Chapter 153 - Chapter 151 - Confusion.

Savannah hesitantly took the phone from the cashier, her fingers shaking slightly as she looked at the digital calendar. Every fiber of her being screamed that something was really wrong, but the numbers wouldn't change. It was indeed 2028. Had an entire year slipped by without her noticing?

Savannah handed the phone back, her palms sweaty. She turned to check out the other people in line; they looked curious, confused, and a little worried. Their stares made her feel like she couldn't breathe.

What is going on?

She swallowed hard, her voice barely a whisper. "This... this can't be happening..."

Ten minutes later, Elijah noticed something was off when he came back from the aisle with a paint brush that Savannah needed, he saw her face looking a little pale, but she had forced a smile.

"Ah, you're back." she said, trying to sound cheerful, even though her eyes told a different story.

"Everything okay?" he asked, putting a comforting tone.

Savannah blinked, then shook her head and chuckled softly. "Nothing, let's bill this up and go have some ice cream."

Elijah didn't push it, but he watched her closely as she faced the billing counter again. She tried to look relaxed, shoving her hands into her cardigan pockets, yet the slight tension in her jaw remained.

The billing clerk, still a bit puzzled, gave her the receipt. Savannah nodded politely and took it, then picked up her bags. Elijah carried the heavier ones as they left the store.

Outside, the air had gotten cooler, and a gentle breeze messed up Savannah's bun. She walked next to Elijah in silence, her mind stuck on what happened at the counter earlier. The date—2028. It didn't make any sense.

An entire year missing?

She swallowed and pressed her lips together. Maybe it was a mistake, some computer glitch, or maybe the clerk had misread. But the way people were looking at her, like she was the one who was off, made her feel anxious.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Elijah asked again, looking over at her as they reached the car.

Savannah shook herself out of her thoughts and chuckled softly. "You sound like Blaze." she teased, giving him a gentle nudge.

Elijah grinned. "I'll take that as a compliment." He opened the car door for her, and she climbed inside.

As he got into the driver's seat, he turned to her. "Ice cream?"

"Yeah," she replied quickly, glad for the distraction.

But even as they headed towards the nearest ice cream place, Savannah couldn't shake the uneasy feeling in her stomach. Something didn't feel right.

The small ice cream shop they ended up at was warm and welcoming, with a retro vibe that made Savannah feel at home. The pastel walls, the colorful ice cream flavors displayed behind the glass, and the soft hum of an old jukebox in the corner all added to the cozy atmosphere.

Savannah walked up to the counter, eager to check out the flavors. Elijah stood next to her with his hands in his pockets, looking around like he'd never been in a place like this before.

Savannah looked at him. "So, what flavor are you getting?"

Elijah shrugged. "Don't know. Just pick one for me."

She blinked at him. "No favorite?"

"I've never had ice cream before."

Savannah froze mid motion, eyes wide like he'd said he was from another planet. "Wait, what?"

Elijah just nodded casually. "Never had it."

"You—you mean ever? Like, in your whole life?"

"Yeah."

Savannah dramatically clutched her chest. "Elijah! That's a crime against humanity!"

He laughed at her reaction. "I just never thought about it. Didn't seem important."

Savannah shook her head in disbelief. "This can't stand. We're fixing this right now." She turned back to the counter determined. "You trust me, right?"

Elijah soft smiled. "With my life." He whispered

"Good. Because I'm about to introduce you to something life-changing." She looked over the options and decided, "We'll get a double scoop of caramel sea salt and a scoop of cookies and a cream for my friend here. And for me, I'll take two scoops of dark chocolate fudge."

The worker quickly handed out the orders, giving each person a cup. Savannah grabbed a spoon, sat down at a corner booth, and patted the seat across from her, signaling Elijah to join her. He paused for a moment before sliding into the seat, watching her with a hint of amusement.

"Alright," Savannah said, putting his ice cream in front of him. "Moment of truth. Try it."

Elijah picked up the spoon, dipped it into the caramel sea salt ice cream, and took a small bite. He chewed thoughtfully—like you do with ice cream—and nodded slightly.

"It's... interesting," he said.

Savannah narrowed her eyes. "Interesting? No way. This is amazing. It's pure happiness in frozen form. Have another bite."

Elijah smiled but went along with it, trying the cookies and cream next. This time, he gave a more serious nod. "Okay, this one is good."

Savannah leaned in, her eyes sparkling. "See? I told you! You've been missing this out your whole life, and you never even knew it."

Elijah was frozen seeing her up close to himself but quickly recovered and chuckled, shaking his head. "You're really into this, huh?"

"You just don't get it. Ice cream is like a hug for your soul." Savannah said with a big smile, scooping up some dark chocolate fudge. "And now, you're officially part of the ice cream lovers' club."

Elijah took another bite, and his face softened a bit. "Well, if this is what being in the club is like, I guess I don't mind."

Savannah grinned. "That's the spirit!"

For a while, they sat quietly, savoring their ice cream as the shop hummed softly around them. Savannah relaxed, letting the earlier weird date incident fade from her mind. In this moment, everything felt normal again.

At least for now.

The next Morning

Savannah sat up in bed, rubbing her temples as her headache throbbed. She squinted at her phone screen again, making sure she wasn't seeing things.

June 27th, 2027.

The date was right. Just like she remembered. But yesterday, at the store, everyone said it was 2028.

Her grip on the phone tightened as a chill ran down her spine. Had yesterday been some kind of prank? A mix-up? Or something even weirder?

She took a deep breath, pushing away the confusion and read Blaze's message instead.

"Good morning, My Love. Did you sleep well?"

Even with all the weird stuff going on in her head, a small smile appeared. Just seeing Blaze's name made her feel better. She quickly typed back:

"Good morning, baby. Slept okay. When are you coming home?"

As she hit send, she threw the blankets off and stood up, stretching before walking over to the window. The golden sunlight filled the room, making everything feel warm and cozy, but that annoying thought still bothered her.

Her phone buzzed, pulling her attention back.

"I'll be home by afternoon. Missed you all night. What are you up to?"

Savannah thought for a second before replying.

"Just woke up. Gonna freshen up and grab some breakfast. Can't wait to see you."

Blaze responded right away.

"Me too. Love you. See you soon, baby ❤"

She put her phone down and let out a sigh. Maybe she was just overthinking it? Maybe she was too tired and mixed up at the store, and everything was just a mix-up.

But something still didn't feel right.

To clear her head, she went into the bathroom and splashed some cold water on her face. The coolness hit her skin, and she looked at herself in the mirror, studying her face like she might find an answer there.

What if it wasn't a mistake? What if it really was 2028?

Savannah shook her head, trying to snap out of it. She needed to find out what was happening. If anyone could help her out right now, it was Elijah. He had been with her at the store and saw how confused she was.

Without wasting any time, she picked up her phone again and sent him a message.

"Eli, are you free? I need to talk to you about something important."

A minute later, her phone buzzed with his reply.

"I'm outside. How about the evening, I'm free later...?"

"Okay, that works." Savannah texted back.

She took a deep breath, changed into a casual summer dress, tied her hair into a loose ponytail, and slipped on her sandals before heading out.

As she walked down the hallway, the morning sun pouring in through the big windows made her feel warm. But she had this uneasy feeling, like something was off—something she couldn't quite see but sensed lurking just beneath the surface.

And she was going to find out exactly what it was.
