Dusk in Riverton was relatively peaceful, as was that day. It was around the time of dinner when the screams started. Lucas's father went to look outside, warning them not to step outside. He returned in a few minutes and asked them to hide in corners without making any noise. Clara and Ethan started turning off the lamps and fires; after doing so, they held Lucas and Ivy in their arms and sat together silently. Lucas and Ivy were shivering from fear because they understood what was going on from their parents' actions.
After a while, Screams and fighting sounds finally seized; only the sound of fire was coming. Ethan went out to see, and after a while, others followed him. Outside was a dead battlefield, corpses, blood, broken and burning houses. Everything was destroyed except their house. Ethan was scared after seeing this scene. Usually, when Vampires attacked, they would cause little damage, one or two or no deaths, before the hunters repelled them or killed them—this kind of scene he had never witnessed till that day. Lucas and Ivy were just children; for them, this was horrifying. Ivy even fainted, and Clara picked her up in her arms. Before she could take her inside, two figures appeared in front of Ethan; even though they came very fast, Lucas could trace them coming from behind a ruined house.
Both were dressed in black, wrapped in black cloaks. Both had daggers in their hand covered in blood, their pale faces shining from the flames burning around. Drops of blood on their faces and their fangs gave them a scary look. Lucas could feel their gaze, which wasn't focused on their whole family but only on him. That wicked smile as if they were only having fun. Lucas could see a few corpses of wolves, companions of Hunters. He knew what that meant, that the hunters were also dead. They walked slowly towards us. Ethan tried to hide his family behind his broad figure, Lucas holding his arms tightly and Clara hugging unconscious Ivy.
One lunged, cut Ethan's head in one slash, moved back, and started laughing. Lucas, who was holding his father's arm, fell on the ground as Ethan's lifeless body fell on the ground with a thud. No sound came out of his throat; that was the first time he had seen the speed of a vampire. Though Lucas could make out his path, he had no idea how swiftly it had happened. He was terrified and helpless. He stood and hid behind Clara. Clara was crying without making any sound. She gave Ivy to Lucas and told him to run. Lucas started running in the opposite direction of those vampires; still, they seemed in no hurry. When Clara saw vampires not changing their pace, she ran in a different direction than Lucas. One of them again moved and slashed her head off. Lucas didn't dare to look behind. With that sound of a slash, he hugged Ivy more tightly and sped up his foolish escape.
Both of them laughed and swiftly appeared before Lucas. He tried to stop but fell because of the uneven ground. The vampires laughed loudly when he fell; their laughing faces were evil because of the blood and fangs. Lucas picked up Ivy and stood again, shaking with fear but holding Ivy tightly to his chest.
"Ivy, don't worry….I will protect you…We will live.", Lucas Whispered to unconscious Ivy. Though he was so terrified that he was shaking, not shivering.
Lucas gathered all his courage, whatever little amount he had, and looked straight at the vampires. They laughed and slowly moved towards him; he didn't dare to bat his eye. One lunged at him after what Lucas felt was a very long time. But to his surprise, he could see how he was moving and could see the swing of his dagger. He dodged him at the last moment and fell again on his back. The other vampire stopped laughing, and the one who attacked earlier attacked again. This time, Lucas couldn't dodge the dagger. He hugged Ivy tightly and turned his back towards the vampire.
Lucas was surprised as he heard a clash of metal from behind. He looked back and found a Hunter and a wolf standing between him and both the Vampires. Hunter was different from the ones who used to guard the village daily. He was wearing a leather jacket and holding a silver longsword in his right hand. The vampire who had attacked Lucas earlier was now one armless, and his face was ugly. The other one was supporting him with a severe face.
"Long time no see! Gideon, the Phantom." Said the one who was holding the other one.
