Chapter 1 - chapter 1

I was just another 18-year-old barista working at a cozy coffee shop in downtown New York City. My dark skin contrasted sharply with my white-dyed hair as I wiped down the counter. The shop was bustling as usual, with the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee filling the air, blending with the soft hum of conversations and the clinking of cups.

As I prepared a latte, I glanced out the window and saw something that made my heart skip a beat. There was an enormous, otherworldly craft hovering in the sky. Its surface shimmered with colors I'd never seen before, casting an unsettling glow over the city. It was so massive that it seemed to block out the sun, and a sense of dread settled over me as I watched it.

Then, without warning, the craft emitted a series of blinding flashes. The intense light filled the shop, and I felt a sudden, disorienting rush. I shielded my eyes, but the brightness was overwhelming. It was as if time itself had stopped and started in the blink of an eye.

I felt like I was being pulled through a tunnel of light, and everything familiar—the coffee shop, the city—was swallowed by the brilliance. The sensation was surreal, like waking from a deep, unsettling dream.

When my senses finally came back to me, I found myself lying on the ground in an unfamiliar place. My body was stiff and aching as I slowly sat up. I was surrounded by dense, ancient forest. The city and everything I knew were nowhere to be seen. The modern world had vanished, replaced by an untouched, primordial wilderness.

The trees were enormous, with thick, gnarled trunks and a canopy that filtered the sunlight into soft, dappled patterns on the forest floor. The air was fresh and filled with the earthy scent of pine and damp soil. It was beautiful yet eerie, and a profound sense of loss gripped me as I took in the scene.

As I looked around, I saw that I wasn't alone. There were others scattered around the clearing, looking just as bewildered as I felt. A young woman with dark, curly hair sat on a fallen log, her expression a mix of confusion and fear. Nearby, an elderly man with a weathered face was carefully inspecting the ground. A teenager, looking dazed, was clutching their clothes as if trying to anchor themselves.

I got to my feet, trying to steady myself as I took in my new surroundings. The forest was alive with sounds—the distant calls of birds, the rustle of leaves, and the gentle babble of a nearby stream. It felt like stepping into another world, one that was both inviting and intimidating.

Suddenly, a shimmering distortion appeared in the air, and from it emerged a being unlike anything I'd ever seen. It was an ethereal entity with a translucent, shifting form, radiating an otherworldly glow. I knew instantly this was something beyond human understanding.

The being's voice resonated in my mind, deep and melodious. "Greetings, inhabitants of Earth. I am Xal'Tor, a representative of the Zorath. Your world has been altered."

Xal'Tor's form shifted through a spectrum of colors as it continued. "We, the Zorath, are an advanced species capable of manipulating the fundamental forces of the universe. Our purpose here is to conduct an experiment on your species."

The alien explained, "Your civilization has been erased, and Earth has been reset to a primitive state. The technology and structures you once knew are gone, replaced by a world where nature reigns supreme. This reset is part of a larger observational study to understand how humanity adapts to such drastic changes."

Xal'Tor's voice took on a clinical tone. "We have chosen to endow a fraction of your population—10%—with special abilities. These powers are intended to serve as variables in our study of evolution and adaptation. Your actions and interactions will be observed to provide insights into the nature of evolution and survival."

As Xal'Tor's form began to fade, the clearing fell into an uneasy silence. I stood there, trying to process what I had just heard. The forest around me was both alien and familiar. The trees were enormous, their bark thick and rough, and the ground was covered in ferns and mosses. Every now and then, I glimpsed distant mountains that hinted at a world untouched by human hands.

I noticed the others starting to explore their surroundings. The young woman, her initial fear giving way to curiosity, moved towards the stream that ran through the clearing. She dipped her hand into the cool, clear water, mesmerized by its clarity. The elderly man used a long branch to probe the ground, his movements slow and deliberate. The teenager, still in shock, stumbled toward a fallen log, trying to make sense of this new reality.

I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing thoughts. The forest canopy above cast intricate patterns of light and shadow on the ground, and I felt both awe and trepidation at the sight of this new world.

As Xal'Tor's presence finally dissipated, the alien's form becoming a mere shimmer in the air, I felt the enormity of the situation. The clearing remained quiet, and I could see the remnants of the modern world scattered among the overgrown vegetation—shattered glass, twisted metal, and fragments of technology. The transition from the familiar to the primordial was stark and jarring.

A mix of fear and resolve gripped me. The alien had spoken of powers and adaptation, but right now, survival was my main concern. The forest was vast and filled with both danger and opportunity. I needed to understand this new world, learn its rules, and find a way to navigate the challenges ahead.

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows through the trees, I knew the night would bring new challenges. The forest was alive with sounds—rustling leaves, distant animal calls, and the occasional snap of a twig. I took a deep breath, steeling myself for the journey ahead.

The clearing, now bathed in the soft light of dusk, seemed both inviting and ominous. I glanced around at the others, their faces reflecting the same uncertainty I felt. With a determined look at the darkening forest, I took my first steps into this new world. The alien's intervention had reshaped everything, but I was ready to face whatever lay ahead. The forest held countless mysteries, and I was prepared to uncover them.

In the stillness of the clearing, I felt a sense of purpose. The world had changed, and so had I. As night fell and the forest grew darker, I resolved to find my place in this transformed Earth and navigate the challenges that awaited me.
