introduce Lady Nedonera, of the Elder Dragons!" (Elira)
Elira places the necklace over Nina's head and steps away. Then, the crowd erupts into thunderous applause, and the name chanting starts again. Elira grabs the next necklace and moves on to Zara.
"Next, allow me to introduce Zara, of the wolf-kin!" (Elira)
The same ritual ensues, and the crowd breaks out in relatively light applause. Zara doesn't seem to mind. Elira approaches me with a nervous look. Yeah, I don't blame her…I'm next.
"Third, allow me to introduce Mizuki, of the humans!" (Elira)
Before Elira can place the necklace on me, intense murmuring breaks out in the crowd at the mention of my race. After she places the necklace over my head, however, I hear forceful applause scattered in the crowd. I guess my trips around the city weren't for nothing.
Though it's much less enthusiastic than even Zara, light applause eventually spread across the crowd. Elira looks relieved, and she moves on.
"Finally, allow me to introduce Alto, of the elves!" (Elira)
Following Elira's necklace ritual, applause almost as enthusiastic as for Nina break out from the crowd, and I even hear some people start to chant her name. I can't help but grin and glance towards her, but she only seems to be wearing a sad smile.
[Hey, Alto, if that gloomy face of yours has something to do with me, you should cut it out. I'm very happy for my friend right now, and I don't want you spoiling my mood.] (Mizuki)
I see Alto's eyes light up a little more, and her face transitions to a smirk as she glances at me. Good, my work here is done.
Elira makes her way back in front of us to address the crowd.
"Now, I have a few final comments before the reception! First, Mizuki's crest award does not signal a change in our general policy on human travelers. He is an exception condoned by the nobles and royal family. Second, Mizuki himself advocated for upholding our general policy on human travelers. Finally, he and all other crest recipients will be attending the reception, and they've agreed to speak with you all freely! I ask that you all treat them with civility, and that you take the opportunity to know them better! That's all!" (Elira)
With that closing statement, the reception is finally under way.
¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
My party and I are led into a hysterically large high-ceilinged room – the master ballroom for the reception. Several roaming maids hand us wine glasses, and they offer us snacks. I accepted the wine, so I have something to do with my hands.
Before we have a chance to talk with one another too much, or to be approached by the nobles, elves start flooding into the room. The room is quickly bustling with activity, and our party gets separated.
Nina is overrun with common elves wanting to talk to her, but they keep a respectful distance and wear nervous expressions. Alto faces a similar fate, but they are less respectful of her boundaries. Being separated from me, I see her expression grow concerned.
[Fufufu…sorry, Alto, that's the price of fame! Please try not to worry about me. If it helps, consider your influence a way to make people less afraid of me. That's really the goal of tonight. You don't need to babysit me, I'll be fine.] (Mizuki)
Hearing my thought message, Alto's face relaxes slightly, and she turns her attention to the crowd around her.
I distance myself from Nina's and Alto's fans, and I see Zara walking up to me. She's wearing a flowy black dress, and she doesn't seem particularly pleased. I smirk at her.
"Hey there, Zara, why the sad face? Is it because they made you wear a dress? I think it suits you if that helps." (Mizuki)
Zara gives me a confused expression after looking down at the dress.
"No? I like dresses, and I agree that this one suits me." (Zara)
Oh…that's surprising. I guess I let my biased impression of her as a tomboy get the best of me.
"Oh, my apologies, it seems I misjudged you. So, what's bothering you then?" (Mizuki)
"Tch…these elves. Their reception of you baffles me. You're the person they should probably show the most gratitude and respect towards, but it's the opposite. If you were a guest in my village this would never happen. Why bother trying to be accepted here?" (Zara)
"Fufufu…don't you already know? Ilina is my potential wife, Alto is my dear friend, and they'd both be happy if the elves accepted me. I'm doing it for them. I'll make sure to visit your village again soon and we can test that theory of how they'd treat me. When that happens, I'll be just as invested in having them accept me, but it will be because of you. That's just how much I cherish my friends." (Mizuki)
Zara smiles briefly, then becomes thoughtful. I begin walking through the ballroom with her aimlessly and looking around the crowd. I've always enjoyed people watching.
After the better part of an hour, I see an elderly elven man walking towards me quickly, and he's wearing a smirk. My eyes widen in surprise.
"Kudra!? Shouldn't you be out there raking in all this business!?" (Mizuki)
Kudra flashes me a knowing smile and shakes his head.
"Fufufu…that's a novice's business attitude. There is plenty of time and customers, but finite product. If I save mine till a bit later, supplies will drop, and I can charge more. All that aside, this was the raffle position I drew, and there's no way I'm passing up an opportunity to see the inside of the palace. These events are rare, you know, and don't always include a public reception. Are you responsible?" (Kudra)
Kudra looks like an unassuming seller of baked goods, but he's got a ruthless side. I bet he was a real shark in the business world when he was younger.
"Well…I suppose I might be, but only indirectly. Would that bother you?" (Mizuki)
"Not at all, I'm grateful for the opportunity! Besides, who do you think scrounged together all those applause for you earlier? I'd hate to lose my best source of business because these young elves can't stop gossiping!" (Kudra)
"Fufufufufu…I wondered if that might have been the case. Well, regardless of your motivations, I want to thank you for trying to make my presence here more tolerable. It means a lot. By the way, this is my friend Zara! I don't believe that you two have met." (Mizuki)
Zara gives a light nod to Kudra and eyes him up and down with a curious expression. Kudra gives a polite nod back and smiles patiently.
"It's nice to meet you, Zara. I doubt an old elf and baker is of much interest to a wolf-kin, but please feel free to stop by my shop and chat nonetheless." (Kudra)
"Fufufu…that's an oversight by my people that I hope to change. We need to learn to respect things like baking more, and I have respect for any elf that knows the value of Mizuki's presence here. I think you'll be of plenty interest to me, and it's nice to meet you as well, Kudra. I'll make sure to visit your shop another time." (Zara)
Kudra gives a surprised smile to Zara that transitions to amusement. He nods towards her appreciatively, then he turns his attention back to me. His expression becomes more serious.
