Chapter 21 - Awake

The southern continent had Emburn island while the northern continent had Chelmsrock.

Chelmsrock was a mysterious island that was home to the enigmatic special squad of the royal military.

Apart from the fact that it was the military's secret headquarters, it was also the training ground for the members of the special squad.

It has state of the art defense systems and amazing technological equipment.

And at the very center of this large expanse of land was a large building that acted as the main base, linking various departments of the military together. It was hexagonal and it spanned almost five kilometers in length.

Golgotha was located at the center of this building; if it could even be called that.

Within the building, two men could be seen walking together. One of them was Sal, the trainmaster.

He was still as mysterious as ever. Currently dressed in official military uniform; a double breasted white coat, a pair of matching pants and black leather shoes. His cap was currently being worn, its visor shielding his upper face.

Beside him was a young lady with black hair and gray eyes that had heavy bags underneath. She was plump and short, her lab coat almost reaching her ankles.

She took hurried steps beside Sal, trying to keep up with him as she spoke.

"It's been a month since the examinees entered Golgotha's fourth section. All of them have woken up except one."

"Ichor Crestmont." Sal said and the short lady nodded.

"I've been monitoring his vitals, they are pretty stable. But even then, I can't help but feel like he's quite the peculiar one."

"I know. Gave us all quite the shock during the test."

Sal gestures towards his left and the woman follows after his lead, turning left into a corridor up ahead. She handed the file in her hand to Sal.

"I honestly don't know what's preventing him from waking up. My guess is one of two things,"

Sal took the file from the lady's hand, his eyes glancing through as he nodded his head at her, showing that he was paying attention to her words.

"My first guess is a self induced coma. According to yours and the other cadets words, he was pretty battered. His body might have shut down in order to allow him to heal better."

"What's your second guess?" Sal asked as he closed the file.

He waved at a few staff who saluted him as he walked by. The short lady furrowed her brows at Sal's dismissive remark in regards to her first opinion before continuing,

"My second guess is that it might have to do with the fact that he was the only one to get that deep into the sector."

"Golgotha is divided into four sections with each sector housing three levels except for the first which houses just one level. The deeper into the sector one goes, the better the enhancement. But not everybody can handle the enhancements."

"Which is why it is left to the body to choose how much it can handle. When a cadet enters Golgotha, they immediately lose consciousness and their body determines whether to sink further into the sector or to remain higher up where the fluid isn't as potent."

Sal looked at the lady and sighed,

"I heard he immediately sank to the bottom of the final floor, laying at the border to the second section."

"Yes. Only the Warburn child could enter the third level and he remained at the very top. Sinking directly to the bottom is something we've never seen. It's almost as if his body is trying to say it's ready for the next section."

The lady had an excited gaze as she thought about the situation regarding Ichor's slumber.

"His body must be magnificent…" she muttered.

"But that's the problem. If his body is so good, he should be awake by now. Something's wrong and while I don't believe either of your conjectures are wrong, I don't believe they are entirely right either."

"May I ask why?" The lab lady looked at sal. It was rare that he would outrightly reject her suggestions.

"Because I've seen what his body can handle. I'm sure that he had the highest recoverability among all the cadets. He's… he's different from them."

The lab lady was stunned for a moment, she seemed surprised to hear Sal's words.

"Wow, I've never heard you praise someone so much."

"I merely said he's different." Sal chuckled.

"Well, I'll leave you to it. I have to head back to the lab. If I find anything noteworthy, I'll make sure to beep you."

Sal nodded his head. He watched the lab lady leave before turning around to head to his destination.

Knock! Knock!

"Come in." A female voice sounded from within.

Sal opened the door to the room, his eyes locking on Maja's figure.

Just like him, she was also dressed in military uniform. A back shirt, white trousers and black shoes. her white coat hung on her shoulders as she stood by the window, gazing outside.

The room itself wasn't that large and it had a musky scent. Maja barely spent any time here. She was always at her post.

Behind her was a table and two chairs across each other. On the table was a briefcase. The rest of the office was empty.

Everything needed to run the office was in a small bracelet that was probably now in the briefcase.

"I see you are packed." Sal said to her, not leaving the door.

"Shouldn't you be heading to the major's office?" she asked. She didn't need to look back to see the file in his hand.

"I came to say farewell. You have a bad habit of always leaving without saying goodbye."

"Goodbyes are for the dead." Maja chuckled.

"How's the situation over there?"

"Cold."

"Well, take care." Sal tilted his hat a bit before turning around to leave.

"Wait–" Maja was about to call it when the door suddenly opened from outside.

It was the lab lady. She was panting and she had a crazy expression on her face. Sal immediately had a guess at what happened.

"I… I just got… beeped… by my assistant!" the lady spoke through gaps.

"He… he is awake."

"Ichor is awake."
