Chereads / The Metamorphosis of Lou Ben / Chapter 12 - Only Fate and Luck

Chapter 12 - Only Fate and Luck

As Xiao Weizhe and Wen Guoliang were solving life's mysteries, Lou Ben and Qi Shuang were making life.

That is not to say Lou Ben would have a child, but instead got close to his new beloved.

Lou Ben came to this world trying to adapt, and that only made it easier to ride the trend of what is expected of mortals.

"Make love, do work, and eat." Lou Ben laid down in thought as he stared at the beautiful Qi Shuang.

He was thinking vigorously as to exhaust his mental power before slowly closing his eyes to sleep.

"I'll spend some time reading and getting used to this place before trying to do anything major. It's not too bad."

"To already have my life planned out by others is actually calming."

"I just got here and now I have a wife. She's not too complex and easy to speak to. Not that many people on earth are like this. Yes, one might be beautiful, but the right balance of complexity and comfort is needed."

"If Qi Shuang was on earth, then I'm sure she would not be the same person she is now. She can think in a complex manner, but when it comes to life, she wants it simple."

"There are many people who want a simple life, but this is a lie. It is only because of the world she lives in that she can truly appreciate a simple life."

Qi Shuang is a mortal trapped inside a small world, there is no possibility of escaping and what shapes her view more is that she genuinely holds the belief that what she has now is the best of what a mortal life can have.

The night went fast. Both parties of mortals and dao masters ended with anticipation for tomorrow.

In the morning Qi Shuang gave a kiss to Lou Ben.

After last night, the space between them seemed to disappear.

It was easy to give herself to Lou ben, because she knew that he was not going anywhere.

The moment a partner is decided, it is final.

Lou Ben will be staying at the library all his life. When they have children, they would be taught the ins and outs of Xiao palace. Those children will play in the library, wander the public spaces, and take turns picking jobs they want.

The palace of Xiao Weizhe had this remarkable thing about it. It was like a sanctuary for mortals. That is not to say that it doesn't have its own equal share of dangers.

While Lou Ben contemplated the grandness of Xiao palace, Qi Shuang was teaching him the way to maintain the library.

It was very simple.

How hard can it be, Qi Shuang never learned to read.

The organization of the library was a very simple task to Lou Ben.

Hardly any visitors went to the library, so the number of books out of order was small.

Each bookshelf held over a thousand books; each section was color coordinated with small inscriptions.

These inscriptions were the same ones etched into the bookshelf.

So, Qi Shuang didn't need to learn how to read them, she only needed to be able to match the book inscription on the cover to the coordinating bookshelf.

It only took Qi Shuang little less than two hours to explain this to Lou Ben and have him put away a few books, so he got the hang of things.

If Lou ben had any questions, there was even a book to hand to visitors to find a specific book they needed.

It was like the way things were done on Earth.

Lou Ben finished his job training, and Qi Shuang went to the public market to buy food.

In the library by himself, Lou Ben was darting from shelf to shelf.

"I need to find something that I can recognize easier, I need something that would be perfect for someone with little knowledge to pick up."

At this time of running back and forth, a figure emerged from the doorway.

"Servant Lou Ben!"

"We have a notice we would like for you to post at the desk."

Lou Ben returned to the desk and approached the other.

The figure was not too noteworthy, his looks were average, he carried himself as if the weight was on his shoulders, and his protruding nose was perched below his baggy eyes.

"Servant Lou Ben, this announcement is for all beings inside the palace of Xiao. Steward Wen Guoliang is looking for a disciple for master Xiao. All those interested in testing their luck are to report tomorrow at the palace entrance."

The figure spoke briefly without saying his name and walked through the doorway.

He had a single piece of paper, although he said to post it on the desk, what he really meant was to inform anyone that comes about this matter.

Lou Ben was alone with his thoughts "heaven has a strange way of doing things. Not too long after my arrival, there is an opportunity rise the social ladder…"

"I don't want to even believe it's my own luck. It's happening as if things were arranged. I'll go, but I can't help but have this sensation as if things are too easy for me."

"First, I was put in a rather easy place to begin with. Now, I might very likely get the chance to learn directly from master Xiao."

"I think the most likely reason is that I was placed in a flexible time of life."

"As if heaven had the will to give me this starting position as my welcome package."

"Who knows, maybe I am not fated to get the disciple position. At the very least it will help me see the palace forces at work."

Lou Ben sat at the welcome desk wondering if his luck was really at a new all-time high or if things were simply being given to him.

He grabbed a few more books off the shelves and continued to look for a book that would be simple to read. There were countless books that Lou Ben had piled up on the study desk.

He was arranging them in order of difficulty.

Although he couldn't read the glyphs, the easy to comprehend books flowed into his mind relatively suddenly.

It was as if there was another layer of understanding the knowledge in the books, like experiencing it from the eyes of the writer.

Lou Ben found a few books were children's stories.

Some told of animals accomplishing goals, and others told of kingdoms that rose and fell.

It took a long time to organize the books he wanted.

Eventually on the welcome desk laid three books.

The three books looked exactly alike.

They were bound with a leather cover, flimsy, and old.

It turned out to be a children's story that was split into three volumes.

Lou Ben didn't know the name of it, but he got the feeling that the three books were the best at understanding the language.

As he flipped through the story to get the level of difficulty, he understood that it revolves around a single main character and their search for something called 'the wish granting crystal'.

"So even in this world there are fables of unbelievable powers."

"Well, this puts into perspective the power level of this world. They might be extremely strong but the power in this world cannot overcome the might of heaven."

Lou Ben was satisfied.

He took his time checking out the three books.

Although he can't read the glyphs, it wasn't hard to mimic the shapes onto another paper.

"I think it's almost time to go home. I'm sure Qi Shuang has made it home is preparing food. I'll clean up my mess and enjoy this moment of life."

Lou Ben left the library with a smile and three books in hand.

Steward Wen Guoliang was preparing things at the entrance when Lou Ben entered his sights.

What drew his attention were three books.

It was not that they were extraordinary, but instead that they were extremely common.

"How can a mortal pick out those three? Ability to read or not. To find three of them requires luck and fate."

The three books that Lou Ben had chosen don't appear together unless someone has a strong affinity to them.

They might be able to find a single book, or often only be told the story by another person.

Wen Guoliang took a mental note of the faraway figure boldly walking home.

"Let's hope you enjoy the story. Haha, Lou Ben, Lou Ben, to think you may be related to that figure lost in history."

Lou Ben sensing a gaze from faraway he noticed Steward Wen Guoliang facing the entrance and beginning to use some sort of process to do something.

It caught his attention so he walked slowly and watched what was going to happen.

Wen Guoliang held up five golden crystals that floated around his palm.

Each crystal would shine at a different time.

As this occurred, a large standing doorway appeared.

He brought one last dark purple crystal and crushed it.

The debris of the crystal scattered and flew into the fog of the doorway.

"All arrangements are complete. Let me get some rest before this truly begins."

Wen Guoliang looked up at the endless sky and thought of his beloved.

"No matter how many years pass, my heart skips through the river of time and jumps ashore your end of the river."

"If it was not love, then all my thousands of years, will be nothing."

Wen Guoliang looked up as a tear rained down his cheek.

"I should also head home now. She has cooked me a wonderful meal again."
