He laughed on the other end of the phone, "Is that how you thank me?"
I didn't speak. The signal on my little pager phone was pretty bad, and static crackled through. I took the opportunity to say, "Huh? I didn't catch that. What did you say?"

I hung up and glanced at the screen, which showed the call duration: 56 seconds. I went back to sleep.