"Mizuki, while I have you here…you told me the thing I needed to be worried about most for my people was the outcome of this royal announcement. Specifically, the kinds of decisions we elves made. I know that it's early, but do you have any other news you can share with me about that? How are the winds blowing for my people?" (Kudra)
"Actually, I've been pleasantly surprised by those developments. I can't tell you specifics, yet, but suffice it to say that there are no harbingers of doom. No promises, but I even see some indications that your people might fare better than I could have predicted." (Mizuki)
Kudra breathes a heavy sigh of relief and smiles at me.
"Thanks for setting an old man's mind at ease, Mizuki. I feel like a hundred years have been added to my life. I hope that continues to be the case, and I wish you luck in your efforts towards that end." (Kudra)
Kudra suddenly looks down at his wrist, and I notice a bracelet glowing red periodically.
"Tch…well that means my time is up, so I best be going. Zara, Mizuki, I'll see you around!" (Kudra)
With that, Kudra takes off into the crowd. As I watch him leave, I hear another voice speak behind me.
"Well, well…Kudra likes you, huh? That makes me even more convinced that my instincts were correct."
I turn around in surprise to identify the voice, and I'm greeted by a young, beautiful elf with dark red hair and amber eyes, wearing a red dress – Cara Egris. I smile at her in amusement and give a deep bow.
"Lady Cara, it's a pleasure to meet you again. You honor me with…" (Mizuki)
Before I can finish, however, she cuts me off with an annoyed expression and dismissive gesture.
"Mizuki, save that shameless flattery for Tessa and Jorah. I think you know that it's not getting you anywhere with me, and somehow it just feels like I'm being teased. Also, just call me Cara unless we're in a meeting with other nobles." (Cara)
Teasing? Me? Never. This almost feels like she doesn't want to keep up our little game. She was a lot more fun earlier. I direct a shrug at her and smirk.
"Fufufu…have it your way, Cara. Obviously, I deny on record that I was teasing you. That aside, what can I do for you?" (Mizuki)
Cara grins in response to my behavior change.
"Oh, can I assume that this is the real Mizuki? If so, you're a lot more fun this way. As for what you can do for me…" (Cara)
Cara walks up beside me and loops her arm through mine, like she's my date to prom. Then, she begins leading me through the crowd as we talk. Zara looks surprised and quickly moves to my other side to accompany us.
"…we'll get to that. For now, why don't you introduce me to your friend here? Can I assume that you're the wolf-kin girl with enough sword skills to beat a demon general in single combat? I was curious about you." (Cara)
"That sounds accurate. My name is Zara. Who are you?" (Zara)
"Nice to meet you Zara, my name is Cara Egris. I'm one of the nobles that Mizuki met with earlier. The others gave him quite the interrogation, you know? You missed an interesting meeting." (Cara)
"Fufu…every meeting with Mizuki is interesting. I have no regrets about missing this one, though." (Zara)
Cara stares at Zara curiously for a moment, while Zara just keeps looking straight ahead with a disinterested expression.
"So, I was curious why you joined Mizuki's party, Zara?" (Cara)
My party? Is she trying to bait her? Trap her? Zara's face doesn't falter however, and she responds evenly. She's getting better at these situations.
"I prefer direct questions, Lady Cara. I'm sure you're aware that the party is Lady Nedonera's, not Mizuki's, and I don't know what the goal of such a trick question would be. If you're wondering where my loyalty lies, it's with Mizuki, same as Alto." (Zara)
Cara raises an eyebrow at Zara, then glances at me curiously.
"Very well, I apologize for the underhanded question. May I ask why your loyalty is towards Mizuki and not Lady Nedonera? Wolf-kin gravitate towards strength. I understand that Mizuki can't use magic, and while I'm sure that is very misleading of his capabilities, he can't be remotely in the same class as Lady Nedonera." (Cara)
Zara smiles wryly. Yeah, finding that funny is in character for her.
"You're correct, the difference in their strengths is laughable. However, as I'm sure Mizuki mentioned, I think that wolf-kin world views will drive us to extinction if we don't change. On the average, we're stronger than elves, but as a people we're incalculably weaker. So, the solution isn't traditional strength, like Lady Nedonera personifies, but in new ideas and practices. I believe that Mizuki is the best source of such things, so I joined him, and I've learned much in the short time since." (Zara)
Cara is staring at Zara like she just found a rare animal, thought to be extinct.
"Zara, you may be interested to know that, towards the end of our meeting with Mizuki, I advised the other nobles to give you all a large amount of undeveloped land in the Elven Kingdom, and to welcome you as independent residents. This was in addition to the travel crests, S-rank guild recommendations, and money. I did it because I was instinctively convinced it was necessary. Why do you think that is?" (Cara)
Zara pauses for a moment and looks at Cara in surprise. Then, she resumes walking and responds to Cara with a smirk.
"Well, I think it's because you're by far the smartest elf I've met since joining Mizuki in this country." (Zara)
Cara narrows her eyes at Zara nervously.
"Oh? I didn't get the impression that he personally cared whether my advice was heeded, nor do I think Lady Nedonera cared." (Cara)
Zara just shakes her head in amusement. Seeing this, Cara sighs regretfully and seems to accept that her conversation with Zara has reached a dead end.
"Mizuki, you attract the most interesting people. Regarding why I first approached you…I was hoping I could help you, and we could be friends, of sorts." (Cara)
Friends? Yeah, I doubt it.
"Fufufu…you've been the most frequent source of surprises here, Cara. How would you be helping me, and what do you consider us being friends to entail? You should probably just be more transactional with your proposal, instead of pretending that a meaningful bond between us is your goal." (Mizuki)
"Words hurt, Mizuki, but very well. I'd like to help you improve your reputation within our kingdom as much as possible in the next few days – that seems to be the primary thing preventing Lady Nedonera's party from being here more permanently. If the worst comes to pass, and those royal crests are the limit of your access to our country, I hope you'll consider an alternative offer from me directly. That consideration is what I ask in return for my help now." (Cara)
Alternative offer? What's that about? Cara is eyeing me expectantly.
