Chapter 10 - Be the hunter or be hunted

"Tell me Koa, how dare you hold my beloved as though she is yours?"

Koa, scoffed as he looked at Arzhel, the King of vampires.

"How are you certain she is your beloved? She is merely a human girl."

Arzhel, laughed as he leaned back on the chair he sat on. "I have lived far longer than you, do not take me for a fool you pup."

Koa, squeezed his hand and felt the urge to punch him to death but he refrained himself. If he went against the King of vampires, it would mean war. He was not ready for that, yet.

"You have just broken free of your shackles and the first thing you do is terrorize innocent people? Typical of you." Koa said with obvious disgust.

"At least I'm not kissing ass with that witch you sleep around with."

"I had no idea you were curious of whom I bedded."

"Only when the same witch tried to kill me"

"Did she really? I don't recall giving her such orders" Koa said sarcastically.

Arzhel, smirked and stared at him cruelly. "I have her head in case you're interested, maybe it can serve some purpose to you."

"Is that what you intend to do with that human girl? Make her one of your sex slaves?" Koa taunted him.

Arzhel, looked at the fire that was supposed to keep the room warm but the coldness which came from both sides, rendered it useless.

"Do not provoke me, Wolf."

"Do not interfere, Vampire. You cannot force that shitty prophecy down her throat."

"I'm not forcing anything. If I wanted to, I'd have taken her from the moment I was free."

Koa looked at him suspiciously. "Why didn't you?"

"Because I am not a barbarian like you. I do not take under the pretext of saving."

Koa, shut his eyes and pushed back the boiling anger. "It seems we won't sign the treaty afterall. Surely wolves and vampires cannot be friends."

Arzhel laughed at his words. "Surely you jest? You destroyed that chance once you stole what was mine. I have no desire to form any bond with you. I merely came to observe, fate is just on my side."

Fate?

Koa scoffed at the word. He didn't believe in fate, it was merely a delusion. "We shall see how fate continues this story."

Arzhel stood up and turned away. "The next time we meet, it will be on the battle field, be prepared."

Koa, burned with fury as he watched Arzhel walk away. He hated the fact that he couldn't do anything as much as he wanted to. He knew as the Alpha, he was beyond powerful but compared to the King of Vampires, who had claimed the mountain of death, he was nothing.

He however, had another way to defeat him but it was only a matter of time. "Soon, I will have your head on my sword." He swore.

Koa, turned to look at his Gamma. "Tell everyone that from this moment onwards, the vampires are our sworn enemy and anyone found interacting with them, will be beheaded."

"Yes, Alpha."

"How did you escape from the magic circle?"

Ruelle, ignored June's question and her expression of shock. She pushed past her and went straight to where Eloise laid.

"What the hell did you give her?!" Ruelle snapped, once she saw the unconscious body of her sister.

"You shouldn't be awake." June muttered, with slight fear laced in her words.

Ruelle, turned towards June, with murder on her mind. She stretched out a dagger and pointed it to her neck. "Why don't I try putting you to sleep too."

June, looked at her with disgust as she stepped backwards. "You bitch!"

Ruelle, chuckled at her words. She had no time to converse with June but she needed to know if Eloise was going to be alright. "You shouldn't call me a bitch, given the fact that you're nothing but a dirty dog."

"Shut the hell up!" June snarled at her. "I can kill you in an instant if you provoke me."

"Try it and you'll find yourself paralyzed for life." She warned.

Ruelle, knew she stood no chance against June but, she also knew that June was scared of her for some reason.

They had placed her under a spell and, trapped her but she had managed to escape in less than a day. She knew that June probably thought she had some power, and she was planning to use that to her advantage.

"What are you? There's no possible way a mere human could manage to escape."

Ruelle, groaned and placed her free hand on her head. "Can you bitches just decide? You were so keen on convincing me that I'm not human and now, you claim I am? Stick to one story, it'll make your lies more convincing."

June, looked at Ruelle and then at Eloise, whilst contemplating on what to do. She could easily snap Ruelle's neck and kill Eloise, but she couldn't. Not when she felt Ruelle had some power backing her up or, the fact that the Alpha had given her specific orders to keep them both alive.

"I know you have no reason to trust me Ruelle but, I need you to calm down?"

"Calm down?" Ruelle, was flabbergasted at her suggestion. "You try to kill I and my sister and you expect me to be calm about that? What next June? You'd offer cookies and tea, you two-faced witch?!"

"You don't understand–"

"Then make me! Make me freaking understand why I should trust you, when you've done nothing but lie?"

June, began walk towards Eloise, but stopped when Ruelle, stepped in front of her and pressed the cold metal on her neck.

