Let's take a little recap of what occurred. I'm Danial Miller, the new student enrolled in Evergreen High. On my way to school, I had a run-in with Darren and Brooklyn. That encounter was only a catalyst for what was to occur later that day.
I eventually made it to school and stood in front of the prestigious Evergreen High. Like any new student, I ended up getting lost and needed someone to guide me to class. Fortunately, Brooklyn was there for the rescue and led me to Mrs. Chopthat's lesson. I found out I was sitting next to Brooklyn, which I didn't mind at all. However, after an exchange of words, Brooklyn decided she wanted to move away from me. But then The Whisper came in for the rescue and leaked a rumor about the two of us being together.
Everyone knew about it, so Brooklyn decided to sit with me for lunch to avoid any unnecessary trouble. But that didn't do any good because, as we were talking and enjoying our time, a certain Darren Winston wanted to join in on the fun. Just when I was about to leave, Darren tripped me over. That didn't sit too well with Brooklyn, and she told him off. He told Brooklyn to shut up or else he would reveal her biggest secret. After that, I said a couple of words that got under Darren's skin, which resulted in him trying to land a punch on me. But then, out of nowhere, Brooklyn stood in the way, and she got hit instead.
I took Brooklyn to the nurse's office and asked if she was okay.
"I'm fine," she said.
"What was that about anyway?" I asked.
"Sometimes he can lose his temper, which can get a little scary."
"But that is not an excuse for him to hit you."
"Hey Dan, can I tell you something?"
"Um, yeah, sure."
"Brooklyn, come inside," said Nurse Boychuck.
"I'll tell you later after school, Dan."
"Um, yeah, that's fine."
I decided to wait outside of the nurse's office until an unwanted yet familiar face showed up. Darren looked really guilty about what he had done, but nobody believes that. Everyone believes he's a woman-beater. Including me.
"Can I talk to Brooklyn?" Darren asked.
"No, you can't. She doesn't want to see you," I said in a disgusted tone.
"Look, man, I really need to talk to her."
"Well, you can come back later."
"Why don't you back up, man?"
"Wow, looks like your violent tendencies are back, aren't they?"
"You really know how to get under people's skin."
"Well, it is my specialty."
"Hahaha. You want to know what my specialty is?"
"I don't think brain-dead people like you have one, but go on."
"It's beating up lower-class imbeciles like you."
"You calling me an imbecile is ironic."
"Do you have a death wish, kid?"
"And so what if I do?"
Brooklyn came out of the nurse's office.
"Hey Dan, what is Darren doing here?"
"He was just leaving."
"You better watch your back, Dan."
"Hey Brooklyn, what are you doing tonight?"
"Sorry Dan, I don't want you to get the wrong idea, but I'm not into you."
"Okay, I understand."
Wow, I got rejected by Brooklyn? Isn't the first time we've seen someone get rejected by someone way out of their league. I went back to Brooklyn.
"Okay, how about if it isn't a date?"
"I'm listening," she said in a curious tone.
"How about if it's just two friends going out separately but together?"
"I know I might be failing English according to you, but that sounds like a date."
"Oh really? I remember saying it isn't a date at all."
"Okay, pick me up at 7."
"Alright then."
"Wait, I don't have a car."
"Okay then, I'll pick you up at 7."
"See you later, Dan."
"See you later, Brooklyn."
Wow, can you believe it? Neither can I. I scored a date with the hottest girl in school.
I ended up going back home. The nice high life of Encino quickly dwarfed my perspective of my home ground, Reseda. But I was still the same old Dan. I didn't need the rich Encino life to know my own value.
Brooklyn's house was the opposite of mine. Her house was huge. It was in a gated community, which says it all. It had seven bedrooms, six toilets, two kitchens, a swimming pool, and a destroyed household. You see, Brooklyn has had four different dads, and her real dad isn't even there. Her mother had her when she was 19, so naturally, she had a troubled childhood. The reason she is even living in a house as grand as this is due to her mom's numerous divorces.
"Hey Sophie, what are you doing here?" said Brooklyn's mom, Lola.
"Nothing much, Lola. Do you know where Brooklyn is?"
"Yeah, she's in her room. Something wrong?"
"Another WhisperWeb blast. Long story short, she was hanging out with this Daniel Miller guy."
"Danial Miller?"
"Yeah, do you know him?"
"No, why?"
"Then her boyfriend got jealous and tried to punch Dan, and Brooklyn got in the way."
"Oh, I see."
"I just want to make sure she's okay."
"B, I'm coming."
Sophie entered Brooklyn's gorgeous room. Her master bed was at least two master beds put together. The walls were painted white. The TV was at least 70 inches. It was every girl's dream room.
"Hey B, something the matter?"
"Actually, it couldn't be better."
"What happened? And don't say it has something to do with that Dan guy."
"It does, actually."
"He invited me to this not-date date."
"I don't want to know, but is that date today?"
"Um, yeah. Why, what's the problem?"
"We have that annual tea party. You can't miss out on it. It's our tradition."
"But I can't cancel, S."
"Yes, you can. His name is Dan Miller. There are plenty of Dan Millers in the world."
"Yeah, you're right. I'll tell him I canceled."
At my house:
"Hey Dan, what's up?" said Veronica.
"Nothing much. Why?"
"I looked at WhisperWeb, and it says you and Brooklyn are together."
"Um, no, but we have a not-date date."
Checks phone
Brooklyn: Sorry, but I have to take a rain check on our date.
Turns off phone
"Which just got canceled."
"Oh, I knew a girl like that wouldn't like you. Could have saved you a heartbreak."
"Listen, V, I know I'm not the prettiest guy or the strongest, and I know a girl like Brooklyn is way out of my league, but for my own sister to say that, it hurts."
"Dan, I'm sorry."
"No, don't be. You're right anyway."
"Dan, where are you going?"
"I'm going to head out. Don't come looking for me."
Well, well, well. Such a shame. I got blown off, my sister laughed at me, and now I'm heading out. All it took was Brooklyn to sever the bond between me and my family. Like any normal teenager, I went to my quiet place, away from all the drama in my life. But it doesn't matter where you go; the ghosts of your past will always come right back to you.
"Hey Dan."
"Look, Evelyn, I don't want to talk to you."
"That's not how you talk to old friends."
"You want to know what's ironic? How you always told me to never lose sight of who you are. Never let the future change your past. That's all B.S."
"Listen, Dan, I never had a choice, I—"
"You did have a choice. We all do. Brooklyn decided to cancel on me, and you decided to forget about your old life."
"Oh, Dan, I didn't know."
"Well, now you do."
Evelyn went on her phone.
WhisperWeb
Brooklyn canceled on Dan.
Turns off phone
"Well, Dan, I'm going to head out. If you want, maybe we can catch up. I'll be waiting."
"Well, looks like you'll be waiting a very long time."
It is just problems after problems.
I decided to head to my local coffee shop. It was a nice, simple place where I could sit back, relax, and see Brooklyn talking to Darren?
You got to be shitting me.
