Chapter 16 - Alex's reality check

At Sarah's house, her maid approached her with a sly grin. ''Madam, our plan worked. Alex broke up with Betty.''

Sarah's eyes lit up with excitement. ''Wow! What wonderful news you share with me.'' She rubbed her hands together, eager to move on to the next step. ''Then we can carry out our next plan. Hahaahaaa...''

Two days earlier, at Sofia's home, Sarah had paid a visit. ''Sofia, I heard that Scarlett is pregnant. Is it true?'' she asked, her voice laced with false concern.

Sofia nodded, her eyes shining with happiness. ''Yes, you heard right. My sister is pregnant.''

Sarah feigned excitement. ''Oh, congratulations, Sofia! Oh, right, I also heard that Mr. Joey is your boyfriend.''

Sofia blushed, her cheeks flushing with pride. ''Yes, you're right. I love Joey.''

Sarah's expression turned serious. ''But Sofia, did you know that Betty was seducing Mr. Joey?'' She pulled out a stack of photos from her bag, edited to make it look like Betty was flirting with Joey. Sofia's eyes widened in anger as she took the photos of Sarah.

The next day, Sarah returned to Sofia's home, a sly grin spreading across her face. ''I have an idea. Why don't you threaten Betty to meet Clark?''

Sofia's eyes narrowed, her mind working with the plan. ''You're right, Sarah. That's exactly what I'll do.''

And with that, the two women continued to scheme and manipulate, their plans for Betty and Alex's downfall already in motion.

In the present day, at the company, Mitchell, Alex's assistant, approached him with a discreet message. ''Sir, someone will come to meet you.''

Alex looked up from his work, his eyes narrowing slightly. ''Who is coming to see me?''

Before Mitchell could respond, Betty walked in, a tentative smile on her face. ''I have come to meet you, Alex.''

Alex's expression turned cold, his voice firm. ''Why are you here, Ms. Betty?''

Betty held out a lunch box, her eyes hopeful. ''I brought you a lunch box. I made lunch for you.''

Alex took the lunch box, his movements stiff. ''Why did you bring a lunch box for me?'' He didn't bother to hide his skepticism.

Betty's smile faltered, but she pressed on. ''I wanted to make amends, Alex. I think you misunderstood me, and I want to clear things up.''

Alex's eyes flashed with annoyance. ''What did you mean, Ms. Betty? You think a simple lunch box can fix everything? I will tell you tomorrow that we are not lovers now. I don't love you.'' His words were harsh, and he emphasized them by tossing the lunch box into the trash can beside his desk.

The sound of the lunch box hitting the bottom of the can was loud in the silence that followed. Betty's face fell, her eyes welling up with tears. She knew she had been rebuffed, and Alex's rejection stung.

Two days after the tense encounter with Betty, Alex was sitting in his office when Mitchell, his assistant, approached him. ''Sir, Clark Johnson has come to meet you.''

Alex nodded, curious about the unexpected visit. ''Yes, please bring him here.''

Clark entered the office, and Mitchell discreetly excused herself to attend to her work. Clark extended a hand, and Alex shook it, intrigued by the stranger's presence.

''Nice to meet you, Mr. Alex Wilson,'' Clark said with a smile.

''Nice to meet you too, Mr. Clark,'' Alex replied, his eyes narrowing slightly. ''Why are you here today?''

Clark hesitated, his expression serious. ''Actually, Mr. Alex, are you Ms. Betty's boyfriend?''

Alex's eyes widened in surprise. ''No, don't misunderstand me. We are just friends.''

Clark's eyes locked onto Alex's, his gaze intense. ''So, Ms. Betty didn't tell you that she loved you?''

Alex's mind raced as he processed Clark's words. ''What did you say? Betty loves me?'' He felt a pang of guilt and regret. ''But didn't she meet you three days before for marriage?''

Clark chuckled, his expression relaxed. ''What are you saying, Mr. Alex? We are just friends, and I already have a girlfriend.''

Alex's thoughts whirled as he tried to piece together the events. He remembered the encounter with Betty in the office, her tears and her words. He realized that he had misjudged her, and his heart sank with regret.

Three days earlier, Betty had met Clark, her eyes red from crying. ''Clark, I only came here because my sister came to me. I don't love you,'' she had said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Clark had listened attentively, his expression kind. ''Relax, Ms. Betty, I already have a girlfriend. But can you tell me who you love?''

Betty's eyes had welled up again, her voice cracking. ''I love Alex Wilson. He is the CEO of SK company. I don't know if he loves me or not. But I just want to confess to him.''

Clark's eyes had softened, his voice gentle. ''So why did you come here?''

Betty had taken a deep breath, her words tumbling out. ''Because if I didn't come here, my sister would have closed the orphanage. The orphanage is a family in which I stayed for eight years.''

Clark's expression had turned sympathetic, his voice reassuring. ''Alright then, can we stay as friends?''

Betty had smiled, her eyes shining with gratitude. ''Of course.''

Present day, Clark finished his explanation, his eyes serious. ''So, I saw you were angry with Ms. Betty in the streets. So, I have come here to clear the misunderstanding. So now I have to go.''

As Clark left, Alex slumped back in his chair, his mind reeling with regret. ''So, I really misunderstood Betty. I didn't listen to her explanation. I am so stupid. She loves me, but I broke her heart. Damn it.''

Alex's eyes dropped, his gaze fixed on the floor, as he realized the gravity of his mistake. He had let his pride and ego cloud his judgment, and now he had lost the chance to be with the woman who truly loved him.

Alex's phone rang, breaking the silence in his office. He picked it up, his voice firm. ''Hello?''

''Alex, can you come home now?'' Susan, his aunt, asked, her voice laced with concern.

Alex's brow furrowed. ''Alright, aunt. What's going on?''
