Chapter 48 - Beatrice’s Heart Knot

"Please come in." Ayanokouji said calmly.

Just by hearing the knock on the door, he already knew that the person standing outside was an impatient girl.

"I don't need your permission." The light voice of a woman was heard outside the door, and the door of the room was opened by a gust of wind.

The small figure of Beatrice appeared, and the sound of her footsteps on the floor was very clear.

"Sorry, what's the matter?" Ayanokouji asked.

"Betty heard Ram say that you were studying the words of this world." Beatrice crossed her arms over her chest and raised her head slightly, with a hint of pride in her eyes.

"Yes." Ayanokouji nodded.

"Really, I didn't expect my contractor to be illiterate." Beatrice sighed and looked very helpless.

"I'm very sorry..."

"Really, stop apologizing all the time!" Beatrice pouted. "It's rare that Betty has free time today, come with me."

She waved her hand casually, and a black vortex appeared behind her.

Ayanokouji looked at the black vortex. Through the center of the vortex, he could vaguely see the image of another room—the Forbidden Library.

This was Beatrice's ability called 'Door Crossing.'

He clearly remembered that when he was in the village, Beatrice and the others seemed to use this ability to teleport from the mansion to the village.

"What are you doing just standing there, come here!" Beatrice then led him directly through the ferry gate and into the Forbidden Library.

"Sorry, Betty, does this have something to do with me?" Ayanokouji asked, but he almost guessed the reason why Beatrice came to him.

"Extraordinary idiot!" Beatrice snorted, closed her eyes, moved her fingers, and a book flew out from the bookshelf and accurately landed in her hand.

After four hundred years, she knew the location of almost every book in the Forbidden Library.

"Then let's start with this book. You need to learn the first three chapters today!"

"This..."

"Teaching you how to read! Ram is too soft. Teaching an idiot like you definitely won't be efficient, so let Betty teach you directly! It's an honor of your lifetime to be guided by Betty!" Beatrice said. "Listen carefully now. If you don't learn the first three chapters today, you won't be able to leave here today!"

"This is very rude..." Ayanokouji said slowly, "But thank you."

"Don't thank me!"

Beatrice's face blushed momentarily when she heard his thanks, but it was only for a moment. Her expression quickly returned to normal, she raised her head, and said, "Don't thank me, I didn't intend to help you, I just thought it would be very embarrassing if others found out that Betty's contractor was illiterate! I'm not helping you for no reason, do you hear me!"

Although this was only a temporary contract for seven days, Beatrice seemed to take it very seriously.

About half an hour later, Ayanokouji had finished studying the three chapters assigned to him by Beatrice.

"It seems that your brain isn't that stupid?" Beatrice closed the book and said calmly, but her heart was still a little surprised, because for someone who had never studied anything other than their native language, one would have to study for at least two or three hours to master 60-70%.

But Ayanokouji had mastered all the content in just half an hour.

In fact, he himself already had a very strong learning ability, and in the last regression, he had almost mastered several characters.

"That's enough for today!" Beatrice closed the book. "Do you have any other questions? Let me chat with you while Betty still has some free time."

Ayanokouji's eyes continued to observe the Forbidden Library. He noticed that on Beatrice's table, under the cover of many books, a black-covered book was visible.

With just one glance, he could tell that it was the Gospel held by the Witch Cult followers. To ensure that he could completely deceive Petelgeuse, he memorized every detail of the Gospel's cover in his heart.

Ayanokouji remembered that Beatrice seemed to be reading a book without any content. Since it was always open, he didn't see the book's cover at that time. Could it be that Beatrice was reading the Gospel?

He wondered, was Beatrice a member of the Witch Cult?

Although he had some doubts in his mind, there was no change in his current expression.

"Oh, by the way, Roswaal mentioned 'that person' today. Who is that?" Ayanokouji asked, trying to see if he could get any information from Beatrice first.

Beatrice was a little stunned for a moment, with a hint of doubt in her eyes, but soon after there was a trace of anger on her face: "That has nothing to do with you!"

She waved her hand, creating a gust of wind, and sent him straight out of the room.

"It seems that the so-called 'that person' is very important to Beatrice." Ayanokouji whispered to himself, then returned to his room and began thinking about Beatrice.

Even though he only saw a corner, he was almost certain that it was the Gospel.

Why did Beatrice have the Gospel?

The first possibility was that Beatrice was a member of the Witch Cult.

If this was the case, he had to consider the possibility that Beatrice and Petelgeuse were accomplices, and he also had to consider Emilia as their target.

