Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 "The Latest"

Sunday morning, my sister and I were in the kitchen having breakfast.

-Today's gonna be a fun day.

-Oh, yeah, interrogation of a hit man, interrogation of that guy who ran away. I can't think of anything more fun.

-Yeah. Personally, I'm still in high spirits because I found fingerprints on the knife yesterday.

-That was a real jackpot, now we have proof. But we don't have the murderer in custody to prove his guilt.

-By the way, what do you think about that guy we arrested yesterday?

-I don't think he's a killer or an accessory.

-I don't think so either, there's no way a murderer could have miscalculated like that.

-We'll check his fingerprints against the ones found on the blade today, but I don't think they'll match.

-Yeah, they're 100% not his prints. He doesn't look like a killer.

We'd been getting ready for work for about another 30 minutes, so we left the house. We walked 10 minutes to the police station. Once inside the building, we went up to the floor we wanted and went to the inspectors' office.

-Good morning, everyone. -said my sister and I as we entered the office.

-Good morning to you, too. -said our colleagues.

-We learnt the real name of our detainee.

-What's his real name?

-Daniel Alenzo.

-I wonder what about the fingerprints?

-Alice checked them and the verdict is that the fingerprints belong to another person.

-It's even more interesting. And my last question, when's the interrogation?

-It's like a verse, question, interrogation. Interrogation in ten minutes.

-Fine.

During the ten minutes that we waited for the interrogation to begin, my colleagues and I discussed the case. When we finished our discussions, we all left the office and went to the interrogation room. When we entered the interrogation room, we saw Signor Alenzo, who was very unhappy (you could see it on his face).

-And so let's begin, Signor Daniel Alenzo, you are accused of forging documents and false testimony.

-Question number one: why did you give false testimony?

Daniel just kept silent, as if he was staring into the void and didn't notice anything around him.

-Do you know who killed Francesco Salvione, Monica Fabbri and Gerald Linswand?

-No. -I was surprised he didn't keep his mouth shut.

-And here you are again, lying brazenly.

-I don't know why you think I'm lying.

-I can feel it. -I walked up to the man who was being questioned, and said.

-I won't tell you anything anyway.

I came even closer to him and bent down and whispered something in his ear that only he and I could hear.

-Do you know the surname ...? -I did it, I said the last name, his last name. Everyone knew his last name and knew who he was, so saying his last name was the best leverage.

Having said that, I stepped away from him and went to the wall and leaned against it and crossed my arms over my chest.

-I'll tell you everything. -said the one who heard my words nervously started tapping his fingers on the table.

-So?

-I know who the killer is. It's Jack Olins, my wife's brother, she's dead. -said the guy with a sigh.

-Why would your wife's brother kill these people?

-People? They're not people, they're just.... no matter. The thing is, my wife was in this sect and these goddamn sectarians, they sacrificed her. They stabbed her in the heart and then they dipped their rings in her blood. They had these rings, like a symbol of power, only the sect leaders had them.

-Do you know where your wife's brother is now?

-No, I don't know where he is. But I do know that he's leaving town at 4:00 p.m. today.

-What's the details?

-He's going to Florence.

-So he'll be at Termini railway station at 4pm today?

-Yes, he'll be there.

We questioned Daniel for another 20 minutes or so and then we finished the interrogation. The man was taken out of the interrogation room and my colleagues and I stayed there.

-What did you say to him, that he told us everything at once?

-Nothing special, I just used a psychological method.

Five minutes later, the guy who tried to kill me and Ashley on Friday was brought into the interview room.

-Hello again. How's the shoulder?

-It's fine.

-Signor Vincent Giallo, who hired you to kill me and my sister?

And another silent man.

-The longer you don't talk, the longer you spend in jail. -Silvio said calmly.

-Jack Olins hired me. Paid me a lot of money to kill Rosalind Grace and Ashley Grace.

We interrogated for another half an hour and then went to the inspectors' office. There my colleagues and I began to plan an operation to apprehend our killer Jack Olins. We decided that at 3pm we would all be at the railway station waiting for Olins to appear, we would split up and track him down. Once we had finished planning the apprehension operation, we began to go about our duties. I went to the lab where I worked with Alice on forensics and reports. Ashley, Dante and Silvio stayed in the inspector's office to discuss other unsolved cases. At 2.30pm we left the police station and drove to Termini station, with a few cars with help.

-So here we are. -said I after ten minutes of driving, arriving at the station.

Ashley and Alice were in my car with me.

-So we're splitting up now, or maybe it's better if it's just me and Rose. -Ashley was on the phone with Dante and Silvio.

We got out of the car and decided that Ashley and I would track down the perp and everyone else would split up.

-Shall we go? -My sister asked me.

-Let's go.

Signor Alenzo had also shown us pictures of this Jack Olins, so we'd recognise him in the crowd. Ashley and I walked around the station as passers-by, looking for our killer.

-How do we proceed?

-Situationally, most likely. -Ashley said with a sigh.

-I have a feeling that when we catch him, the interrogation will be interesting. -I said, and we walked closer to the station.

Finally, after 30 minutes of walking round the station, we got lucky.

-Do you think it's him? -I asked Ashley, nodding at a guy standing nearby.

-Yeah, it definitely looks like him. - my sister said before we ran after this very similar guy.

He spotted us and ran away. Olins ran out of the station and towards an abandoned apartment block. The guy we were chasing, he ran into the first entrance of the block of flats. My sister and I chased him all over the house for about ten minutes, when we were already desperate to find him we heard a rustle in one of the abandoned flats. So we started sneaking round.

-Shh, he might hear us. -I whispered as quietly as I could, pressing my back against the cold stone wall.

-On the count of three, here we go.

-One...two...three. -and a shot rang out.

It was a warning shot.

-Hands behind your head. -Ashley shouted, pointing the gun at the perp.

The perp put his hands behind his head.

-Jack Olins, you are hereby charged with the premeditated murder of three people under article 575 of the Italian penal code.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can be used against you. -While Ashley read the charges and rights, I handcuffed Olins.

I called Dante with the good news that the killer had been apprehended. Dante, Silvio, and Alice were at the driveway five minutes later, where Ashley and I were bringing the killer out. We put him in the car and drove to the police station. Back at the police station, we compared Olins' fingerprints to the fingerprints on the blade. And the prints were identical, so now we had a perpetrator and we had proof. After checking the fingerprints, we started questioning Olins.

-My name is Jack Olins and it was I who killed those three sectarians. -started Olins.

-Why did you do it?

-The thing is, my sister used to be a member of this sect, but then she wanted to leave and these fanatics decided that since my sister was no longer useful, why not sacrifice her. They stabbed her in the heart and then dipped their rings in her blood. They did that to everyone they sacrificed, and I did the same to them.

He narrated slowly without stopping, his eyes blank, but he smiled, he had no remorse for what he had done. On the contrary, he felt he had restored justice.

I did to them what they did to my sister, and I'm glad they died as painfully as she did. -barely audible, the guy said, smiling.

-I'm happy you're so funny, go to jail and have fun. You're getting life in prison, by the way. -Ashley exhaled.

-Thank you, but shouldn't you have caught them sooner? Or are you only good at putting people in jail who did your job for you? -Olins asked with a sneer.

-Listen to me, you're in an interrogation, not a circus to laugh at. -Ashley said in an extremely serious tone.

-All right, you guys sit here and laugh and do whatever you want, but I'm going to the lab. -said I and walked out of the interview room.

An hour later, Ashley came into the lab and told me all about the interrogation.

-Well, congratulations, the Ring case is now officially solved.

-Yeah, now we can sleep easy knowing that justice has been served.

To be continued...