"Could you elaborate?" (Mizuki)
"Hmm…your royal crests allow you to exist anywhere within our borders as long as you want, and to purchase services and goods, but they don't grant you full elven rights or allow you to own property. However, if a certain noble were to discreetly build a secluded guest house somewhere in their territory, and be indefinitely hospitable to you, that would be like living here without any policy violations. What do you think of that, Mizuki?" (Cara)
That sneaky elf…that's a loophole! Why didn't I think of it!? Wait…had Elira already thought of this?
"Hmm…that's very interesting. Out of curiosity, what's to stop the royal family from expoiting such a technicality?" (Mizuki)
"The royal family does not technically own property outside the palace, and them keeping guests indefinitely would raise eyebrows. However, a noble indefinitely hosting guests outside their family home, even if it becomes public knowledge, would not ruffle nearly as many feathers." (Cara)
She's clever…I guess she surmised what I was thinking. Her answers don't sound untruthful, though.
"Alright, Cara, you've made your point. I won't promise a decision, but I pledge to discuss this hypothetical situation with Lady Nedonera. I'm quite fond of loopholes, after all." (Mizuki)
Cara looks over and gives me a smug smile.
"Wonderful! That's all I ask. Now, let's start introducing you to people as my friendly acquaintance." (Cara)
"Fufufu…I suppose we're friendly enough, but are you sure you're well-liked enough? Your reputation might take a hit, after all." (Mizuki)
Cara narrows her eyes at me seriously.
"I'll have you know that I'm quite popular among the elves, to an annoying degree. If keeping your company lessens that attention, I welcome it. If it would slow the onslaught of suitors, they can even think you're my lover for all I care." (Cara)
Ahh…is this about her red hair and eyes? I'm not even sure that I've seen a human with them here, on reflection, and it's definitely out of place among the elves. Redheads weren't nearly so exotic on Earth, though.
"Could I wager a guess that, because of your hair and eyes, you're treated like a rare bird. You don't like the attention because it feels hollow, like they're just admiring you as a curiosity?" (Mizuki)
Cara's expression shifts to one of surprise, then annoyance.
"Yes…it's pretty much as you say. My features are exceedingly rare among the elves, or even the humans from what I understand. I have a very long life ahead of me, and the attention is already grating. Although…you don't seem particularly interested in my appearance…why is that?" (Cara)
"Hmm…let's just say, your appearance is nothing particularly novel to me. Your personality on the other hand…that's far more intriguing." (Mizuki)
Cara snorts, and her tone becomes heavy with sarcasm.
"My, you're quite the flatterer, Mizuki. Do women everywhere know of your charm?" (Cara)
"Sadly, no, I only share it with friendly acquaintances." (Mizuki)
I make sure to infuse sarcasm as I tease her for her characterization of our relationship. Cara rolls her eyes, but I see the trace of a smile on her face.
We transition into a comfortable silence, and Cara begins leading me around the ballroom to meet with various elves.
¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
Alara Ophelle is currently standing in the ballroom near Ilina and Elira, trying to enjoy the reception. Overall, her state is best described as one of anxious optimism. She is completely fixated on making it through the next few days without incident, at which point she can relax and start her life over as a noble.
Alara held quite different inclinations for most of the time after she lost her wager with Ilina, along with her royal status and claim to the throne. This royal announcement was to be where she could lay the groundwork for her revenge.
She intended to make sure that Mizuki was scorned by every elf she could, and form connections to aid her in excising his presence from their kingdom after she became a noble.
Initially, she saw him as nothing more than a weakling grasping above his station, one with a modicum of wit that hid behind powerful allies and schemes. While she considered him a disgrace, and his influence over the Elder Dragon dangerous, she didn't consider the man himself any real threat.
Despite Elira's concern that Lady Nedonera would retaliate if Mizuki were to be harmed mysteriously, Alara disagreed. After all, Lady Nedonera condoned his deathmatch with Alara – a practical execution in her mind.
It was all this in mind that Alara had plotted against Mizuki, feeling sure that he'd be easily dealt with if separated from the Elder Dragon, and that she could avoid retaliation.
All those ambitions were shattered a couple of days ago, when she saw Mizuki for what he truly was. She'd been foolish, in retrospect, by brazenly declaring to him the depths of her resolve to see him ruined.
He'd initially responded to her declaration with his typical nonchalant attitude, and a chipper tone that seemed unnervingly friendly to Alara.
However, the situation changed rapidly, and faster than Alara could react, Mizuki had suddenly dealt a blow that sent waves of pain through her body, and she crumpled to the floor. Lying there, looking up at Mizuki, she'd made an unsettling observation.
The Mizuki standing over her had his typical cool demeanor and polite smile, but his eyes were different. For the first time, she'd seen real anger in them, and it terrified her. However, her overall assessment of his threat level hadn't changed. While his anger and physical abilities had surprised her, she still felt that his lack of magic made him no direct threat.
This confidence was shaken when she'd felt any remaining strength sapped from her body, and Mizuki declared that he'd permanently stolen her ability to use magic. Alara found the assertion ludicrous – the ability to block or even significantly alter someone's fundamental magic abilities was a task deemed impossible by the best elven scholars.
However, for an excruciating time she had tried in vain to use any kind of magic. As Mizuki calmly watched her try to murder him, she was forced to accept the truth.
Despair had washed over Alara at the thought of what her life would be like without magic. She also realized that she'd severely underestimated Mizuki – he was a monster to be antagonized at one's peril.
As her despair reached totality, and she waited for death at his hands, she was surprised to feel strength flood into her body and the pain of her injuries recede. As she'd looked to her would-be executioner, she saw him smiling without the initial anger in his eyes.
At Mizuki's behest, Alara confirmed his renewal of her ability to use magic, and the healing of her injuries, and she was dumbfounded. He'd brought her to a valley of pain and helplessness in an instant, then erased all traces of the encounter just as quickly.
This whiplash in her circumstances struck absolute terror in Alara. To her, Mizuki was no longer a monster, he was a chaotic god that rewrote the laws of magic on a whim, and she trembled at the thought of ever earning his ire again. Power like that is second only to Elder Dragons, she thought.
She realized soon after that he could have stopped her mistreatment of him at any point. His punishment of her went uncontested by the royal family, so she also knew that his prior tolerance wasn't necessary.
