Chapter 22 - Masked

After killing the last attunement master, the place he had to go was clear. He would finally bring blood to Fort Merit. He was getting closer to his goal. Finding the island of the Summer Company shouldn't be too difficult.

He continued to roam the Songseeker Wilds in search of someone he could ask. While wandering around, he saw a small child sitting under a tree near a cave.

-What do you know about the island of the Summer Company?

-...

The little child seemed quite frightened by Argus's appearence. When Argus asked his question again, the child screamed and started to run away. Argus, not following him, continued to roam the Songseeker Wilds in the hope of finding someone else. Before long, he saw a monk cultivating on top of a rock and decided to ask him. The monk noticed Argus's presence before Argus even arrived.

-I know your presence here means nothing good, what do you wish for? What must I do to not see your face again in this place?

-How can I get to the island of the Summer Company?

-Board your ship and follow the passages. After passing through the second passage, sail east. It shouldn't take you too long to get there.

-Thank you.

-...

Argus boarded his ship and left Songseeker Wilds for good. It took him about an hour to pass through the first gate. After a total of three hours of travel, he saw the Island of the Summer Company.

Since it was very late, he decided to stay on a nearby small island before going there. After a good night's sleep, he woke up with the first light of the sun. He boarded his ship again. About twenty minutes later, he arrived at the island.

It was a meeting point for traders. The area was filled with guards. Argus asked one of the guards about the location of the attunement master on the island.

-Where exactly is the attunement master on this island?

The guard was scared of Argus's appearance, which was evident in his voice.

-Are you asking about Lord Funke? He should be lodging in the inn.

-Thank you.

Instead of going straight to the inn, Argus first, decided to see what the traders were selling. He had some money left from previous journeys and hoped to find something nice.

While wandering around the market, a mask caught his eye. It wasn't pleasant that even peaceful people were afraid of him. So wearing a mask was good for not only to hide his identity but also to prevent people from being afraid of him.

-How much for the mask over there?

-Are you asking for that mask? Uh… No one has wanted it since I started this business. It seems to repel people trying to get it, so I don't sell it for money anymore. You can have it if you want, but I don't take responsibility for any trouble it might cause you.

-I see. Thank you.

After taking the mask, just as he was about to put it on his face, Dreadstar spoke again.

-This mask is destined for you... Once you put it on, it shall end your eternal hunger and thirst but, you cannot take it off again. Will you be able to accept its weight?

Argus confidently put on the mask. The mask was now a part of him. He could feel it sticking to his face. The only thing visible from the mask were Argus's glowing crimson eyes. Perhaps even more terrifying than before, this mask was making Argus look intimidating. After putting on his mask, he wandered around the market a little more.
