After Li Ping'an had explained where the treasure was located, he waited within the mountain stronghold. The Second-in-command brought up a chest containing both gold and silver, amounting to ten thousand taels of gold and five thousand taels of silver.
The treasure now ownerless, the chest was opened and checked thoroughly. Almost immediately, his men prepared to seize the contents, but were stopped by Li Ping'an's sharp command:
"This gold and silver are the hard-earned wealth of the people of Five Finger Mountain County. I will take two thousand taels of silver for my expenses to Chang'an, you may divide one thousand taels amongst yourselves, and the rest of the gold and silver shall go to the poor of Five Finger Mountain County as a means for you to accumulate some moral merit."
"You can't be serious, Gang Leader, we understand doing good deeds, but leaving just one thousand taels of silver for your brothers to live on, this is a bit much..."
