Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: "First Blood"

************************************************

Damien fled the house, his feet racing down the street in a frantic attempt to get away. But as he ran, his emotions caught up with him. Anger and helplessness swirled inside, fueled by the memories of all he had lost.

The world had been cruel to him, snatching away his parents and leaving him to face the harsh realities of life alone. Every day was a struggle, a constant battle to survive. And now, the one person who had saved his life, Mr. Jenkins, was in danger, defenseless against the monster that lurked within those walls.

The thought ignited a firestorm of rage within Damien, fueling his determination to act. He spun around, his grip on the crowbar tightening like a vice as he charged back towards the house with a fierce battle cry. His heart raced with a mix of fear and determination, pounding in his chest like a blacksmith's hammer.

Damien's lips moved silently as he ran, his eyes fixed on the house ahead. "Don't give up, please don't give up..." he whispered, his heart is pounding in his chest . He was praying for Mr. Jenkins, for his survival.

As he burst through the door, he was met with a sight that made his blood boil with fury. Mr. Jenkins lay motionless on the floor, the creature butchering his lifeless body with an unnatural fervor, its blade slicing through flesh and bone with a sickening ease.

Damien's anger exploded like a grenade, unleashing a maelstrom of fury as he launched himself at the creature without hesitation. He swung the crowbar with all his might, striking the creature's head with a loud crack that echoed through the room like a death knell. The impact sent the creature crashing to the floor, its grip on the knife faltering as it struggled to regain its senses.

With a fierce cry, Damien unleashed a flurry of attacks, his crowbar rising and falling with deadly precision, each blow landing with a sickening crunch. The creature tried to defend itself, but Damien's blows rained down relentlessly, fueled by his anger, frustration, and grief. With each strike, Damien felt a sense of catharsis, as if he was unleashing all his pent-up emotions onto the creature.

He struck again and again, until the creature lay motionless, its twisted form battered beyond recognition.

Damien stood panting, his chest heaving with exhaustion, as he gazed upon the creature's lifeless body. His eyes then fell upon Mr. Jenkins, and a wave of sorrow washed over him like a tidal wave of grief. He had lost another person he cared about.

Just as he was processing his emotions, a sudden, robotic voice echoed in his mind.

["Congratulations, Damien, on your first kill!"]

["Your bravery has been rewarded with 2 copper coins and 5 experience points."]

["You have defeated a Lowly Goblin, a weak but troublesome creature."]

["Check your System Panel for more details on your progress and rewards."]

As the voice faded, a translucent screen materialized before him, displaying:

Damien's eyes widened in shock. What was this? Some kind of twisted game? He looked around, wondering if anyone else had heard the voice, but he was alone. As he gazed at the creature's corpse, an information screen flickered to life:

[Lowly Goblin - Lv 1]

[HP: 0/20]

[SP: 0/20]

[EXP: 5]

[DROP: 2 Copper Coins]

But before he could make sense of it, a deafening voice boomed across the world, shaking the very foundations of reality.

"ATTENTION ALL LIVING BEINGS OF EARTH!"

It thundered, echoing off the skies and reverberating through every cell of Damien's body.

The air seemed to vibrate with an otherworldly energy as the voice continued,

"THE BINDING THAT HELD BACK UNSPEAKABLE HORRORS AND ENTITIES HAS BEEN BROKEN. REALITY IS SHARED, AND YOU MUST NOW SURVIVE IN A DISTORTED REALM WHERE MALEVOLENT FORCES SEEK TO CONSUME YOU."

"GROW STRONGER, ADAPT, AND HARNESS THE SYSTEM'S POWER TO UNLOCK YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL,"

the voice urged, its tone unyielding.

"SURVIVAL IS YOUR ONLY HOPE. THE SYSTEM WILL GUIDE AND AID YOU. YOUR JOURNEY BEGINS NOW."

As the voice faded, the world around Damien seemed to shift and distort, like a reflection in rippling water. The creature's corpse was gone, leaving behind only the 2 copper coins. Damien felt a shiver run down his spine. What had he just gotten himself into? The System's screen still hovered before him, a constant reminder of the twisted game he was now a part of.

He shook his head, trying to clear the confusion. He had more pressing matters to attend to. Like burying Mr. Jenkins and finding a way to survive in this harsh new world.

Damien stood frozen, his eyes fixed on Mr. Jenkins' lifeless body. He felt a wave of grief wash over him, followed by a crushing sense of guilt.

"Mr. Jenkins... He sacrificed himself for me... He gave his life to save mine," Damien said, his eyes welling up with tears.

"I was so caught up in my own problems, I never even stopped to think about him... He was always there, watching out for me, and I never even appreciated it."

Damien's voice cracked as he spoke, his emotions overwhelming him. "I remember that time I was struggling to pay the rent, and he offered to help me out... I was too proud to accept, but he just smiled and said 'we're neighbors, we help each other out'... And now he's gone, because of me."

Damien felt a sob rise up in his throat as he gazed at Mr. Jenkins' body. He had never felt such a deep sense of loss before. He had always been so focused on his own survival, he had never stopped to think about the people around him.

As he stood there, Damien knew he had to do something with Mr. Jenkins' body. He couldn't just leave it there, but he also couldn't bury it outside in the distorted world. He thought of the System's warning about the dangers of the outside world and knew he had to find another solution.

Damien slowly walked over to his bed and grabbed a bed sheet. He gently wrapped Mr. Jenkins' body in the sheet, trying to treat the lifeless form with dignity.

"I'm sorry," Damien whispered, his voice barely audible. "I'm so sorry I couldn't save you."

As he finished, Damien stepped back to look at Mr. Jenkins last time. The blanket-wrapped body looked like a macabre package, but it was the best he could do. He pushed the body into a corner of the room, trying to conceal it from view.

Damien took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. He knew this was only a temporary solution, but it was better than leaving Mr. Jenkins' body exposed. He glanced around the room, wondering what other dangers lay hidden.

The System's screen still hovered before him, a constant reminder of the twisted game. Damien knew he had to keep moving, to find a way to survive in this distorted world. But for now, he just stood there, frozen in grief and uncertainty.