Likely, it was out of deference to his master, Ilina, or his elven companion. However, she'd obviously exhausted that borrowed tolerance, and she'd feared what new course her life might take as a result.
When he offered Alara the chance to forego her meddling in their affairs, and to simply live her life comfortably as a noble, she was eager for the opportunity – she'd already dispelled any fantasies about revenge. Mizuki's unnecessary offer, despite all her hostility towards him, was the final trigger in altering Alara's perception of him.
Reflecting on their history now, as the reception festivities swirl around her, Alara is sure of his true nature. While his tolerant personality and hidden strength make him appear like someone easy to exploit, there are few beings more dangerous to provoke.
She considers him fundamentally agreeable, so she plans to keep her limited exchanges with him earnest and respectful. If she does that, and plays her role in cementing Ilina's succession, she's sure that she'll prosper.
Noticing that Elira and Ilina are inundated with numerous common elves wishing to meet them, Alara slips away quietly.
Thankfully, her classist views on commoners make most of them unenthusiastic about meeting her, so she is largely left alone as she roams the ballroom. She grabs a glass of wine and sips it appreciatively. She's resolved to just enjoy these little pleasures quietly for the next few days.
Just as Alara is beginning to relax, she sees a person with long silver hair weaving through the crowd, and they appear to be heading towards her. As they arrive in front of Alara, she notices that it's Tessa Uril. Historically, the two have gotten along well, due to their similar world views, so Alara smiles at her warmly.
"Hello, Tessa, it's been quite some time! Are you enjoying the festivities? Personally, I was just beginning to appreciate this wine." (Alara)
Tessa smiles politely at Alara, but it seems forced. Alara senses concern from Tessa, and it makes her feel uneasy.
"Good evening, Alara. As you know, I've never been particularly fond of spending hours entertaining the commoners' curiosity. Hopefully you subject me to less of these when you're Queen. I think the reception is quite lovely otherwise." (Tessa)
Alara just nods politely. The nobles aren't supposed to learn of her circumstances until tomorrow, and she has no intention of derailing such important plans now that she's on semi-neutral terms with Mizuki. After a brief silence, Tessa's discomfort becomes more apparent.
"Alara, I'm sure you're aware that the nobles had a meeting with Queen Elira this morning, and we discussed how this issue with the demons was resolved by the Elder Dragon's party. They also attended this meeting, and we decided on their reward, which you heard about in the public statement before this." (Tessa)
Tessa pauses and looks at Alara expectantly, as if waiting for confirmation. Alara remembers the event well – this evening was the first she'd heard about the situation in its entirety, or the fact that Mizuki and his group would be allowed to roam the country freely.
While his access to the country makes her nervous, this is tempered by his decision to solve their issue with Veyron and the demons, and to advocate against human travelers in the country. His actions suggest to her a general desire to protect the Elven Kingdom.
While Alara is somewhat selfish, and considers herself the better of commoner elves, she still has a strong love for the elven people. She just feels that the appropriate expression of that love is for the commoners to revere and obey those like her with status and power, and for her to make sure the kingdom is protected and prosperous.
This was, in part, why she so vehemently opposed Mizuki. However, it's also why Mizuki's recent actions make her more comfortable with his presence in the kingdom.
"Alara?" (Tessa)
Alara is jolted from her reflection.
"I was lost in thought, sorry. Yes, I'm aware of the meeting and the decisions that stemmed from it. What of it?" (Alara)
"I'm deeply troubled by that human, Mizuki, and his ongoing presence in the kingdom. Some of the other nobles suggested offering elven land to Lady Nedonera and her party, him included! Can you believe such a ludicrous thing!? What's more, they want to hold another meeting after the royal announcement to seriously discuss doing it!" (Tessa)
Alara can't hide the surprise from her face. She never expected most of the nobles to be so willing to welcome Mizuki into the kingdom. A few days ago, the idea would have made her skin crawl, but it's different now that she thinks he's almost as dangerous as an Elder Dragon.
The dragons may be catastrophically powerful, but they don't form attachments with other races, so they are only a problem if you directly antagonize them. By contrast, Mizuki seems to enjoy the company of others, and can be quite deferential to those he befriends.
If he is rejected by the elves, he is bound to form attachments with other races and countries. They'd likely earn his deference, and that of Lady Nedonera by proxy. If such a country was ever at odds with the Elven Kingdom…Alara shudders at the thought.
The more she considers it, the more she agrees with the other nobles. The best thing for the Elven Kingdom would be to provide Mizuki with as many attachments to their people as possible – their safety would be all but assured, even if he befriended other countries.
Realizing that the nobles, and probably royal family, have already started trying to befriend Mizuki, Alara feels herself start to relax. That is, until…
"Lady Nedonera's deference to him is troubling, and I'm uncomfortable with a human influencing such power – I think it's best if he is removed from our kingdom as quickly as possible. I'm sure you agree, Alara, so I was wondering if you have any suggestions? Naturally, the Elder Dragon's retribution must be avoided." (Tessa)
Her words negate any buzz Alara has from the wine, and she's sobered immediately. If there's one thing Alara knows better than anyone else, it's that trying to make a move like that against Mizuki is pointless at best and suicidal at worst.
If Tessa were only harming herself, Alara would just ignore it, but if she damages Mizuki's relationship with the Elven Kingdom…that could be everyone's problem.
"Tessa, I'm only going to say this once…do not provoke Mizuki. He's reasonable, he's deferential to those that treat him well, and he's only helped the elves. I'm not fond of humans either, but you can just categorize him as an anomaly. If you want my suggestion…apologize to him for any prior disrespect, then offer him your help." (Alara)
Alara narrows her eyes at Tessa as she speaks, and Tessa's face contorts in surprise.
"Alara, what has gotten into you!? Surely you're not suggesting that I try and ingratiate myself to a human!?" (Tessa)
"That's exactly what I'm suggesting. While you're at it, make sure that idiot Jorah avoids any antagonism. As for what's gotten into me…I'm just seeing my goals more clearly these days." (Alara)
Alara waits a few moments, watching Tessa's reaction, but she doesn't say anything – Tessa is stunned silent. Seeing this, Alara simply nods respectfully to her, then leaves Tessa alone to contemplate their discussion.