However, Ayanokouji quickly dismissed this possibility, because after this period of getting along, he could clearly feel that Beatrice's character was simple and kind, and if she were really a member of the Witch Cult, if she were a traitor, she should have taken action against the people in the mansion long ago. Moreover, judging from her actions, she couldn't hide the existence of the Gospel at all, otherwise, she wouldn't have put it directly on the table.

Since Beatrice wasn't a member of the Witch Cult, where did the Gospel come from? Was it a trophy taken from the fight against the Witch Cult? Or did it originally belong to Beatrice?

Ayanokouji had seen that the Gospel in Beatrice's hands didn't have a single word in it. This was also a strange thing, because he had seen the Witch Cult's Gospel, and it contained words. The witch followers also acted according to the content of the Gospel, so why was Beatrice's Gospel empty?

Was there a possibility that Beatrice's book was not actually a Gospel? And did this book have something to do with the so-called 'that person'?

There was clearly no way to directly ask her such questions, so Ayanokouji needed to start directly from another direction, asking Puck, or finding relevant answers in the Forbidden Library was also a good option.

At this moment, he felt a cold wind blowing slowly on his body, and turned to see that the window in the room had been opened.

"Elsa, perhaps using the main entrance is a good choice." He said lightly.

"Sorry Master, I prefer another way to enter."

In the shadows of the room, Elsa slowly appeared, with a charming smile on her face.

"I need to get information about the other Sin Archbishops from Petelgeuse." Ayanokouji said slowly. "I asked under the pretense of 'searching for witch cultists who might participate in the trial,' and I will follow up with him tomorrow afternoon. He made an appointment to meet in the forest, and you should remember that his subordinates are called fingers."

"As you command."

Elsa bowed respectfully to him, the smile on her face becoming brighter, as if a thrilling show was about to be staged, and then disappeared again without causing any movement.

"It's time to rest." Ayanokouji said to himself.

He knew he needed to ensure enough sleep so that he could have sufficient physical strength and clear thinking the next day. He still kept the flower that Petra had given him earlier in his pocket, and after thinking for a moment, he placed it in a glass bottle on the table.

"Really! Really! Why is such a scene being shown!"

Beatrice was covering her face with her hands, but her eyes couldn't help but peek through the gaps between her fingers and land on the illusion in the sky. Although she looked very arrogant in the scene, she could only feel unparalleled embarrassment.

Her face was already red, like an overripe fruit, but she also felt a bit of sadness in her heart.

"Ayanokouji Kiyotaka... Will he be the right person for me..."

After her embarrassment gradually subsided, she put her hands down, with a bit of sadness in her eyes that was very evident.

"Please, let it be that person... Please... set Betty free... Whatever happens, please end this..."

Beatrice's eyes gradually became moist, and she tried her best to hold back her urge to cry.

The next morning, Ayanokouji woke up early and came to the courtyard. He happened to see Emilia and Puck walking in the courtyard.

"Good morning! Ayanokouji!"

Seeing his arrival, Emilia's face immediately showed a happy smile. Puck spun his body in the air and waved.

"Good morning." Ayanokouji said to both of them, then started chatting.

He led the conversation and gradually shifted to the topic of magic. Just like in the previous regression, he learned the Shamak skill from Puck and lost control due to the Gate, almost exhausting his energy.

The painful feeling had been experienced by him before, but he still chose to feel it again in this life. In the last regression, Ayanokouji had learned Shamak magic, considering the possibility that this magic might be used in this life. If he used it without asking Puck to symbolically teach him, it might raise some suspicion.

After consuming the Poko Fruit given by Emilia again to restore his magic power, Ayanokouji began to steer the conversation towards Beatrice.

"By the way, Puck, do you know who Roswaal mentioned to Betty yesterday?" Ayanokouji asked deliberately. "I asked Betty yesterday, but she didn't seem to want to talk about it."

"That's the content of Betty's contract." Puck folded his arms and landed on Ayanokouji's head. "Her contract is to guard the Forbidden Library until someone comes, but who that person is, we don't know."

"Can't the contract be terminated?" Ayanokouji asked.

"Yes." Puck shook his head. "The only way to forcibly terminate the contract is through death."

"That's very unfortunate." Ayanokouji said, though his tone and expression didn't change at all.

He didn't feel pity for Beatrice's situation in his heart, but simply thought it was 'bad.' The word fit perfectly in this scene.

He also knew the reason why Beatrice had to stay in the mansion, but yesterday Beatrice came to the village and saved him with healing magic.

If 'that person' is found, Beatrice might be able to remove the restriction of the Forbidden Library, thus turning her into a powerful force in Emilia's camp.

"So, with whom did she sign the contract?" Ayanokouji asked.

"Sorry, that matter can only be told by Betty herself." Puck shook his head.
