Chapter 18 - The World Map

Kazu and Nozue meandered through the dense forest, their path leading them to a tranquil clearing. The sun filtered through the canopy above, casting a gentle, golden light on the ground. They discovered a broad tree with a sprawling canopy, providing a perfect spot for a rest. With a sigh of relief, they settled beneath its protective shade.

Kazu, eyes fixed on the quest paper in Nozue's hands, broke the comfortable silence. "What does the quest say, Nozue?"

Nozue unfolded the creased paper and began to read aloud, "It says, 'Help the laborers find food for the whole day. The reward will be given by the chief of the workers.'"

Kazu raised an eyebrow, considering the implications. "So, it means any kind of food? For an entire day?"

Nozue nodded, her expression thoughtful. "Seems like it."

Kazu's stomach growled in protest, causing Nozue to chuckle softly. "Speaking of food... I'm getting hungry. Let's eat first. Over there, under the tree."

"Yeah, I'm hungry too," Nozue agreed, already pulling out her own provisions.

With a fluid motion, Kazu accessed his "Item Space" skill. A moment later, a variety of food appeared before them. They sat cross-legged on the grass, their meal spread out between them as they began to eat.

As they savored the food, Nozue's thoughts wandered. "Kazu, I've been thinking. Do you think we could store large items with that skill?"

Kazu, in the midst of handing her a piece of bread, paused to consider. "Like what?"

"Like big animals," Nozue replied, taking the offered food with a grateful smile.

Kazu shook his head slightly, unsure. "I haven't tried it yet, but the description says it only works with non-living things."

Nozue's eyes lit up with a spark of inspiration. "Ah, I see. Well, I have an idea."

Kazu's curiosity was piqued. "What's your idea, Nozue?"

"How about we look for monsters that the laborers can eat?" Nozue suggested, her excitement evident.

Kazu considered this for a moment before shaking his head. "Maybe we should ask their chief first about what kind of food they actually need."

"Good point. Let's finish eating first," Nozue agreed, tucking into her meal with renewed appetite.

Kazu took another bite, his eyes lighting up as he praised her cooking. "You're really good at this, Nozue! It's like the food our mother, Rosalia, used to make."

Nozue blushed slightly, her cheeks warming under the compliment. "It's nothing, really."

Kazu leaned back, a thoughtful expression on his face. "I've got another idea, but let's consult the chief first."

Nozue looked at him with interest. "What's your idea?"

"How about you cook for the laborers?" Kazu proposed, a grin spreading across his face.

Nozue's eyes brightened with enthusiasm. "That's a fantastic idea! Let's do it if they agree."

Kazu's smile widened. "Perfect!"

With their meal finished and their plans set, Kazu and Nozue stood up and prepared to continue their journey. The promise of helping the laborers and potentially securing a reward motivated them as they set off towards their next destination, ready to tackle the challenges that lay ahead.

Kazu and Nozue walked through the forest, making their way toward a small clearing where the laborers were working. The dense trees allowed only patches of sunlight to reach the ground, but the path was clear enough. They soon arrived at a bustling campsite where workers were hard at work. In the center stood a large tent, clearly the chief's headquarters.

Approaching the tent, Kazu spoke to one of the guards stationed outside. "We're here for the quest. We need to speak with the chief."

The guard nodded and went inside the tent. A few moments later, a tall man with a rugged build and a serious demeanor emerged. He introduced himself as Chief Balthar.

"I'm Chief Balthar. How can I assist you?" he asked in a deep voice.

Kazu stepped forward. "We're here to help find food for your workers. We'd like to know what kind of food you need."

Chief Balthar's expression softened slightly. "We need food that's filling and gives the workers energy for a full day's work. We've had trouble getting enough recently. Large game meat would be ideal."

Nozue glanced at Kazu, then spoke up. "We were thinking of hunting or gathering food that can be cooked. Is there a specific type of monster or food the workers prefer?"