Alara makes her way through the crowd in the ballroom, scanning the faces around her as she does. She knows what she needs to do, but the thought of it sends shivers down her spine. Still, she grits her teeth and continues with her search.
"I need to talk with Mizuki." (Alara)
¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
I spent over an hour walking in arm with Cara, talking to random elves. They were primarily interested in her, but some of them recognized me and decided to nervously ask questions.
Usually, it was if Queen Elira's statement about me not supporting human tourism in their kingdom was true, but others were curious about Nina. A couple of them even thanked me for helping their country. Overall, it didn't seem like any of them departed with negative feelings towards me – a win in my book.
Between such meetings, we also discussed the nobles' territories in the country. Apparently, the country is divided up like the wedges from an orange, centered around the royal capitol of Avalon.
Cara's domain is the northern wedge, Zardo house the northeastern wedge, Uril house the eastern wedge including the Gelrod's Pass entrance, southeastern wedge the Abel house, and southern wedge the Izthil house. The remaining third of the country on the western side is undeveloped land.
Cara's assertion that she is popular is obviously true – I lost track of the number of elves that approached her while we were together. Moreover, after only an hour, the nature of their interest is beginning to wear on even my nerves.
None of them asked her personal questions, talked about her role as a noble, or asked her opinion on consequential topics, they all just made idle small talk while staring at her glossily. In her shoes, I'd have killed myself or become a shut-in by now.
"Cara, you really have my sympathies. I don't know how you've put up with this your whole life, because these encounters are already driving me to suicide, and I'm only watching them." (Mizuki)
"Fufufu…yes, this is the most bored I've ever been while accompanying Mizuki." (Zara)
Cara sighs deeply and gives me a skeptical look.
"You're not teasing me again, are you, Mizuki?" (Cara)
I hold up my hands innocently and shake my head. Then I direct an empathetic gaze at her.
"No! I mean it, and I'm done teasing you for now. Honestly…can I offer you anything as thanks for putting up with this? It must be something from me, personally, and not something that involves Lady Nedonera. If it's reasonable, I'll grant a favor to show that I appreciate the cost of you helping me." (Mizuki)
Cara's eyes go wide in surprise.
"Just like that – you feel a little bad for me, so you offer me a personal favor on top of what you already promised. You're serious?" (Cara)
I sigh and nod my head.
"Yeah, I'm serious. Believe it or not, I don't like people suffering for my benefit, and these interactions are definitely suffering." (Mizuki)
Cara stares at me for a few moments with a strange expression I can't quite place, then she smiles.
"Very well, I happily accept. If my favor was to have you answer every question I asked you for the rest of the day, thoroughly and honestly, would you grant it?" (Cara)
Wow…straight for the killing blow, eh?
"No, you're too smart for me to grant a favor like that. Naturally, there are things I shouldn't tell you, and I'm sure you'd end up asking all the right questions. Please ask something else of me." (Mizuki)
"Tch…I figured you'd say that. You can't blame a girl for trying. Hmm…in that case, could I get you to promise that you won't outright lie to me going forward? If I can't have all the information I want from you, I'd at least like to know that the information you do tell me is reliable." (Cara)
"Fufufu…that's an ironic request, since my subsequent honesty depends on you already trusting that I'll be honest enough to uphold a promise I make. Unlike a physical favor, you have no way to verify if I'm keeping my promise. Are you sure that's what you want?" (Mizuki)
"Oh yes, very sure. I'm convinced that if you promise me you won't lie, you won't. I don't know why, and I don't think you have an intrinsic issue with lying, but that's what I think." (Cara)
She's spot-on in her assessment of me, and I'm not sure I like that. If she's this aware of my personality after only a day, then I need to be careful about information slip ups around her.
"Alright, so be it. I promise not to lie to you from this point forward, but only in our private conversations. You have my word. Does this make up for all those tedious conversations over the last hour?" (Mizuki)
Cara smiles at me in relief.
"Yes, yes it does. With your promise in mind, I'd like to ask you…can you really not use magic? I'm having a hard time believing that, just like Darak. I'm sure you're not physically weak, but without magic, I'm just not seeing how an Elder Dragon could respect you so much." (Cara)
Hmm…how to respond. If all I have to do is not tell lies, that doesn't prevent truthful but misleading statements. I just have to make it so convincing that she won't press further.
"I promise you, the result I showed Darak on my guild card was from a genuine magic assessment, and I did not tamper with the test or the card. When given the magic class assessment, I placed my hand on the crystal, it glowed white, and then it went dark. There was no second color. I'm even willing to repeat the test in front of you later if you want." (Mizuki)
Cara wears a frustrated expression, and studies me thoughtfully for several moments, then sighs deeply.
"Thanks, I guess I was wrong then. I may take you up on your offer to show me eventually, but I'm in no rush. I'm confident that the result will be exactly as you say." (Cara)
They are way too confident in the interpretation of those tests. I glance at Zara, and I see that she's clearly smiling and shaking her head in amusement. I guess she feels the same way I do.
"I'm glad! It seems we've built some trust then." (Mizuki)
Cara smiles wryly at my remark, and we fall into a comfortable silence. After a few minutes, I see a young silver-haired woman approaching us somewhat frantically – it's Alara.
Crap…I really hope she's not here to cause trouble. It'd be difficult to keep her in check without revealing myself. To my surprise, she stops in front of me and gives a polite curtsy, and her face is a mix of fear and apprehension.
"M-Mizuki, sorry to bother you. I was wondering if I could speak to you privately for a moment. Do you mind, Ca…Lady Cara?" (Alara)
Jeez…a curtsy to me, and she's even using honorifics with Cara? Talk about a clear case of scared straight. I almost feel bad for her. Almost.
Cara seems equally appalled by the display and is glancing between us in bewilderment. I'm also quite curious what Alara could want.
