Chereads / The Cursed Magus / Chapter 4 - 4

Chapter 4 - 4

The years passed, and as Kael grew older, the intensity of his father's violence increased. Joren's drunken rages became more frequent and more unpredictable, casting a long shadow over the household. Each night, the family lived in fear of what might set him off, walking on eggshells to avoid triggering his wrath.

Kael had grown accustomed to reading the signs of his father's impending outbursts. The smell of alcohol on his breath, the slurring of his words, the way his eyes would glaze over—all were indicators that trouble was brewing. Kael would quickly usher Liliana and Roan out of the house, leading them to their secret hideouts in the woods where they would wait until the danger had passed.

The violence at home began to take a toll on Kael. His training with Alaric became his refuge, a place where he could channel his anger and frustration into something productive. Each strike, each movement was fueled by the desire to protect his siblings and to find a way out of their miserable existence. But no amount of training could completely shield him from the horrors he faced at home.

One particularly harrowing night, Joren's rage reached new heights. He had been drinking heavily at the tavern and returned home in a state of blind fury. Kael could see the storm brewing in his father's eyes and knew that they needed to leave immediately. He grabbed Liliana and Roan, and they fled into the woods, their hearts pounding with fear.

As they hid in their makeshift shelter, the sounds of their father's rampage echoed through the trees. The crashing of furniture, the breaking of glass, and the anguished cries of their mother filled the night air. Kael held his siblings close, whispering words of comfort even as his own heart was gripped by terror.

The next morning, they returned to find their home in shambles. Broken dishes and overturned furniture littered the floor, and the smell of spilled alcohol hung heavy in the air. Their mother, Elara, was sitting in a corner, her face bruised and her eyes filled with tears. Kael's heart ached at the sight, and he felt a surge of anger and helplessness.

"Kael," Elara whispered, her voice trembling. "You need to take care of your brother and sister. Promise me you'll protect them."

"I will, Mother," Kael replied, his voice choked with emotion. "I promise."

The abuse continued to escalate, and Kael began to fear for their lives. He knew that something had to be done, but he felt powerless to stop his father. The weight of his promise to protect his siblings pressed heavily on his shoulders, driving him to train even harder. He needed to become stronger, to find a way to stand up to his father and end the cycle of violence.

One fateful night, the situation reached a breaking point. Joren, in a drunken rage, attacked Elara with a ferocity that Kael had never seen before. Kael tried to intervene, but his father's strength, fueled by his rage, was overwhelming. Elara fell to the ground, her body limp and lifeless, and Kael felt a scream of anguish rise in his throat.

"Mother!" Liliana cried, her voice filled with terror.

Kael knelt beside Elara, his hands shaking as he tried to find a pulse. But it was too late. She was gone. The realization hit Kael like a physical blow, and he felt a white-hot anger surge through him. He turned to face his father, his eyes blazing with fury.

"You killed her," Kael said, his voice low and deadly. "You killed our mother."

Joren sneered, his drunkenness making him oblivious to the danger he was in. "She was weak," he slurred. "Just like you."

Something inside Kael snapped. He lunged at his father, his fists flying as he struck out with all the strength and fury he could muster. Joren fought back, but Kael was driven by a rage that gave him strength beyond his years. The two of them struggled, crashing into furniture and walls, their grunts and cries filling the small cottage.

In the midst of the struggle, Kael's training with Alaric came to the forefront. He channeled his chi, using it to enhance his strength and agility. He moved with a precision and power that caught his father off guard. With a final, powerful blow, Kael knocked Joren to the ground.

Breathing heavily, Kael stood over his father's unconscious form. The room was in ruins, the evidence of their struggle clear. He turned to Liliana and Roan, who were huddled together in a corner, their eyes wide with fear.

"We need to leave," Kael said, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside him. "Now."

Kael quickly gathered what little belongings they had and led his siblings out of the house. They fled into the night, their footsteps silent on the forest floor. Kael's mind raced as he tried to come up with a plan. They couldn't stay in Vern; their father would come after them when he woke up. They needed to find a place where they would be safe.

As they made their way through the woods, Kael's thoughts turned to the stories his mother used to tell them. Stories of brave warriors who fought against impossible odds to protect those they loved. He drew strength from those tales, vowing to honor his mother's memory by keeping his promise to protect his siblings.

After hours of walking, they reached a small, abandoned cabin deep in the forest. It was a place they had discovered during one of their many adventures, a place they had once used as a hideout. It would be their refuge now, a place where they could regroup and figure out their next steps.

Kael set about making the cabin as comfortable as possible. He gathered firewood, built a small fire, and found some old blankets to keep them warm. Liliana and Roan huddled together, their faces pale and their eyes filled with uncertainty.

"We'll be safe here," Kael said, trying to reassure them. "We'll figure out what to do next."

As the night wore on, Kael sat by the fire, his mind racing with thoughts of what had happened. He had killed his father, but it hadn't brought him the sense of relief he had hoped for. Instead, he felt a heavy burden settle on his shoulders. He was now responsible for his siblings, and he had to find a way to protect them in a world that seemed determined to break them.

In the days that followed, Kael focused on keeping Liliana and Roan safe and cared for. He hunted for food, using the skills he had learned during his training with Alaric. He continued to practice his chi, knowing that he needed to be strong for his siblings. He taught Liliana and Roan what he knew, helping them to grow stronger and more self-sufficient.

Their life in the cabin was far from easy, but it was better than living in fear under their father's roof. Kael found solace in the quiet of the forest, in the simple tasks of survival. He began to see the beauty in the world around him, the way his mother had taught him to. He drew strength from his memories of her, using them to guide him as he navigated this new chapter of their lives.

Kael knew that they couldn't stay in the cabin forever. They needed to find a more permanent solution, a place where they could truly be safe. He began to plan their next move, thinking about where they could go and how they could start anew. He was determined to give Liliana and Roan the life they deserved, a life free from fear and filled with hope.

One day, while foraging for food, Kael came across a group of travelers. They were kind and offered to help him and his siblings. They told Kael about an orphanage in a nearby town, a place where children without families could find shelter and care. Kael was hesitant at first, but he knew that they needed stability and safety. He decided to take a chance and follow the travelers to the orphanage.

With a heavy heart, Kael led Liliana and Roan to the orphanage, hoping that it would be a place where they could finally find peace. As they arrived, Kael made a silent promise to his mother and to himself. He would always protect his siblings, no matter what. And he would continue to train and grow stronger, ready to face any challenges that came their way.

The orphanage was a new beginning, a place where they could start to heal from the wounds of their past. It was not perfect, but it was a step towards a better future. Kael held onto the hope that they would find happiness and security, and he resolved to work tirelessly to make that hope a reality.
