The Golden Bird fell into an ambush because it was careless, or rather, it underestimated the enemy. Seeing that Gao Fei and the others were only at the Golden Core Realm Cultivation, it didn't take them seriously. Caught off-guard, it fell victim to Gao Fei's trap.

The Golden Bird tumbled through the air, its face contorted in agony as it let out a wailing cry from its throat.
"Damn!" cursed Gao Fei, "We didn't throw enough Black Spheres!" Gao Fei had originally thought that five Black Spheres would be enough to kill the Golden Bird. He had never expected the Golden Bird to be so formidable that it could survive the fierce bombardment of five Black Spheres; it was truly inconceivable.
"To survive with five Black Spheres exploding inside it, it really is a miracle," Xuan Jizi said softly in Gao Fei's mind.
"Had I known this would happen, I would have thrown more Black Spheres at the time," Gao Fei lamented.