"It's no bother at all, Princess Alara, I'm happy to speak with you. Cara, do you mind giving us a minute? Zara, perhaps you could keep Cara company while we chat." (Mizuki)
[Zara, make sure she doesn't eavesdrop, please. I can always catch you up later.] (Mizuki)
"Of course, I'd like to get to know Lady Cara and the elves better. Lady Cara?" (Zara)
Zara loops her arm through Cara's, and they walk off together. Cara is giving me a desperately curious look over her shoulder as she's dragged off. I cautiously return my attention to Alara…she's looking at me expectantly, and she is visibly nervous.
"Alright, I think this should be private enough. What did you want to discuss, Alara? Also, I understand why you're nervous after our last meeting, but I'm not one to hold a grudge. We came to an agreement, and so long as you honor it, I'm going to be nothing but pleasant to you." (Mizuki)
Relief washes over Alara's face after my statement, and she nods appreciatively.
"Thank you. Uhm…I came to warn you about an issue. Tessa Uril came to see me, and it seems she doesn't intend to accept your presence here. She asked for my assistance in finding a way to remove you from our country without soliciting Lady Nedonera's retaliation – I think she'd even be willing to kill you if she could get away with it." (Alara)
My eyes widen in surprise involuntarily. Tessa's intentions aren't exactly shocking, nor is her attempt to recruit Alara, but I didn't expect Alara to inform me of it so frankly.
"Wow, I'm surprised you're so forthcoming about that, Alara. So long as you didn't say anything negative about me, or disclose my abilities you witnessed, I would have considered your agreement with me upheld. Informing me of her intentions is beyond your obligation, but I appreciate it. I'll think of some way to repay you. What did you say in response to her request?" (Mizuki)
Alara looks surprised by my comment about repaying her, but she says nothing on the subject.
"I told her that you were reasonable, friendly to elves, and she stood nothing to gain by provoking you. I encouraged her to apologize for any prior disrespect, offer you her help openly, and make sure her lackey, Jorah Abel, didn't antagonize you. Then I ended our conversation and left." (Alara)
To say I'm surprised…would be an understatement of cosmic proportions. She really supported me that aggressively, huh? She seems sincere…her expression is currently a mix of apprehension and curiosity, like she's conflicted about asking something.
"Thank you, and I'm again surprised by your unnecessary level of aid to me. Can I ask…you seem conflicted, like you want to ask me something…is that right? If so, I encourage you to do it. I won't react poorly; you have my word." (Mizuki)
Alara's expression is flooded with relief.
"Yes…you're correct. Tessa mentioned that other nobles want to offer you all a permanent place to live in the kingdom. Is that true?" (Alara)
Ahh…that explains why she's so nervous about upsetting me with the question.
"It's true. Can I assume that you'd rather I not have such a permanent presence in the kingdom? I'm sorry to say that, if they were to offer it, I'd probably accept. Your feelings won't change that, but I can promise you that I have no intention of harming the kingdom or innocent elves, no matter how long I'm here. The same goes for you if you remain non-hostile." (Mizuki)
Alara shakes her head and looks at me seriously.
"No, it's the opposite. I'd very much like it if the other nobles were successful, and you were given a permanent residence here. Moreover, is there anything I can do to help facilitate it?" (Alara)
Uhm…what? I stare at her dumbfounded for several moments, and she seems to realize the source of my confusion.
"Yes…I guess that seems like a big change in my attitude, doesn't it? Suffice it to say, learning how powerful you are forced me to reinterpret your actions over the past several weeks, and my opinion of your nature has been updated accordingly. I now think that you having as many attachments as possible to the Elven Kingdom and its people is what's best for our long-term prosperity." (Alara)
I…can't help but burst out laughing, and it draws a few glances our way. I get myself under control, and I notice that Alara is staring at me in confusion.
"Fufufu…I'm sorry for laughing at you Alara, it's just…you surprised me. In a way I think I've misjudged you, too. I thought your elitist attitude and poor treatment of Ilina meant you didn't care about your people, but I see now that you do…in your own way." (Mizuki)
Alara nods solemnly, and I see traces of regret on her face.
"Yes, I…thought of Ilina as lower status than myself, just like common elves. My opinion on how people should treat those of higher status has not changed, but my opinion that Ilina is my lesser has. Still, I've always thought that royals owe the commoners protection and prosperity." (Ilina)
That's twisted, but it's logical within itself, I suppose.
"Hmm…very well. I can't think of any way you can help me put down roots here right now, but if you truly want, I'll reach out to you if such a task for you occurs to me in the future. Moving on…do you know what you plan to do once you become a noble? What will your territory be? Will you take a new last name? How will you establish yourself?" (Mizuki)
Alara looks surprised by the questions.
"Yes, please reach out if I can help. As for my plans…I suspect that I'll be granted a piece of the undeveloped land in the west, and some royal funds to begin developing it. However, even in the fertile areas, it's completely devoid of existing structures, agriculture, mining, or citizens. The royal funds will barely be enough to build a family home, and I'll have no immediate source of income for further development. I haven't even considered what my new family name will be." (Alara)
Alara seems to become somber as she explains her situation. Damn it…I did say I wanted to repay her for being so forthcoming. Nina's not going to be happy about this, though.
I let out an exasperated sigh, and Alara looks at me curiously.
"The family name decision is all on you, but I'll talk to Elira about giving you a specific part of the undeveloped land – one that has a natural resource you can immediately start profiting from. Also, its land should be suitable for agriculture later. I'll help you with quickly building your family home, early development of the area, and I'll supply any extra funds that you need. I'll consider this my way of repaying you for being so helpful to me just now." (Mizuki)
Alara's appears dumbfounded for a solid minute, then she shakes her head in exasperation and her expression turns bitter.
"I can't believe I spent all that time and energy trying to rid my kingdom of you…looking back it all seems so pointless. I did nothing but detriment myself and the elves at every step, for reasons that I can't even make sense of anymore. Even after all that…you'd really…" (Alara)
Alara looks up at me, and I could swear that she looks like she's fighting back tears.
"Mizuki, thank you…I mean it. I know that I don't have much, if any, of your trust, but I promise that I'll never cross you again. You have my genuine respect, and if I can help you in any way, all you have to do is ask." (Alara)
"Uhm…sure thing. Please don't make this awkward, though, excessive gratitude makes me uncomfortable." (Mizuki)
Alara gives me a confused look and shakes her head in exasperation.
