Chapter 13 - CHAPTER THIRTEEN FALSE REWARDS

Clayton continued to follow the Elite to a small room, he recognized where they were. This room was used to hold the many items that were taken from travelers who had been arrested or killed by the holy Knights. It was damp and dust clung to the air, creating a thick fog-like atmosphere. It had been some time since anything was brought down here. In recent years nothing was ever brought down here due to the small amount of criminals ever being found in town. The travelers that did come to town weren't anything special and if they were they were smart enough not to do anything to draw the attention of the Holy Knights. Mostly the knights there would come across the small pack of wolves or run off a couple of drunks from the local bathhouses. Clayton reminisced on the quiet town he had spent years protecting and how the troubles never seemed to be that bad. Panagiot snapped his fingers, capturing Clayton's attention to him. He stood over a chest that had built a thick layer of dust across the top of the lid. "When was this brought down here?" Panagiot asked in his deep voice, barely muffled by his helmet. Clayton looked at the chest and read the small label that hung from the lock, "Eight years ago sir." Clayton stated as he jerked into attention. Panagiot took hold of the lock with his massive hand and crushed it with ease. It fell to the ground creating a loud sharp thud sound, it knocked the dust that lay on the cold stone and burst into the air. "Why has no one cleaned down here? This place should be cleaned every day." Clayton kept his gaze toward the wall, "Sir, I lack a respectable answer, Sir." Panagiot stood up in front of Clayton. The size difference was more than noticeable, the Elite towered over the young knight. "Relax. There is no point in being so formal when it is only yourself and I down here." Clayton was somewhat shocked to hear this. Clayton loosened his stance and allowed his shoulders to drop, and his muscle to release the tension they had built. "Look at me boy." Clayton's gaze rose to meet the massive Elite. Panagiot's eyes sat behind the thick black helmet, they were sharp and seemed to never twitch or move in the slightest. When he looked into them he felt unease, as if he were staring into the eye of the Gultonk he had fought only the night before. "You slayed the Gultonk did you not?" Clayton swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat, "Yes." Panagiot leaned back crossing his arms, "How can someone such as yourself kill a creature that size? Let alone by yourself." Clayton's face fell and a wave of shame washed over him. "I didn't kill it by myself, sir, the stranger you subdued at the tavern. He cut the beast, and was able to wound it to a degree I was able to kill it." Panagiot began to circle Clayton, "So then why didn't he kill it if he was able to wound it so?" Clayton's gaze remained forward as he replied. "He wished to speak to it, he mentioned " The massive elite nodded, "So then what? You took your sword and cut the beast through?" Clayton shook his head, "No sir, I took the stranger's sword and cut the Gultonk in half." Panagiot stopped, "That is quite the feat, but that is not all that happened is it?" The lump formed in his throat again, "No sir it isn't." Panagiot leaned down to Clayton, inches away from his face, "I looked over the Gultonk and saw a holy knight's blade broken off inside of its head along with the other piece rammed into the middle of its skull." Panagiot kneeled to the chest, and as he did so he continued, "It is impressive that you were able to do that much damage to the Gultonk with such a basic weapon and on your own." A sense of pride began to fill Clayton, the tension and stress of being around an Elite Knight began to fade with each passing moment. "Thank you, sir." Clayton pushed out. "You are much too old to be an Elite, but I will see to it that you begin training at the capital. This backwater town has gotten soft and relaxed with the knights." Clayton found himself agreeing with Panagiot, a lot of what Clayton had first seen when he joined the Holy Knights had become relaxed and borderline lazy with his fellow knights. "But that just goes to show how weak those who live outside of the capital are. Before we take our leave we will see to it Umar won't take any more blows and disrespect from foul creatures again." Something in Clayton didn't sit right after he heard Panagiot say that. Clayton began to feel the ripple of worry running through his mind. Panagiot lifted the lid of the chest and began searching through the bottom. Clayton couldn't see what lay in it due to the size of Panagiot, even kneeling his size was still massive. "There we are found it." Panagiot spoke in a cheerful yet intimidating tone. Panagiot stood up and turned to Clayton, he presented a small metal badge. On it lay the crest of Umar, a Bright ruby placed in the center of a pair of golden wings. "This is a medal for your bravery and courage in the face of an enemy of Umar." Clayton snapped into formation, " Thank you sir but that isn't necessary, for the glory and protection of Umar is reward enough." An uncomfortable-sounding chuckle came from behind Panagiot's helmet. "That is the correct response to have a young knight. You continue to impress me." Panagiot took the medal and broke it in two. Clayton showed a sign of confusion. Panagiot tossed the piece to the ground and turned back to the chest. He pulled out a large book that was wrapped in a purple cloth and shut the chest. Panagiot turned to Clayton and pushed passed him almost knocking him down, Clayton attempted to get out of the way but the size and speed the Elite moved at even a slow walk was enough to move him. "Come Boy, we have work to do with the stranger." Clayton felt only confusion and walked behind the Elite. As the two made their way through the lower levels of the main office. Clayton heard the sounds of a screaming child bounce above him. The screams echoed and broke through the solid stone and wood. It was uncomfortable and made Clayton concerned about what was happening upstairs. "Do not concern yourself with that wailing. Those are sounds of a teaching moment." Clayton didn't understand what Panagiot meant by that. Before long the screams faded out and the sounds of grunts began to fill the air. Panagiot and Clayton came to a closed door, one Knight stood in front at attention. "Move", Spoke Panagiot. The Knight took a large step to the side and opened the door. Panagiot stepped through as he did so He struck the Knight knocking him to the ground. " I only told you to move not to open and door." The Knight stood up and went back to attention. The pair walked down the rows of cells to the sound of someone being beaten. With a snap of the Elite's massive fingers, flames erupted from the unlit torches casting bright light revealing every cell around them. Clayton peered into the cell the noise was coming from and saw Diomede being held up against the wall by two Knights while two more were striking him. Clayton's attention was then caught by movement in another cell. To his surprise, it was the Nesfundur he had met the night before. "I hope you are ready to give me what I want." Panagiot said as he entered the cell. The two knights stopped and stepped back from Diomede. Diomede lifted his head and spit out blood onto the ground. Panagiot's devilish smile appeared out from under his helmet as he unwrapped the book he held.
