Chereads / The Broken Sphere (The Chrysocolla Chronicles) / Chapter 15 - The Giant of the Dark Forest

Chapter 15 - The Giant of the Dark Forest

The dense canopy of the Dark Forest loomed overhead, casting twisted shadows on the ground below. Alice's captors trudged through the undergrowth, their tempers flaring as they argued amongst themselves.

"This is your fault, Beric!" one of the men shouted, his voice dripping with frustration. "If you had kept an eye on the girl, we wouldn't be lost in this cursed forest!"

"Shut it, Harvin," Beric snapped back, his face red with anger. "You were supposed to be watching the rear! If anyone's to blame, it's you!"

"Seriously, if you asked me, you're both at fault." Vanessa muttered under her breath, annoyed at the men acting childish.

"Both of you, enough!" their leader barked, his tone brooking no argument. He glared at them, silencing their bickering. "The forest has gone quiet. Keep your voices down."

The sudden silence of the forest was eerie, the usual cacophony of nocturnal creatures conspicuously absent. The leader scanned their surroundings, a sense of unease settling over him. "Fennick," he called out, turning to one of his men. "Where's—Fennick?"

There was no response. The leader's eyes narrowed as he looked around. "Fennick, answer me!" he barked again, louder this time.

The group exchanged uneasy glances, realizing that Fennick was nowhere to be seen. They began to search the immediate area, their movements becoming more frantic with each passing moment.

Meanwhile, a few feet away, Fennick stood in a small clearing, whistling tunelessly as he relieved himself against a tree. Oblivious to the growing tension among his comrades, he continued whistling, enjoying the brief respite.

Suddenly, a massive shadow loomed over him, blotting out the sunlight. The air around him seemed to grow colder, and an instinctive chill ran down his spine. Fennick looked up slowly, his eyes widening in horror as he saw the giant beast of the forest staring down at him, its eyes glowing with an ominous light.

He screamed, the sound piercing the stillness of the night and echoing through the trees. His scream was a desperate, primal cry that sent a jolt of fear through his fellow captors. They turned in unison, rushing towards the source of the noise.

"Fennick!" the leader shouted, his voice carrying a mixture of anger and fear. The group sprinted towards the clearing, their weapons drawn, hearts pounding in their chests.

They arrived just in time to see Fennick stumbling away from the massive silhouette of the beast, his face pale with terror. The giant loomed over him, its immense form partially obscured by the shadows. The creature let out a low, menacing growl, causing the ground to vibrate.

For a brief moment, the captors stood frozen, the reality of the situation sinking in. The beast was an enormous, terrifying presence, its dark, hulking figure dwarfing everything around it. The leader's eyes widened as he took in the sight of the creature, his mind racing for a plan.

"Run!" he barked suddenly, the command cutting through the paralyzing fear. "Everyone, run!"

Without a second thought, the captors turned and fled, their earlier bravado replaced by sheer panic. They dashed through the undergrowth, the sound of their frantic footsteps and ragged breaths filling the air. Fennick, too, bolted, adrenaline propelling him forward despite his exhaustion.

The beast roared again, a deafening sound that seemed to shake the very trees. Its massive form moved with surprising speed, but the dense forest provided the captors with a semblance of cover as they darted between trees and leapt over fallen branches.

"Keep moving!" the leader shouted, his voice barely audible over the chaos. "Don't look back!"

The captors stumbled through the dense forest, their breaths coming in ragged gasps as they fled from the relentless giant. The beast's thunderous footsteps echoed through the trees, a constant reminder of the immense danger that pursued them. Each member of the team felt the weight of impending doom pressing down on them, but desperation fueled their every move.

"Keep moving!" the leader shouted, glancing over his shoulder to see the enormous shadow gaining on them.

Beric, running beside him, nodded grimly. "We need to set a trap or something. We can't outrun this thing forever!"

Harvin, struggling to keep pace, pointed to a narrow ravine up ahead. "Maybe we can use that! If we can lead it there, it might slow down!"

They veered towards the ravine, the ground beneath them becoming uneven and treacherous. The giant roared, its voice a monstrous cacophony that reverberated through the forest. As they neared the edge of the ravine, the leader turned to the others.

"Vanessa, Fennick and Beric, take positions on either side," he commanded, his voice steady despite the chaos. "Harvin, you and I will lure it towards the edge."

With quick nods, they split up, each taking their positions. Harvin and the leader skidded to a halt at the precipice, turning to face the oncoming beast. "Hey! Over here!" Harvin yelled, waving his arms wildly.

The giant's glowing eyes fixed on them, and it charged forward with terrifying speed. The ground shook beneath its weight, the trees trembling as it barreled towards them. The leader and Harvin stood their ground, their hearts pounding.

"Now!" the leader shouted as the beast neared the edge. Fennick and Beric leaped from their hiding spots, brandishing makeshift weapons – large branches and sharpened sticks. They struck at the beast's legs, trying to force it off balance.

But the giant was unfazed. It swatted Fennick aside with a massive hand, sending him crashing into the underbrush. Vanessa barely managed to dodge a similar fate, scrambling back as the beast roared in fury.