The chief considered this for a moment. "Large game meat is always appreciated. If you can provide that, it would be very helpful."

Kazu had an idea. "If we gather and prepare the food, would you let Nozue cook for the workers? He's skilled in cooking and it might help lift their spirits."

Chief Balthar looked intrigued. "Cooking for the workers? That's a generous offer. If you bring the food and prepare it, I see no reason why not. It might even boost their morale."

"Perfect!" Kazu said with a smile. "We'll start gathering food and come back soon."

Chief Balthar nodded in agreement. "Good luck with your hunt. The workers will appreciate it."

With their plan set, Kazu and Nozue ventured back into the forest. The terrain was thick with foliage, but they pressed on. Kazu kept his eyes sharp for large animals, while Nozue searched for edible plants and herbs.

After several hours, they came upon a group of large beasts grazing in a meadow. They carefully strategized their approach and successfully brought down one of the creatures. They began preparing the meat for transport, ensuring it was preserved and ready for cooking.

As the sun began to set, they returned to the camp with their haul. Chief Balthar met them with an approving nod and led Nozue to the cooking area.

Kazu watched with satisfaction as Nozue started cooking. The aroma of the meal soon filled the air, drawing the attention of the workers. They gathered around eagerly, their tired faces lighting up at the sight of the food.

As the workers enjoyed their hearty meal, Kazu felt a deep sense of accomplishment. Their hard work had made a difference, and the atmosphere in the camp was noticeably more cheerful.

Kazu and Nozue ventured into the forest with a clear mission: gather food to support the laborers at the camp. The dense canopy above filtered the sunlight into patches of warmth on the forest floor. The air was crisp and cool, filled with the sounds of rustling leaves and distant bird calls.

As they moved through the woods, Kazu glanced at Nozue. "Any signs of large game?"

Nozue shook his head, eyes scanning the underbrush. "Not yet. We should push toward the clearing."

Kazu nodded and suddenly vanished with his Blink skill. Moments later, he reappeared at the edge of a sunlit clearing where a group of large, horned beasts grazed. He crouched behind a tree, signaling Nozue to come closer.

Nozue approached quietly and looked toward the clearing. "I see them. What's the plan?"

"I'll create a distraction," Kazu said, adjusting his grip on his daggers. "Can you make the ground slippery with your ice magic?"

Nozue nodded, raising his hands and murmuring an incantation. A shimmering layer of ice spread across the ground in front of the beasts, making the surface slick and treacherous.

Kazu, now hidden in the shadows, activated his Dash skill. With a burst of speed, he closed in on the beasts and prepared for his next move.

"Ready when you are," Kazu whispered.

Nozue responded by casting a Water Wave spell. A powerful surge of water flowed over the ice, making it even more unstable. The beasts struggled to keep their footing, their movements becoming erratic.

Kazu used this opportunity to strike. He dashed forward with his Dash skill and then Blink to appear right beside one of the larger beasts. His daggers flashed as he aimed for precise, vulnerable spots. The beast roared in surprise and staggered on the icy ground.

Seeing the situation, Nozue kept a watchful eye on the surroundings. "Any other movement?"

Kazu continued his assault, his strikes swift and accurate. With a final, decisive blow, the beast fell, defeated.

Instead of immediately starting to prepare the meat, Kazu took a moment to utilize his Item Space skill. He concentrated, and a shimmering, ethereal space opened before him. With a smooth motion, he stored the carcass of the beast in the Item Space, ensuring it would be preserved in a state suitable for later processing.

Nozue watched with interest. "Nice use of the Item Space skill. That'll make transport a lot easier."

Kazu nodded. "Let's head back to camp."

As they returned to the camp, the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the landscape. Upon arrival, Chief Balthar and the laborers were gathered around, their spirits lifted by the aroma of cooking food.

