"Are you sure we're only eloping to get married? This isn't some elaborate plan to take us straight to the heavens, is it?" Aiden asked, his voice laced with a mix of dry humor and lingering adrenaline. Beside him, Serena struggled to catch her breath, her chest heaving as she gripped the steering wheel with trembling hands. The near miss had left both of them shaken, their hearts racing as if they were trying to outrun the danger they had just escaped.
"This is not the time for jokes, Aiden," she snapped sharply. "Dammit! That was way too close. And I hate it you're calm even now!"
Aiden let out a low chuckle, though the tension in his eyes betrayed his own fear. He reached over to clasp her hand, his grip firm despite how cold his fingers felt against her skin. It wasn't lost on her that he was trying to calm her down even though his own nerves were rattled. The coldness of his hands actually made her feel better. He's been scared too.
