The Multi-Eyed Monster, also known as the Hundred-Eyed Demon Monarch, was originally a centipede spirit in the midst of secluded cultivation under the Yellow Flower Temple at Mount Pansi. He had no intention of eating Tang Seng's flesh, but after listening to the tearful complaints of his seven spider spirit sisters, he couldn't help but become angered. He then poisoned the tea, which felled Jiang Liu'er, Zhu Bajie, and the Sandy Monk.
Yuan Hong always remembered the words Sun Wukong told him. As the eldest disciple, he had to be more vigilant and cautious. Thus, he didn't rush to drink the tea and managed to avoid getting poisoned. Seeing Jiang Liu'er and the other two poisoned made him furious, so he drew his iron staff and started fighting fiercely with the Hundred-Eyed Demon Monarch.
