In the rubble of a once lavish town, people ran about in search of safety. Fire razed properties and their owners, unlucky people were frozen solid. Large beasts unlike any known kind fell, destroying half the land and ending the lives of its people.
Loud cries of agony, and fear, and screams for help resounded around the place as people struggled to avoid the clash of magic casters. Loud rumbles of thunder reverberated through the air, scaring the animals around causing them to run into people and topple over them.
Strong wind currents blew through the town's ruins. Three men - one with two babies in his arms who were crying incessantly- and a woman, whose body floated in the air closely beside them, ran in an opposite direction from the rest of the people. Where they were fleeing to, they didn't know yet, but they had to leave.
"Look at what you have done to these innocent people! YOU KILLED THEM ALL!" A man yelled with a spiteful tone as he walked towards the three men. Hearing his voice, the trio stopped in their path at once and glared at him.
Dragging two chains that held human heads across the ground, the man stopped a few feet away from the three that wished to escape. His lips formed a smirk while he had his head down.
Lifting up the chains, he made the heads visible to the men. "Do you remember them?" He asked calmly. The wind blew back his long black hair, revealing his silver glowing eyes.
"You devil!" One of the three men spat looking at the horrified expressions on the faces of the bodiless heads.
Their comrades were no more.
"Devil? Hahahahaha!" He laughed sinisterly. "There's no one more fitting to bear that name than the man standing next to you." The enemy replied.
His smirk grew into an evil grin. He glanced in the direction of the man with the babies in his hold.
"I hear that's what they call you now." He snickered.
"It would be lovely to watch the devil fall at my feet." The floating woman's body began floating towards him. Her body slowly got covered in silver fog.
"Let go of her, you bastard!" The one called 'the devil' yelled, and the enemy was immediately engulfed in flames. The woman's body fell to the ground.
There was no reaction from the burning man, instead he laughed in the midst of the flames.
"Agnar, when will you understand the simple truth? You can't hurt me." The man said with a devious grin as he stepped out of the fire unscathed. Parts of his clothes had burnt off, but he didn't mind it.
'The devil', Agnar, was filled with fury and his eyes began glowing silver, just like that of the enemy. He then felt a sharp pain in his chest and fell to his knees.
"I should have killed you when I had the chance." Agnar gritted his teeth, as he looked up at the man whom he loathed very much.
"You really should have, but you've always been foolish. Learn on this night that your actions have consequences and I am here to deliver them," the enemy said. He placed one hand on his chest with a smile on his face.
"Let me handle this." The man by Agnar's side said and dashed forward.
"No, Zack, you can't!" Agnar tried to stop him, but his friend had already stepped forward. "Stop your father, Demas!" He yelled at the other man, who seemed frozen.
Demas was shaken to his core.
They had fared well against the men sent after them by the enemy, but he himself was on a different level in terms of power.
'If only, if only Agnar was at his best right now. If only I can do something, I, I can't even move.' He was entrapped by fear.
"We will all die here, we will all die, we will all..." Demas kept mumbling, staring at his father who had now activated his full ability.
Zack's eyes now had a blue glow and he stuck his staff to the ground. His body turned into fog and spread around the place aiming for the enemy who just watched him and shook his head slightly.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk." The enemy shook his head. "You stand by him even after what he did to your sister? You should have remained a writer." He sighed pitifully and stretched forth his arm.
The fog that was Zack, that had spread began reverting to its human body. No matter how hard Zack tried to stop it, he couldn't.
In no time, Zack was back to his human form and his body was being pulled towards the enemy. Unsheathing his sword, the enemy slashed at Zack. From the crown of his head, the sword sliced through him like butter, splitting him into two.
"F-father?" Demas fell to his knees and placed his hands over his face. "Why am I still unable to do anything but watch? Useless. Useless." Tears welled up in his eyes.
"You can self-loathe later. For now, take them." Agnar said and placed the babies in front of Demas.
"I will end this."
Demas looked up at Agnar who staggered to his feet with one arm on his chest. His breathing was unsteady and he was losing strength by the minute but he would still fight even if he died trying.
Before Demas could say anything, a portal opened beneath him and Demas found himself in another place entirely. He looked at the babies in front of him and held them in his arms.
His mind was still a mess. The demise of their comrades, the death of his father the most, sickened him. He sat on the ground and rested his back on a tree.
"So are you ready to die now?" The enemy questioned Agnar with a smirk.
"First, here's your attack back." He said and a large wall of fire went for Agnar who readied himself. Before it got to him, it was sent back in an instant.
This time, the enemy screamed in pain. The flames were burning him. Although, he could control it and move it off his skin, it still surrounded him. Slowly fighting back.
"How annoying," he thought.
In front of Agnar was the lady whose body had been floating beside them.
"Angel? You shouldn't, you need to..."
"You need to leave, Agnar. Take care of our sons." She spoke softly, cutting him off.
"I can't leave you here. He will be back!"
"Right now Agnar, you can't even cause a scratch on his skin, but I can." She continued, ignoring his words.
"You promised that our sons would be brought up well enough to face the enemies. If you die, who will help them? We both know I can't. I am but a dying woman. Only you Agnar, only you can guide them."
"Angel, I can't..."
"I can cast a spell to shield you from him." she said, cutting him off again as she stared at a silhouette of a person slowly walking out of the flames.
"You can cast a spell to shield us all. I can't leave you here, Angel!" Agnar argued.
"Listen to me for once and leave now." The glow of her beautiful green eyes, though weak, never faded. Her snow-white hair fell over her face as she looked at her husband whose shoulders fell in defeat.
Strong waves of energy began gathering around her as she looked away from him and to the man she was meant to hold back.
"I will return for you." Agnar said and opened a portal beneath his feet. He sank into it slowly as he watched his wife about to face off his enemy.

Author here,
This is a rewrite of a book I've been working on. It's actually my first book and may seem slow paced at the beginning but it's all part of the build up. I'm just excited to share my work. Oh, and if you like it, please add to your library.
