By nightfall, fatigue was setting in after a full day of driving and exploring. As the towns grew further apart, Tom spotted a sign for a camping area up ahead. "Let's call it a night here," he suggested thankfully.
Dusk was falling as they pulled into the quiet grounds, locating an empty site near the edge of the trees. Under the fading light, they worked together hurriedly to set up their small tent, struggling with poles that refused to cooperate. With teamwork and more than a few curse words, they finally managed to erect the canvas shelter lopsided but standing.
Too hungry to wait any longer, they got a fire started and dug out the supplies for a quick meal. Tom put a pot of water on to boil while John sliced potatoes and sausages. As the stars began to emerge in the vast darkening sky, the aroma of their simple cooking filled the cooling evening air.
Soon they were sitting cross-legged by the crackling fire, filling their plates greedily. Despite its basic ingredients, the camp meal was satisfying after a long day on the open road. Nothing tasted better than food cooked over an open flame under endless constellations.
For a while they ate in contented silence, watching the dance of flames and listening to the chorus of insects and night birds awakening in the woods. An occasional hoot of an owl punctured the darkness. Once their hunger was sated, comfortable conversation resumed as plates were emptied and tea was made.
Talk turned from reminiscing about past trips to hopes and dreams for the future. But for now, being fully present in this moment was what mattered most. Out here away from the busyness of daily life, a deep calm had settled over them. The simplicity and beauty of simple camp fare under a tapestry of stars seemed to put everything into clearer perspective.
John let out a relaxed sigh, gazing up at the rich tapestry above them. "You know, I'm really glad we did this," he commented fondly to Tom. His friend smiled back appreciatively. "Me too, it's exactly what I needed. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, but I'm sure it will be another great adventure." With full stomachs and lighter spirits, they were ready for a good night's rest and to see where the open road may lead come morning.
