Chapter 5 - 5 Path of magic

"Tling Tling"

The small bell attached to the door on the ancient looking store rang as Richard pushed it open. Mrs Hagner was already done with her shopping, and she was impatient to go back to the orphanage. So after arranging a room for Richard to stay for the future, she quickly apperated away. Either she was well and truly worried about the children , or she was anxious to try out whatever she had bought at the beauty shop. Personally, Richard leaned onto the latter possibility.

The moment he walked in, he was suprised to see a wild haired elderly man sitting at the front of the table.

"Aaaah" the one and only Garrick Ollivander exclaimed as Richard walked in, almost jubilant to see him.

"A fresh face" he said as he rubbed his hands. " Hogwarts first year ?Muggle born?"

"Probably, never knew them " Richard replied to which the man, Mr Ollivander looked a bit ashamed.

"Sorry about that, " Ollivander quickly apologised before he cheered up once more.

"Well then Mr.... "

"Cloverfield, Richard Cloverfield" he introduced himself .

"Right! Mr Cloverfield, what is your wand arm? "

"If you mean my writing hand, then I'm right handed" Richard played along, immersing himself to the role of an ignorant muggle born.

Asking him to hold his right arm out, Ollivander began taking measurements using a somewhat semi-sentient tape measure.

"You see Mr Cloverfield" the man began to chat as he took measurements, "every Ollivander wand has a core of a powerful magical substance. We use unicorn hair, phoenix feathers and the dragon heart strings. Each wand has a different core so no two wands are the same. And I am here to find a wand that is best suited for you.."

Retracting the tape measure, he began rummaging through a shelf filled hastily with long boxes.

"Maple wood and unicorn hair. Supple and bit on the flexible side."

Ollivander pulled out a wand from one of the boxes before handing it over. But Richard barely had the time to experiment with it because it was snatched right back.

"Here, try this.." Ollivander once more presented a wand. A couple of waves, but no result. A couple more wands passed Richard's hands, but none of them seemed to fit.

"Another tricky customer ehh.." Ollivander seemed happy. Probably because he spends too much time alone in a shop, Richard thought as he looked at the man who was going through another shelf, his hair brushing the build up cobwebs.

"Here" Ollivander brought another wand. "Original Ceylon Iron wood. Sturdy and unbending. With dragon heartstring. Great for duels and favour fierce personalities. "

The moment Richard touched it, he felt magic. A part of his magic circuit came into life, building something in his body. Something like a sixth sense he had barely felt in his life. Small gusts ruffled Richard's clothes and his short cropped black hair as a small burst of magic left the tip of the wand, creating a dust cloud of glowing glitter.

"A perfect match!!" Ollivander rejoiced and so did Richard, but he paid no attention to the man's drivel about how he was destined for greatness. And so, as soon as he finished prattling on, Richard made a quick exit, paying the seven galleons he owed to Ollivander, his mind busy recalling some things.

Just as he had created in the lore of the world, the wizards had no such thing called a magic core or mana. Instead they were able to perform magic by using their soul to command the materiel world. This was also the most logical explanation he could come up with to describe their ability to use near endless amounts spells with the only side effect of becoming mentally fatigued.

This was how humans evolved after the era of enlightenment. To have the power of mind over matter. On the other hand, magical beasts lacked the intelligence to gain such power. Instead their bodies hold the magical command over magic, focused on a simple basic manner like humans had in the era of beasts.

Of course humans had limitations too. Just like how people are talented in some aspects but lack the talents in others, mana circuits also provide great versatility, but still lean to specific paths. Transfiguration, charms, dark arts, light arts, metamorph magics are some of the examples.

Moving back into his temporary residence in the leaky cauldron, Richard placed the wand in the holster and placed it on his night stand before sitting on the floor cross legged.

When he descended into the world, he made sure to acquire an innate skill set into his magic circuits. Namely structural identification, projection, tracing, enhancing, altering. The skill set that held everything a person in magical worlds need. Directly copied from Shirou Emiya from Fate series, these skills can serve as the best foundation for a person who dwell into the depths of Magicks.

Richard knew his purpose in this world. To generate enough Karma, and to leave a great legacy so this world could be easily assimilated to his soul, and thereby allow him to become a ROB. And to do this, he needed to have his own speciality. Else, he would always be compared to others. Which was also why he took the affinity to sword into his magic circuits as well. But he didn't limit himself to what Emiya was in Fate verse. If he had, then the Karma generated might dissipate to other verses.

He felt his magic circuits the moment he came to contact with the wand. So he knew how to open them up. He also knew that it would take time. Lots and lots of time. But for now he just needed access to the basic part of the circuit.
