Chapter 13 - Wedding night

"What are you looking at?!" Anna exclaimed.

Claire's almond-shaped eyes were charming and captivating; just one glance could make people fall into them. Looking into those eyes, Anna felt inferior and instinctively looked away. Claire chuckled, "No wonder they say that looking closely at an ugly person is a kind of cruelty."

"Who are you calling ugly?!" Anna grabbed the makeup brush on the dressing table, ready to fight Claire.

"What are you arguing about? The guests have arrived. Why are you still here? Go out!" Mariah walked into the restroom and gave Anna a sideways glance. Anna immediately shrank her shoulders and backed out.

After all, it was the wedding of the Miller family, and the guests were not small figures.

In City A, besides the Miller family, there were also the Austus family and the Grey family—the three major wealthy families. If she could use this opportunity to get her daughter into the eyes of the rich and powerful, it would also fulfill her wish. "Claire, you should also hurry out. The wedding is about to start."

"Oh, by the way, you're the only one here. The groom hasn't arrived yet. You'll have to figure it out yourself—either wait for him or get married alone!"

As she spoke, Mariah's eyes were filled with sarcasm and disdain. A country bumpkin like Claire, if it weren't for the need to fulfill the family marriage contract, probably wouldn't have had the chance to come to City A in her lifetime.

Although the Miller family was the number one wealthy family in City A, she was still just a country girl with no educational background and was not well-regarded. In this lifetime, she had no way of turning things around.

When Claire heard this, she remained calm. After all, she had agreed to get married to have a reason to stay in City A and investigate her mother's cause of death.

Claire smiled obediently, picked up her wedding dress, and stood up. "It's okay, I'll go over first."

No sooner had the words left her mouth than she spotted a handsome man in an exquisite white wedding suit walking up to her. For some reason, she felt like a fool for drooling over him.

Soon, the wedding ceremony began. Claire, still smiling obediently, picked up her wedding dress and stood up. Alex extended his hand to her, which she gladly accepted. The wedding ceremony soon began.

Claire wore a white wedding dress that matched perfectly with Alexander's, and she had an elegant smile on her face as they walked to the music. All the guests present were captivated by Claire's ethereal temperament. Elegant and obedient, she appeared as pure and flawless as a blank sheet of paper.

The guests looked at Claire's innocent appearance with strange expressions, whispering and pointing. Even the wealthy businessmen whom Mariah wanted to flatter kept their distance from her. Mariah's face was contorted with anger, and her eyes seemed to want to tear a piece of flesh off Claire's body.

Claire seemed to sense something and responded with a smile. After the wedding, Claire and Alex both got into a luxury car and were taken to the Miller family villa.

Before she could get familiar with her surroundings, Alexander took her hand and led her to the master bedroom. As she entered the room with her new husband, she thought to herself that from today onwards, she would be living with him under the same roof.

Pushing open the door, the room was silent, and the lights were off. Alex quickly switched on the lights; he didn't want her to think he had married her for her body or something.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Miller," Alex said, as if marrying her was his greatest achievement.

Hearing his voice, Claire felt tense about the prospect of living together in the same room. Claire looked closer, and her gaze fell on Alexander's eyes. He was quite attractive.

Alex held her hands, and with a sudden pull, she lost her balance.

Claire was startled and looked up, using the moonlight to see his face clearly.

"Ah!" Claire closed her eyes, feeling herself falling against a hard chest. Her face was slightly embarrassed; after all, she was struggling to get out of his hold.

"If you struggle again, I'll understand that you want to do something with me," Alex's voice was hoarse and low, and Claire's face suddenly turned red. Biting her lip and suppressing her embarrassment, she warned in a soft voice, "Mr. Miller, please behave yourself!"

"I drank with you yesterday!" Alex's lips curled up. "I would've forgotten if you hadn't mentioned it. That bottle of wine was worth two million."

"Even if you took a sip, it would still cost two hundred thousand."

"Give me the money for the wine." Looking at Alexander's outstretched hand, Claire's face turned pale. "Do you even have that much awareness?" Claire sensed the danger in Alex's words and, in a panic, pushed him away and fled from his embrace.

Without noticing the zipper that connected them, Claire accidentally pushed Alex down to the ground. "Mr. Miller, are you okay?" Claire felt guilty and tried to help him up, but she was met with a smile and a sexy glare from Alex.

"It's good to stay in my arms like this—I like it here!" Alex said through gritted teeth. His eyes were filled with admiration and love for the girl in front of him, though the latter seemed not to realize it. Even after all this, he still felt like teasing her. "So Miss Claire should pay me; you don't want to take that wine for free," he said in an even more seductive tone.

With her face turning even redder, she whispered, "I... I don't have any money."

It was true; she did have some money, but if she gave it to Alex, she wouldn't have enough to start investigating her mother's death or start working.

"No money?"