"Are you sure you're the same person as the last time we met? I was so terrified of coming to talk to you before that I almost didn't manage it." (Alara)
I shrug and direct an amused smile at her.
"I never wanted your fear, just your cooperation." (Mizuki)
"Well…you have it now. I'm sorry it took so long, but I look forward to working with you in the future, Mizuki." (Alara)
We both share polite smiles, and anticipation for our new working relationship in the newest territory of the Elven Kingdom.
¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
"Mizuki…what the hell was that? You better tell me right now." (Cara)
After my conversation with Alara, I returned to Zara and Cara. Apparently, Zara had her work cut out for her containing Cara's curiosity.
I direct an innocent expression at Cara and respond as though I'm confused.
"Uhm…I was chatting with Princess Alara, wasn't that obvious?" (Mizuki)
"Don't you play dumb with me! She curtsied to you, Mizuki. Curtsied! I've never even seen her do that to the Queen, and her disdain towards humans is well known. What's more, just by me being next to you, she felt compelled to call me Lady Cara. She has never…never…done that, Mizuki. That was practically as ridiculous as Tessa and Jorah fighting over the privilege of massaging your feet!" (Cara)
"Fufufufu…goodness Cara, you certainly have a gift for imagery. Have you considered writing as a hobby?" (Mizuki)
Cara stares at me for a moment, borderline hysterical, then pinches the bridge of her nose and closes her eyes. Eventually, she takes a deep breath and looks at me calmly.
"Do you mind telling me what she wanted to discuss, Mizuki?" (Cara)
"Hmm…I guess that's okay. Mostly, she just wanted to warn me that Tessa Uril is very serious about purging the Elven Kingdom of my presence." (Mizuki)
Cara goes stiff, and she's visibly nervous.
"Okay…what do you plan to do about that?" (Cara)
"If her actions align with elven policies, without hurting anyone innocent, then I'll simply accept it. If she resorts to unsavory tactics…well, I'll make sure there is evidence of her misdeeds and she'll be appropriately dealt with in accordance with your policies." (Mizuki)
Cara's face relaxes some.
"So, you won't take matters into your own hands, or involve Lady Nedonera?" (Cara)
I smirk at her.
"I only meant that any consequences of her actions would be consistent with your country's policies. Nothing more, nothing less." (Mizuki)
All the color drains from Cara's face, and she seems like she wants to say something. However, she seems to come to terms with it.
"I suppose that's fair." (Cara)
Cara appears to reflect on her own statement for a few minutes, and as she does, I hear an enthusiastic voice ring out behind me.
"Mizuki! Mizuki!"
I turn around in surprise to see a small elven boy running towards me with a huge grin – Cera, the boy I saved from being hit by a horse-drawn cart.
I grin back at him and wave as he approaches. Following closely behind him is an elven woman running frantically – Kara, his mother. She's wearing a dark blue dress with her brown hair pinned up behind her head. She catches up to Cera, and they both arrive in front of me at the same time.
"Cera! Kara! You decided to come! I hope you've been doing well?" (Mizuki)
Cera nods fervently and wraps his arms around my leg in a hug.
"Yeah! You kept your promise, Mizuki! Mom was so happy that she smiled the whole night after you left!" (Cera)
I give a surprised glance to Kara, and she's visibly embarrassed, and some color can be seen in her cheeks. However, before I can tease her, Cara interjects.
"Uhm…Mizuki…do you care to introduce me? First Kudra, and now these two, I wasn't aware that you were so well known by Avalon's residents." (Cara)
"Sure. This polite young man here is Cera, and his mother there is Kara. Cera, Kara, this woman is Lady Cara of the Egris house." (Mizuki)
Kara becomes visibly flustered, and curtsies at Cara quickly. Before she can speak, however, Cera is unperturbed by this revelation and turns to me again.
"Woahhh, Mizuki! You're friends with a princess, a noble, and a dragon!? That's so cool!" (Cera)
I don't get the chance to correct him about Cara and I being friends. Cara leans down to eye level with Cera with a huge smile.
"That's right! Mizuki and I are friends, so please make sure to tell everyone you meet about it. What about you, Cera, how did you and Mizuki meet?" (Cara)
"Good evening, Lady Cara. We both met Mizuki a few days ago – he saved Cera's life. He was very kind to us afterwards, too, even though I treated him with suspicion just for being human." (Kara)
"Yeah, why is everyone so mean to you, Mizuki? I clapped for you when you got your necklace, and I told those other people to clap, too!" (Cera)
Kara hangs her head in embarrassment, seemingly confirming Cera's story. So, some of those claps were from him, huh? That kid is going to make me cry – it's so sweet. Cara looks back at me in surprise following their responses.
"Mizuki…is that true? You really saved his life? How?" (Cara)
"He pulled him out of the street before a horse-drawn cart could run Cera over. It was a very close call, Lady Cara, and I'm certain Mizuki saved his life. I saw the whole thing unfold." (Kara)
"Yeah, that's right! Mizuki, was so fast, I didn't even see him coming!" (Cera)
Cara stares at me for several moments with an expression that's hard to interpret, then shakes her head in amusement without explanation. Cera, however, has moved on from this topic.
"Mizuki! Could you introduce me to the dragon? Please!" (Cera)
Cera is staring up at me with practical stars in his eyes…how can I say no to that? I sigh deeply.
[Hey, Nina, I've got an adorable little friend of mine here who desperately wants to meet you. Are you interested?] (Mizuki)
[Fufufu…anything for my fans! I'll be over shortly.] (Nina)
That is…surprising. I thought for sure she'd be sick of these people by now. I guess the fame is really going to her head. I smile down at Cera.
"Sure thing, Cera, but make sure to be polite and compliment her dress, okay? It's a green one, and she has green eyes like mine. I'm sure she'll be over here soon." (Mizuki)
Cara gives me a puzzled look, probably wondering how I'd know or orchestrate something like that. Before she can ask me about it, though, Nina arrives and wraps her arm through mine.
Cera looks at her, confused at first, but then seems to put all the details together. His eyes go wide in surprise, and he looks like he wants to worship Nina.
