********************TWO MONTHS LATER*****************
"Wow. That was a rush!"I raved feeling the rush of excitement from yet another successful mission. "Tell me about it. " Maya agreed. "Hey how about we go out to celebrate on me? " I suggested. "Sure. " the rest chorused. "Great! I'll meet you guys at our usual spot at 7:00 for ice cream but right now I need to go report to Agent Grumps.". Matthew frowned before quickly changing his expression and nodding in agreement with the rest. What was that about? I turned away from them confused as I headed down the hall. Agent grumps was no other person than my uncle. Obviously that's not his actual code name, we just call him that because he's grumpy most of the time. I stood in front of the tall glass door and knocked.
"Who is it?" His croaky voice sounded from inside the room, "Uncle it's me- Andrea." "Come in.". Having received permission to come in, I pushed down the door handle and pushed the door open, entering the room. "Andrea, how many times do I have to tell you not to call me uncle when we're at work." My uncle scolded, not once looking away from the documents he was holding. "Sorry sir I forgot and besides there's barely anyone here." I said feeling semi-apologetic. "Never the less Andrea you can't keep forgetting everything; You're a spy so act like one." He reprimanded. Since I'm already used to him talking to people, most especially me like that, his tone and choice of words didn't bother me much.
"Do you have something important to say or are you just going to stand there?" He snapped. "Oh, pardon me sir. I'm here to report that Operation Strife was successful. We retrieved all that was required of us and have submitted it all to Comander Byles." I reported. "Great and no one saw you right?" "Affirmative. No one saw us." I replied. "Good. You may now leave.".I turned around and exited the room bumping into Matthew on my way out. "Hey, Matt you coming over today?" I asked. "Nope. I've got some stuff to take care of but I'll see you later today." He replied. "Okay." I said as I left to go meet up with Maya and Luca feeling a bit disappointed, I really did want Mathew to come over; I needed to speak to him about how sus he's been behaving.
"Hey guys." I called as I approached them in the lobby of the organisation. "Oh hey bestie" Maya called back "We're still hanging out at your place right?". "Nah, I'm pretty beat. I think I'll just take a nap besides, we'll still meet at Wally's right?" I asked feeling unsure of literally everything. "Of course. I can't miss a free meal where you're paying" Maya said popping a chip into her mouth. I giggled "Come on Maya we'll drop you off."
*****************AT THE RESTAURANT*************
"Hey, hey, hey there's my four favourite people. What can I get you?" Clyde, the sever asked smiling at us warmly. "Just our usuals." Maya said in her usual sassy-flirty tone. "Done and done. Jerome here will escort you to a table and your food will be brought to your table once ready." Clyde said with huge smiles gesturing to a sturdy looking man in his mid 30s. "Thanks Clyde" I said returning a warm smile. "Right this way." Jerome said as he led us towards a table.
We all sat at the table with Luca, Maya and I deep into
conversation while Matthew just stayed on his phone seeming distant. *Ring* *Ring* Luca's phone rang rather loudly. "Sorry ladies, I gotta take this." Luca said before excusing himself from the table. And this is when things started to get weird. Maya just stopped talking and slumped back in her chair. After which, she began twirling her hair which is something she only does when she's nervous or hiding something but why would she be nervous, Luca's gone and it's only Matthew and I that were there with her.
That's when I remembered Matthew, he'd been acting weird all day. There had to be something going on and I have to find out what it is. I glanced at both Matthew and Maya and that was when I realised that they've been communicating with some kind of secret code this whole time. Why did they have a secret code that I didn't know about? I thought we were all best friends but I guess I was wrong cause best friends don't keep secrets from each other and they have a whole secret language. I eyed them suspiciously trying to somehow guess or figure out what they were talking about but I guess Maya caught on when she caught me staring because she and Matthew suddenly stopped communicating.
'Uggh' I'm so sick of this, of everything; it hurt to see my friends keep things from me and have a conversation in my presence without acknowledging my presence, you know? "Excuse me." I said as calmly as I could at this moment "I need to use the rest room, I'll be right back." I continued not waiting for their response, I turned back and sashyed just to show sass. I entered the rest room and began to pace thinking of ways to get Maya and Matthew to tell me what the hell was going on. I quickly washed my face and decided to just ask them what was going on. I grabbed a towel and dried my face before exiting.
Just as luck would have it, I bumped into Matthew just outside the door. I took a few steps back and composed myself before talking. "Matthew, what's wrong? And don't you dare lie to me and say nothings wrong cause I've known you long enough to know when something is bothering you." I ranted. "I'm actually here to talk to you about it." Matthew said. "You've been acting off all week and it's been worse since today and now Maya's acting weird and you both are keeping secrets from me. I mean you guys even have a secret language that i doubt Luca knows. I just can't believe...". I stopped talking feeling I'd missed something.
"Let's rewind, what did you say before?" I asked puzzled. Matthew sighed, "If you want the truth, I'll tell you everything.". 'Wait what?! I mean I wanted the truth but this was way too easy. I guess it made sense why i bumped into him infront of the women's room of all places'. "Well of course I want the truth, haven't you been listening to anything I've been saying?" I retorted. Matthew nervously scratched his head giving me an apologetic smile before talking. "Fine here's the truth."
