Chapter 1 - Curb Sitting

It's cold tonight. I sit on the curb while rethinking my life choices. Despite my sad appearance, I was quite happy you know? I had a girlfriend who made me feel needed, I had friends and people who I thought liked me. Most of all? I was happy... emphasis on was. It all came down like a domino effect. Firstly, my girlfriend broke up with me. All those friends, I threw that away. My job, got beaten up by co-workers and got fired. And now I'm not even sure what emotion I am currently feeling. Probably because I just got fired... Like ten minutes ago. As I sit on the concrete curb, I'm watching as water flows down the gutter into a nearby drain. Using my suit jacket as a makeshift raincoat to attempt to stay dry, as pointless as it is.

I start going through my phones photo gallery, looking at all those pictures I took. I've never been into taking selfies, but my girl.. Well, ex-girlfriend told me to take them, so that the moment can be remembered. I'm getting pissed looking at her. I turn off my phone, as seeing death scrolling through my pictures isn't helping. I watch as cars pass by, splashing water on the road. I wonder if they are going home? They could be going somewhere else entirely. You never know in this city after all.

Right... this city. I live in a city called Demont. It's not exactly the best for sight seeing, I'll be honest. But the place looks amazing on a mountain not too far away during night time. I came here because of my job. I left my family, old friends and my hometown. Even though its in the same country, It's still so far away. Now, I'm not to sure why I came here in the first place. This place only shines during the night, physically and literally. The people are way nicer during night compared to day. During day, its always "Get out the way!" and other variations of mean people doing mean things. My old company that I worked for not even an four hours ago was one of those "mean people". More like a building that is full of judgemental assholes. I caught people having sex, not taking they're job seriously and some people even doing drugs... the stuff that makes your brain rot kind. And the second you show any, and I mean any kind of weakness they abuse it from you. They will walk all over you, all because you gave them five dollars, or you said hi to them... when did kindness become a weakness?

I should probably go now, I had enough of getting pattered by rain through my suit jacket. as I get up from the curb, the dry spot that I was sitting on immediately became wet... I should probably buy an umbrella. Walking to the nearest Seven Ten store, my everything became wet. Or at least I hope not, I'd still like to have my phone dry. I enter the convenience store and got hit in the face with hot air from the A/C. It feels nice, but my clothes are still wet so that's fun. I pick up an umbrella from a stand and take it to the front desk, where there is a small line. At the front of the line, there is a old man. And next to a slushie machine is a pale woman who is quite small. She's wearing clothes that aren't very suitable for the cold, nor the rain. The old man goes and leaves to his car outside. "Hello sir, how can I help you?" Says the man who seems like he has it rough currently, I'm with you dude, trust me. "Just this umbrella thanks." "cool, that'll be $4.99" I take my wallet out of the wet jacket and pull out five dollars. "Here you go." "Thanks sir, have a great night." As I begin to leave, the sound of really loud sipping out of a straw fills my ears. I turn to the small pale lady, who has a strawberry slushie in hand.

"You going to pay for that?" I ask her. She just... Shrugs... I look towards the cashier who is not bothered what so ever. I sigh and open my wallet, hand her five dollars and say "At least get an umbrella, the rain isn't going anywhere tonight." She stops drinking for a solid 5 seconds. She takes her right hand out of her shorts and slowly grabs the money. "Thank you..." She says quietly. And just like that, I leave with a smile on my face. Sadly the rain took the smile away, reminding me with its presence. I sigh, open my umbrella and start walking. There is lots of people out tonight, better get home soon.