"Ruelle–"

"Don't underestimate me Wolf, I might not be as strong as you but I'm skilled at slitting throats. Another dead person on my list won't hurt me." Ruelle threatened with every intent to carry it out.

June raised her hands in the air and stepped back. "I merely want to show you that your sister is fine. I gave both of you a potion to sleep for three days."

"Then why am I awake?" Ruelle questioned.

"I should be asking you that. There's no way a wolf can wake up from my potion, much less a person who claims to be human."

Ruelle, looked at Eloise and wondered on what move she should make. Should she risk killing this woman and getting killed by wolves or should she play safe?

Play safe, she was going to play safe for the life of her sister.

"Will she be alright?"

"I assure you she will. There was no intention to harm either of you when the potion was given."

"Then why did you give it to us?"

"To protect you."

Ruelle, raised her eyes in confusion.

What in heavens was this creature talking about?

"Protection? Protection from what exactly?"

"Vampires."

Ruelle, looked past June's shoulder and locked eyes with Koa, who had just spoken.

"Vampires?" Ruelle repeated.

"Yes, it was given to protect you from those creatures?"

"What right do you have to protect us? Who gave you the audacity?"

"I was merely doing the right thing."

Ruelle, placed her hands on her head and released a loud scream which caused June to stagger backwards.

When she stopped, she looked at Koa with anger. "So doing the right thing is by deceiving us and trying to trap us?!"

"You won't have listened to what I had to say."

"Listen?" Ruelle scoffed at his words. "I'd rather listen to what the vampires have to say to me than you that tricked me."

Koa paused, trying to calm her down. "What of if those vampires killed your aunt?"

"What are you talking about?"

"That ambush in town, you think it was normal? The vampires sent those hunters to kill you."

"Why didn't you say this since?"

"Because I wanted to protect you from the truth."

"The truth? The truth is that you  tried to bury it, by poisoning us."

"My method was bad but my intention was pure." Koa said defensively.

Ruelle, looked at him one last time before she turned around and walked back to where her sister laid.

"Eloise will wake up by tomorrow, I assure you." Koa said.

Ruelle nodded, and chose to remain silent.

"I sincerely apologize for everything we put you through, I hope you can understand that we're not your enemies."

Ruelle, thought otherwise but chose to remain silent. For now, there was nothing she could do. She had to play by their games if they were to survive.

She pressed her lips in a thin line and nodded.

Koa, turned to June and glared at her. "You've disappointed me, I won't let this happen again. Take care of them and make sure everything doesn't get messed up."

"Yes Alpha " June said as she bowed.

"Koa." Ruelle called out to him without turning back.

"Yes?"

"Why do the vampires want us?"

"There's a prosphesy and they believe you're connected to it."

"A prophesy ehn?" Ruelle chuckled as she caressed her sister's face. "They attacked us for a prophesy? So why did they come today?"

"To further threaten us to give you up. That's why we did all that to act as though we didn't have you girls."

"I messed that up didn't I?" Ruelle mumbled.

"It is my fault, I should have made you aware."

"Yes you should have. I don't trust you one bit but, I'll let this slide, afterall you saved I and El previously, I owe that to you."

"You have every option to leave." Koa said.

"That's an option now?" Ruelle chuckled bemused at his change of character "Don't you think it's a little too late to be saying that?"

"Why?" He questioned, puzzled at her decision. "You can leave this madness."

"And get hunted down again? No thanks. From what you're saying, I can presume that this isn't going to end anytime soon?"

"It isn't."

"Then I'll pick the lesser of two evils."

Koa, was confused at her way of thinking but, decided not to question it. Either ways, she was not opposing him."Do you trust me?" He asked her.

Ruelle stiffened at his words."Do not get me wrong Koa, I neither trust Wolf, Vampire, nor any man. The only person I trust and care about, is the one that you put under a spell." She paused to let her words sink in.

"I'm merely being selfish. If we are to be hunted here, your people would go down too? You'll have no choice but to protect us. Besides, I don't mind a few wolves dying." She continued.

"You are cruel. But I understand."

"Before you leave, Koa tell me one more thing."

"What do you wish to know?"

Ruelle, looked at the pale skin of her sister which looked almost lifeless. She seemed like the true definition of sleeping beauty.

"How did my aunt die?"

"A vampire sunk his fangs into her neck and, blood was drained from her body until she became nothing but bones."

Ruelle, chose not to comment anymore but let him leave. She immersed herself in her thoughts and concluded that although she had no idea what was going on, one thing was certain.

Either she became the hunter or she was going to get hunted.
