Chapter 10
In a place like this, looking like this, this should not be, Cheng Jiayang.
I felt somewhat dazed, numbly walking towards my private room. Was I drunk? Just as I pushed the door open, I hurried back. An irresistible force drove me; I had to see if this man, drunk to the point of stupor, high on marijuana, was the exemplary figure I held in my heart.
But he was no longer there.
Cheng Jiayang
While preparing my graduation thesis, I began my internship at the Translation Bureau. As a newcomer, I attended at least two days of training a week. The content was familiar: Chinese-French translations of specialized lexicon from various social domains, exercises in foreign language shorthand, and simulated consecutive interpreting... While I had a solid foundation and study experience at one of the top universities in Paris, this was an industry where practitioners must continuously learn and improve themselves. The competition and elimination were brutal.
My brother still wasn't coming home, and my parents were still as busy as if they were busier than the President of the United States.
I lived quietly by myself. One day, unable to resist, I called Mingfang but lost my nerve when I heard her steps coming closer and hung up as her maid answered the phone.
That day, Xu Dong took me to the best nightclub in town, called "Allure." There were red lights, green wines, and young, beautiful girls tenderly nestling in people's arms—an intoxicating tender trap. But within the crowd, one's soul could feel even more alone. I stepped outside to smoke by myself, only to be discovered by Xu Dong, who hurriedly pushed me back in. Loud music, stronger drinks, under some drugged influence, I suddenly felt a liking for this place.
And so, my double life continued quietly.
In June, high tides washed over the sea, and hibiscuses bloomed all over campus.
Xu Dong finally remembered something and during lunch one day, he asked me, "What about that girl you were supposed to help me find last time? How's that going?"
He was talking about Qiao Fei.
I said, "No luck," as I put a medium-rare juicy steak in my mouth, glanced at Xu Dong staring at me, and repeated, "No luck, finding people really isn't easy."
In reality, just the day before, as a representative of outstanding students, I had just handed a certificate and award for third place in the national French test to her.
Fei's reaction was unique. She took the award from my hand with a smile and then, in front of everyone, said, "Thank you to the academy, thank you to my parents, thank you to the director and our team. I'm thrilled to win the Oscar. I love you all." Then, she put her hand on her chest, trying to contain her emotions yet unable to hide her excitement. She absolutely had the demeanor of an Oscar-winning actress.
I thought this girl was really a treasure. I was certain she was prepared for this. She knew she would achieve this. The classmates erupted into laughter, and the teachers indulgently understood the humor of this excellent student straying from the norm.
Remembering her previous comedic episodes, I was genuinely curious as to what kind of family she came from.
Xu Dong waved his hand in front of my face, "What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing."
He looked at me: "I have a favor to ask you."
"Go ahead, you're being too formal with me."
"I have a proposal that needs to be translated into French. I don't trust anyone else, could you take a look at it for me?"
