"The last thing you want is for your Uncle Corrick to start doubting you."
Matthew's face drained of color at the chilling implication. Corrick's wrath wasn't something anyone survived unscathed. If suspicion turned his way, there would be no escape, no mercy for him. All his thoughts of living a peaceful life would go to hell.. It was why Matthew had planned to leave the country when he agreed to help Serena—before the man even sniffed a hint of betrayal.
Serena's voice turned icy as she glared at him. "I assume I don't need to spell out what happens if he suspects your involvement?"
Matthew swallowed hard, shaking his head. His palms were damp, his fingers itching to fidget but restrained by fear. "Good you know," Serena said. She leaned back in her chair, directing a piercing gaze his way, "Then stop wasting time here and handle it."