"Fufufu…hello, little one. Are you a friend of Mizuki's?" (Nina)
Cera is visibly flustered, and he's obviously trying hard to remember all the polite things to do. He starts to speak, then stops, and gives Nina an awkward bow.
"Great Dragon, he…I'm Cera, Great Dragon, it's nice to meet you! Your dress looks very pretty! Uhm…I…don't know if I'm Mizuki's friend…I'm just a kid…" (Cera)
Cera's voice trails off towards the end, and he looks a little unsure of himself.
"That's right, Lady Nedonera, Cera here is my friend. We have him to thank for all the applause during my crest ceremony." (Mizuki)
"Oh? Then thank you for helping Mizuki at the ceremony, Cera. If you're his friend, then that also makes us friends! Is that okay?" (Nina)
Cera looks like he's about to pass out from happiness. From Nina I sense immense…excitement?
"I'm…dragon…friends…" (Cera)
[Mizuki…he's adorable…I want one as soon as possible!] (Nina)
Yikes…it's not like she can speed things up, though, so I don't need to worry. It's already a nightly endeavor.
At this point, Cara decides to interject with a curtsy to Nina.
"Good evening, Lady Nedonera, I hope you're enjoying the reception." (Cara)
Nina narrows her eyes at her in amusement.
"Fufufu…yes, it's quite fun. I just wish the elves here were more welcoming to Mizuki. I saw you walking arm-in-arm with him earlier, though, so I guess that's pretty welcoming." (Nina)
That…sounds a lot like jealous Nina, but I don't sense any jealousy. Cara raises her eyebrows over Nina's comment.
[Uhm…Nina, this isn't a jealousy thing, is it?] (Mizuki)
[No, no, I can sense from you that I don't need to be concerned. Fufufu…I'm just teasing her some.] (Nina)
Teasing her? Cera looks confused.
"Lady Cara, if you were holding Mizuki's arm, are you married? That's what Mom and Dad always did." (Cera)
Cera!? I thought we were friends little buddy! Waves of amusement are coming through my connection with Nina.
"Fufufufu…yes, Lady Cara, will you be taking Mizuki as a husband? That would certainly keep us all living in the Elven Kingdom like you wanted." (Nina)
That damn dragon is in on this too!? Cara smirks at Nina and lets out a deep sigh.
"I admit, I considered it after getting to spend the evening with him. Unfortunately, my house will riot if there's no chance for heirs from a romance, so Mizuki being human is an issue. Plus, he'll only live a few decades and be young for even less time." (Cara)
Cara seems completely unfazed by Nina's question. What the hell is wrong with everyone on this planet?
Kara and I are staring at each other dumbfounded over this conversation, and she's wisely taken to covering Cera's ears. Zara is just watching the events with modest interest. I sense Nina's excitement rising.
"Lady Cara, are you not aware that if you and Mizuki were to have numerous children, some of them would be elves and even high elves? Furthermore, due to my blessing, he'll age slower than normal humans." (Nina)
Cara's eyes go wide in surprise, and she becomes thoughtful.
"Lady Nedonera, truly? You're sure of that?" (Cara)
"Fufufu…oh yes, quite sure." (Nina)
I've had enough.
[Nina…what in the actual hell is the matter with you? You told me you don't like sharing, but now you're trying to push a third woman on me? Your allowance for Ilina was surprising enough.] (Mizuki)
[Fufufu…I won't have to share because you don't have any serious interest in her. I just enjoy seeing you express your preference for me over other women.] (Nina)
That's as toxic as a reason could possibly be.
[Oh yeah? Well, I'm going to interpret behavior like this as you condoning me sleeping with her, so please cut it out from now on. I doubt Cara is that invested, but it's still rude to her.] (Mizuki)
Hopefully that straightens Nina up. I sense confusion from her. Perfect.
[Mizuki, if you're just sleeping with her occasionally, I don't care. So long as she openly acknowledges it, and your children with her are recognized. Ilina was hard to tolerate at first because you obviously cared for her deeply. This woman would be more like a mistress to you.] (Nina)
I'm speechless…that's extremely twisted. I notice Cara staring at me expectantly.
"Well, Mizuki, what do you think? I doubt we could ever get married, but a romance while you're still reasonably young is doable." (Cara)
Well, I can't tell her that I'm already with Nina. I'm really not interested in forming some large harem, though, no matter how much I joke about it.
"Look, Cara, I'm flattered, but you don't really know me. Plus, we're still a long way from your people tolerating my romance with an elf." (Mizuki)
Cara flashes me an annoyed expression. That's fair…she just offered to sleep with me, and I basically said 'no thanks', so I guess it's insulting.
"Tch…very well, just let me know if you change your mind. I should probably tend to other matters now, so enjoy the rest of your evening. Mizuki, Lady Nedonera. Kara, Cera." (Cara)
Cara gives a polite curtsy to Nina, then turns and walks into the crowd. Shortly after, I notice the bracelet on Kara glowing red.
"Uhm…it looks like we have to go. Mizuki, Great Dragon, it was…interesting…to visit with you. Please have a good evening. Cera, say your goodbyes!" (Kara)
Yeah, I wouldn't know how to follow up that circus performance either. Cera seems to have moved on from it already, though.
"Bye Mizuki! Bye Great Dragon! I hope I see you again!" (Cera)
"Fufufu…take care, little one, we may visit you sometime!" (Nina)
I wave goodbye to them both with a grin, and Nina, Zara, and I are left alone.
"Zara, thank you for being the only normal one here." (Mizuki)
"Fufufu…thank you for never trying to sleep with me." (Zara)
"Not a problem." (Mizuki)
I respect her right to expose herself to danger while adventuring, but that doesn't mean I can see her that way. Regardless of wolf-kin customs, she's a child in my eyes.
"Mizuki, this reminds me, can we retire for the night? I was quite pleased with how you shot down Lady Cara." (Nina)
I did not need to learn about this fetish of hers tonight…or ever. I groan out loud in frustration.
"Let's find Alto, and let Ilina know of our departure, then we can go." (Mizuki)
Zara and Nina smile and nod, and we take off through the crowd.
We've endured our first night of the royal announcement.
