Chapter 144 - Chapter 144: Those Who Have Been There Understand

Inside the Haotian Mirror.

After venting her anger by pinching and twisting the Immortal Emperor, Xuanwei finally jumped off his back.

"You old geezer! You still remember me? I thought you'd forgotten you even had a daughter!" Xuanwei glared at the Immortal Emperor with irritation.

"Every time I come, I have to endure this kind of torment from you. How could I dare to visit often?" The Immortal Emperor sighed lightly before turning his gaze to Xiao Fan, saying with a touch of melancholy, "So, won't you introduce us?"

As soon as the Immortal Emperor's eyes fell on him, Xiao Fan stood up straight, his posture becoming rigid with a hint of embarrassment. He couldn't help but feel that the Immortal Emperor's gaze was a bit odd. Considering what had transpired between him and Xuanwei, it was no wonder the Immortal Emperor looked at him that way. Their first meeting had been anything but dignified.

Noticing Xiao Fan's uneasy demeanor, Xuanwei stepped in front of him, glaring at the Immortal Emperor. "You old geezer! This is my master, Xiao Fan. Aren't you going to introduce yourself? You're so rude!"

"You're embarrassing me!" Xuanwei scolded him coldly, then turned to Xiao Fan and whispered, "Master, don't worry. I've got your back. This old geezer won't dare to bully you."

Xiao Fan was at a loss for words.

It wasn't that he was afraid of the Immortal Emperor bullying him; he was just uncomfortable with the awkwardness of their first meeting. Besides, the Immortal Emperor was a senior, a figure of immeasurable stature compared to him. It wasn't proper for a junior to expect a senior to introduce themselves first.

If Xuanwei continued, what kind of person would that make him?

Stepping forward, Xiao Fan respectfully cupped his hands and said, "This junior, Xiao Fan, greets the Immortal Emperor."

As soon as he spoke, Xuanwei frowned with displeasure and pulled Xiao Fan back, saying, "You're my master, and you're on equal footing with this old geezer. Why are you being so respectful?"

Xuanwei was genuinely unhappy. Her master was bowing and scraping before this old geezer, who now had every reason to feel smug.

Sure enough, the Immortal Emperor's face lit up with a broad smile.

With a hearty laugh, he said, "Xuanwei is right. Since you're her master, there's no need to be so formal."

Though his words were polite, the tone was undeniably filled with pride.

Seeing this, Xuanwei grew even more frustrated, feeling that Xiao Fan had embarrassed her. Stomping her foot angrily, she turned on her heel and stormed off without looking back.

"Sigh…" The Immortal Emperor sighed softly as he watched her leave. "This girl has indeed suffered all these years. It's no wonder she's so resentful towards me."

"Forgive my boldness, but may I ask, Immortal Emperor, why did you have Xuanwei guard the forbidden zone of the Immortal Realm?" Xiao Fan asked with a respectful yet firm tone.

Though Xuanwei had left in a huff, leaving him to face the Immortal Emperor alone, Xiao Fan found himself feeling less uneasy. The strained relationship between Xuanwei and the Immortal Emperor seemed to stem from this very decision. If he could understand the reason, perhaps he could help mend their relationship.

The Immortal Emperor didn't respond immediately. Instead, he gave Xiao Fan a long, deep look. Though the gaze was calm, it exerted immense pressure on Xiao Fan.

Seeing Xiao Fan's nervous reaction, the Immortal Emperor suddenly chuckled.

"You brat, I haven't even settled the score for how you were bullying my daughter earlier!" The Immortal Emperor's voice was playful, but the underlying meaning was clear.

Xiao Fan's face flushed with embarrassment as he quickly tried to explain, "Immortal Emperor, please don't misunderstand. We were just…"

Halfway through, Xiao Fan found himself at a loss for words. How was he supposed to explain this? Should he admit that he was catering to Xuanwei's peculiar preferences? It didn't seem right to say such things in front of her father.

"Enough, I've been around long enough to understand," the Immortal Emperor said with a knowing smile.

Xiao Fan sighed in resignation. It seemed there was no clearing up this misunderstanding.

"Since Xuanwei doesn't welcome me, I'll take my leave," the Immortal Emperor said, giving Xiao Fan a meaningful glance. "I'll be counting on you to take care of her from now on."

As suddenly as he had appeared, the Immortal Emperor was gone.

Only after his departure did Xiao Fan realize that the Immortal Emperor had skillfully avoided answering his question, leaving Xiao Fan deep in thought. Why couldn't the reason for Xuanwei's guardianship be revealed? Was there some hidden secret?

It seemed he had asked a question that shouldn't have been asked.

Shaking off his doubts, Xiao Fan refocused on a more pressing issue.

For the next few days, Xuanwei ignored Xiao Fan entirely, feeling that her master had embarrassed her in front of the Immortal Emperor. Despite all his attempts to appease her, she remained cold and distant.

Faced with this situation, Xiao Fan felt utterly helpless. Some methods he didn't want to resort to, but he was running out of options.

"Insolent disciple, are you deaf? Did you not hear your master speaking to you?" Xiao Fan scolded sharply.

He thought this approach might work. But to his surprise, Xuanwei didn't react with her usual joy. Instead, she suddenly started crying.

"Master, you're bullying me…" Xuanwei whimpered, tears brimming in her eyes.

Xiao Fan was taken aback. This was entirely unexpected. Could it be that Xuanwei had suddenly returned to normal?

If so, Xiao Fan couldn't help but feel relieved.

Gently wiping away her tears, Xiao Fan softly said, "It's my fault, I won't be stern with you anymore."

"That won't do!" Xuanwei quickly protested, forgetting her tears.

"Uh…" Xiao Fan rubbed his forehead in frustration. Perhaps he had been overthinking things.

Still, Xuanwei had finally returned to her usual self, even if that "usual self" was far from typical. But at least it was familiar.

The days passed uneventfully, and Xiao Fan couldn't help but wonder if he was destined to remain here forever. While staying with Xuanwei wasn't unpleasant, he couldn't shake the feeling of the power within the forbidden zone calling out to him. Though he had abandoned the idea of seeking out the source of that power, he couldn't deny his curiosity.

Perhaps the next time he encountered the Immortal Emperor, he could ask if he knew anything about it.

One day, as Xiao Fan accompanied Xuanwei by a pond, digging in the mud, it all started when Xuanwei mentioned that his current face was too ugly and she wanted to reshape it. Xiao Fan agreed wholeheartedly and even drew a portrait for Xuanwei based on his original appearance. Though he didn't have high hopes for Xuanwei's skills, he figured it was worth a try.

"Why are these lotus flowers withered?" Xiao Fan remarked casually, noticing the wilted lotuses in the pond. He didn't dwell on it, as everything in the world had its time to die. Still, it was the first time he had seen withered plants since coming to the Immortal Realm, which made him mention it.

Xuanwei, standing beside him, suddenly froze, staring intently at the wilted lotus flower.