Kazu approached the chief and the workers, who looked at him with curiosity. He raised his hand and, with a flourish, summoned the large beast from his Item Space. The beast's carcass appeared in a shimmer of light, landing heavily on the ground.

The sight left everyone in stunned silence. Chief Balthar's eyes widened in disbelief. "What… where did that come from?"

A murmur of astonishment spread through the laborers. "Did he just pull that from thin air?" one worker whispered.

Kazu smiled, noticing their reaction. "Yes, it's a special skill of mine. I stored it in a space where it's kept fresh."

Chief Balthar's amazement was quickly replaced by curiosity. He approached Kazu and Nozue with an interested look. "That's an impressive feat. But I must ask—how did you manage to take down such a formidable beast?"

Kazu and Nozue exchanged a glance before Kazu spoke. "We used a combination of tactics. I created a distraction with my Blink skill, allowing me to get close to the beast. Nozue used his ice magic to make the ground slippery, which made it difficult for the beast to maneuver."

Nozue added, "I also used a Water Wave spell to enhance the effect of the ice, making the ground even more unstable. This helped Kazu get in close and deal the decisive blows."

Chief Balthar nodded thoughtfully. "That's quite a strategy. Most would struggle against such a beast without the right preparation. Your teamwork and skills are impressive."

The laborers, having overheard the explanation, murmured in awe. "No wonder they managed to take down such a beast," one of them said. "Their skills are extraordinary."

Kazu and Nozue smiled at the praise. "We're glad to help," Kazu said. "The workers deserve a good meal."

As Nozue began cooking the meat, the rich aroma soon filled the camp, drawing the workers closer. Their faces brightened as they gathered around the feast, the atmosphere shifting from exhaustion to cheerfulness.

One of the workers approached Kazu with a beaming smile. "This meal is exactly what we needed. Thank you both for your hard work."

Kazu returned the smile. "We're happy to help. Enjoy the meal."

As the workers enjoyed their hearty dinner, Kazu and Nozue exchanged a satisfied glance. The camp's mood had lifted, and their successful hunt, combined with their impressive skills, had strengthened their sense of accomplishment and camaraderie.

As night fell, the camp was filled with the lively chatter of workers enjoying their meal. Kazu and Nozue stood nearby, satisfied with their successful task.

Chief Balthar approached them with a pleased expression. "Kazu, Nozue, you've done an excellent job. The workers are very grateful for your help."

Kazu and Nozue smiled. "We're happy to help," Kazu said.

Chief Balthar reached into his pouch and pulled out a rolled-up parchment and a small pouch of coins. He handed them to Kazu and Nozue. "As a token of our appreciation, I'm giving you this world map and 2,000 silvers."

Kazu accepted the map with curiosity and carefully unrolled it. His eyes widened as he took in the detailed, expansive chart. "This is a world map!" he exclaimed. "I can see so many places—look, there's Druzka!"

Nozue leaned in, equally amazed. "And there's Harandur and Soradia! I've heard stories about these places, but I've never seen them on a map."

Kazu's excitement was palpable as he traced his finger over various regions. "This map covers so much land. It's incredible to see everything laid out like this."

Chief Balthar smiled at their reaction. "I'm glad you find it useful. This map will help you navigate through unfamiliar territories and plan your travels."

Nozue looked up from the map, impressed. "This will definitely be a valuable tool for our journey. Thank you, Chief Balthar."

Chief Balthar nodded. "If you ever need more assistance or have other quests in mind, don't hesitate to return. You've proven yourselves as excellent helpers."

As Chief Balthar walked away, the workers gathered around Kazu and Nozue, expressing their thanks. "You two did a fantastic job," one worker said. "We'll spread the word about your skills."

Feeling appreciated, Kazu and Nozue packed the world map and the pouch of silvers. Kazu continued to marvel at the map, eagerly pointing out various locations to Nozue.

With a final wave to the camp, Kazu and Nozue set off into the night, their excitement about the world map and the promise of new adventures fueling their journey.