"Harvin, get back!" the leader yelled, pulling him away from the edge just as the giant's colossal foot stomped down where he had been standing.

The captors regrouped, their attempts to slow the giant proving fruitless. The beast seemed unstoppable, its rage only growing with each passing moment. They exchanged desperate glances, realizing that their efforts were failing.

"We need a new plan," Fennick gasped, clutching his side where a sharp branch had cut him during the struggle.

Just when it seemed like their strength was about to give out, Beric, who had been running slightly ahead of the group, skidded to a halt. His sharp eyes had caught sight of something hidden among the dense foliage—a narrow, almost invisible crevice in a large rock formation. The shadows within promised a hiding spot that might just be their salvation.

"Over here!" Beric hissed urgently, waving his arms to catch the others' attention.

The leader and the rest of the captors stumbled to a stop, their eyes following Beric's gesture. The narrow crevice was barely wide enough for a person to squeeze through, but it led into a dark cavernous space beyond the rocks.

"Quickly, inside!" the leader ordered, his voice hushed but commanding.

One by one, the captors squeezed through the narrow opening, their bodies scraping against the rough stone. The darkness inside the crevice enveloped them, and they huddled together, trying to remain as silent as possible. The air was damp and cool, a stark contrast to the hot, frantic atmosphere outside.

The last to enter was Harvin, who glanced back nervously at the forest. He could still hear the giant's heavy footsteps, drawing nearer. With a final, desperate push, he squeezed into the crevice, pulling a large fern over the entrance to further conceal their hiding spot.

Inside the dark cavern, the captors held their breath, their hearts pounding in unison. The only light came from faint shafts of moonlight filtering through the canopy above, casting eerie shadows on the walls. The sound of the giant's approach grew louder, and they could feel the vibrations through the ground.

Suddenly, the giant's footsteps stopped. The forest fell eerily silent, save for the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind. The captors dared not move, their eyes wide with fear and anticipation. They could hear the beast sniffing the air, its massive presence just outside their hiding place.

Seconds stretched into agonizing minutes as they waited, every muscle tensed. The giant's breath was audible, a deep, rumbling sound that reverberated through the rocks. It seemed to linger for an eternity, searching for its prey.

Then, with a final, frustrated roar, the beast turned and began to move away, its heavy footsteps gradually fading into the distance. The captors remained still, barely daring to believe their luck. It wasn't until the sounds of the forest returned—the chirping of insects, the rustling of leaves—that they finally allowed themselves to relax, if only slightly.

The leader let out a slow, controlled breath. "Good job, Beric," he whispered. "You may have just saved our lives."

Beric nodded, still tense but relieved. "We need to stay here for a while, make sure it doesn't come back."

Alice followed Rowen through the winding, dimly lit tunnels of the hollowed tree, her mind racing with questions. The strange events of the past hours had left her both bewildered and curious, and there was one question that she couldn't shake.

"Rowen," she began tentatively, her voice breaking the silence, "who are you? I mean, really? You've done things I've never seen anyone do before. You saved me in ways I didn't think possible. I need to know the truth."

Rowen kept walking, his footsteps echoing softly against the earthen floor. He remained silent, his face shadowed and unreadable. Internally, he wrestled with the decision. Should he reveal his true identity to Alice? Would she understand, or would it only complicate things further? His past was a labyrinth of secrets and burdens, and sharing it was not something he did lightly.

Alice pressed on, her frustration growing. "You owe me that much, don't you think? After everything that's happened, I deserve to know who I'm trusting with my life."

Rowen stopped abruptly, turning to face her. His eyes, usually so calm and composed, flickered with a mixture of emotions. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words caught in his throat. How could he begin to explain the complexities of his existence?

Before he could decide, a faint murmur reached their ears, growing louder with each passing second. Rowen's expression hardened, and he motioned for Alice to stay silent. The voices were coming from the end of the tunnel, echoing ominously in the enclosed space.

They crept forward cautiously, the shadows of the tunnel providing some cover. As they neared the tunnel's exit, the voices became clearer, filled with agitation and urgency. Alice's heart skipped a beat as she recognized the tones—her captors.

"We need to find that girl," one of them was saying angrily. "The boss won't tolerate another failure."

"We should have never let her out of our sight," another voice added, frustration evident.

Rowen and Alice exchanged a glance, the unspoken understanding passing between them. Rowen held a finger to his lips, signaling for silence, and then gestured for Alice to follow him back into the deeper shadows of the tunnel.

They retreated a few paces, ensuring they were out of earshot. Rowen leaned close to Alice, his voice barely a whisper. "We'll have to wait until they pass. Stay close and be ready to move."

Alice nodded, her earlier questions momentarily set aside by the pressing danger. As they crouched in the darkness, the weight of her unanswered question lingered in the air. She would find out who Rowen was, but for now, survival took precedence.

The voices of the captors grew louder, their footsteps echoing through the tunnel. Alice's heart pounded in her chest, but she took a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever came next. She trusted Rowen, despite the mystery surrounding him, and knew they would face this threat together.
