Chapter 49 - I’m Scared Of This Grandpa

Brendan's words left Charlotte stunned.

"What do you mean? What happened to the Reeds and the Monroes?"

Brendan looked at her, disbelief flashing across his face. "You don't know? After I returned from your place, our factories were forced to shut down for repairs. The bank demanded we repay all our loans by the end of the day, and nearly all our partner companies canceled their contracts. And now, people are in front of the company demanding to pay our debts and end all collaboration with us. We're barely holding on!"

He wiped away a tear. "I realize now that taking those gifts was a mistake, which offended the Monroes. I know I messed up, Charlotte. Please help us. Beg the Monroes for forgiveness. We need them to let us go. If this mess continues, Reed Corporation will need to liquidate and will file for bankruptcy."

Charlotte's eyes widened as she realized the gravity of the situation. A part of her felt a cruel sense of satisfaction at seeing the Reeds brought so low.

"Hah, you deserve every bit of it," she said coldly. "If you continue doing evil, it eventually comes back to bite you. There is a saying..what goes around, comes around. Please don't come looking for me. Those gifts were for Ethan, not me. You're barking up the wrong tree."

"You... you can't be serious," Brendan sputtered, his face contorted in anger.

Charlotte felt a chill run down her spine. "Stay away from me," she snapped, turning on her heel and fleeing.

Brendan watched her go, his eyes blazing with fury.

When he returned home empty-handed, Thaddeus was waiting, his expression dark with disappointment. He had high expectations to his grandson that he will be able to resolve this matter.

"Have I overindulged you? Spoiled brat wastrel!" Thaddeus's voice was a low growl. "You can't even complete a simple task! You're a disgrace!"

Brendan's fists clenched. "Grandpa, I waited outside Charlotte's office all day. She wouldn't budge. She even claimed the gifts were for Ethan, not her. She's lying!"

"That's your problem to fix!" Thaddeus roared. "If you can't handle Charlotte Reed, don't bother coming back here! You're worthless!"

Brendan left, his heart heavy with frustration and anger.

Inside the house, the tension was palpable.

"Thaddeus, the Huangs have terminated their cooperation with us!"

"The president of Cirrus Bank insists we repay the loans today, or they'll sue us."

"We tried raising money, but everyone hung up when they heard our name."

"The Monroes refuse to speak with us. They claim Damien Monroe is out of town."

Thaddeus's face grew grimmer with each piece of bad news. He couldn't sit still any longer.

After much thought, he made a decision. He would swallow his pride and visit Charles Reed's home.

Thaddeus's unexpected visit made Charles and Claudia anxious.

It had been years since Thaddeus last visited, and they couldn't help but wonder why he was there now. It's a miracle that Thaddeus has the time now to visit their place. Brendan had stolen their valuable chest of jewels that morning, and Claudia had hoped her daughters would beg Thaddeus to take them back into the family. But they had yet to return.

When Brendan returned that afternoon, returning the gifts and car, Charles and Claudia were left bewildered, wondering what was happening. And now, Thaddeus in front of them. They must be dreaming!

Then Thaddeus himself showed up that evening.

What is going on? Claudia thought, her mind racing. Is he here to take back the house or the gifts?

"Dad, you..." Charles began, his voice trembling.

But Thaddeus surprised him with a rare smile. "Living in this small house must have been hard on you, Charles. Move back in with us tomorrow. I'll find a better home for you."

Charles and Claudia were taken aback. Was Thaddeus inviting them back?

The Reeds had a cluster of mansions, but Charles, not being a blood relative, had been relegated to this old, dilapidated house for decades. And now Thaddeus wanted them to return?

Thaddeus continued, "Moreover, Charles, it's time for you to start working at the company. Go to work tomorrow. Claudia, if you want, I can find you a position too. You don't have to come to the office, but you'll be compensated."

"Really?" Claudia's voice trembled with excitement.

Working at the Reed company had been their dream for years, but they had never been given the opportunity. Thaddeus always gave excuses when they asked him for a position they'd work on.

And now, Thaddeus was visiting them and offering them everything they had ever wanted.

It felt like a dream. Charles's eyes filled with tears as he looked at Thaddeus. Maybe Thaddeus still saw him as a son after all. His emotions are now racing almost choking to tears.

Just then, Anastasia entered, holding Sophia's hand. She stopped short, eyes wide in surprise at seeing Thaddeus in their living room. Sophia stared at him suspiciously.

Thaddeus smiled warmly. "Anastasia, you're back. This must be your daughter."

It was almost laughable. Thaddeus had always despised Anastasia and her daughter, banning them from the office and the main mansion due to past scandals. Even though Sophia was five years old, this was the first time Thaddeus had seen or spoken to her.

"Sophia, say hello. This is your great-grandfather," Claudia urged.

Sophia clung to Anastasia, whispering, "I'm scared of this grandpa." Everyone's expressions turned somber at her innocent words.
