Chapter 24 - No Rest for the Wicked (Part 3)

Without realizing how much they've already tread, the trio had arrived at the old wooden house, which was enclosed by the thick woodland. Only if one scrutinized meticulously would they be able to find such a place. To Jogrin, this was a place that gave a sort of familiarity. He recalled why he chose stay in a place like this, and what he went through.'... To think I'd end up somewhere similar...'Fate sure loved to play cruel jokes."I guess this is where I'll be staying for now." Despite what was going on in his mind, Jogrin remained expressionless and muttered."I know I'm just going to get the same answer from you... but is this really alright with you?" Proxer asked, looking somewhat blue."Yeah, you know it.""I'm really sorry. Like I told you, I can't let you near my children, especially after what you just told us." Though Naytia apologized to Jogrin again, she followed up without mincing her words at all.Normally, the person receiving those words would be irritated, but once again, Jogrin paid it no mind."I understand your concerns, so just stop saying sorry already..." However, he was annoyed by Naytia behaved, because she kept doing it again and again."Oh... s-""Stop it.""... I must've offended you for being so direct...""Lady, allow me to reiterate, I fully understand your concerns. That's why, stop apologizing already... Do you understand me?"Jogrin couldn't help but sigh at Naytia's misunderstanding. He turned away from the lady who was feeling embarrassed and looked at Proxer."Then I suppose I shall settle here until there's further notice from Kapel. I'll try... not..." Jogrin was propounding his thoughts, but he refrained from continuing as he perceived an abrupt upheaval in Proxer's mind.Toward that, Jogrin shut his mouth. He wasn't panicking, he was merely waiting for Proxer to speak up. He anticipated that Proxer was about to make up his mind on a certain matter.Perhaps he needed to reminded again, just like with Naytia. They sure were compatible with each other."This place reminds you of your past, doesn't it? There's no way I can let-""This is the only suitable place though, is it not? Besides, so what if it does remind me? It's in the past. It serves as a lesson, sure, but I'm not going to emotionally associate myself with it. If I do, all the effort I put into suppressing my own emotions will be for naught."Jogrin's way of telling Proxer not to worry was rather... peculiar. That wasn't a mindset anyone would normally have, yet how Jogrin explained actually made sense. That was why he could manage to keep up with his usual expressionless self, after all. However, to Proxer, it meant entirely something else. The way Proxer saw this was how a normal person would interpret this as well."This is nothing but hiding away your suffering..." He softly muttered to himself.Jogrin continued to gaze at the despondent Proxer."Whatever the case, since this place is so well-hidden and far from residential areas, I doubt anyone'd come here, let alone find this place. I guess this is where I'll be staying, if you haven't heard me already. If the two of you feel any need to keep me supervised, feel free to install any device with such purpose."To ease their potential worries about another matter, Jogrin gave the advice. Even though whether he'd cause another chaotic outbreak like he did at the military hospital wasn't on Proxer's mind at all, Jogrin made sure to implicitly remind him. He wasn't confident about his skills in keeping his emotions in check, despite having kept at it for as long as he'd lived.Getting himself watched so the others could react timely did put Jogrin's mind at ease, albeit only very slightly."I wouldn't do something like that!" Proxer openly expressed his disagreement."While that's one of the options. This place lacks electricity, also signal too. So that means remote monitoring isn't feasible." Nayita, on the other hand, calmly judged."Well, I guess that's a no-go then." Jogrin simply shrugged his shoulders in response, but in the next moment, he realized he might've stepped onto a landmine himself. He stole glances at Proxer, anticipating him suggesting something that wouldn't be ideal for both himself and Jogrin. Fortunately, Proxer hadn't been able to think of that. Seizing this opportunity, Jogrin decided to send them away before Proxer could."It may still be somewhat early in the day, but I think the two of you should head back anyway. Not that you trust me much, but I can promise you that I won't do anything detrimental to those living here. Well, let's just say I'll find a place to sit down and do nothing at all. That's how I used to spend my days anyway, so it's no big deal."Even though it was just an empty promise, Jogrin still attempted to use it to push them away. As for whether he'd uphold that promise, it all depended on what he wanted to do, as well as what'd happen after the couple left... if they agreed to it that was."Then, we shall take our leave." Naytia bowed at Jogrin politely as she tugged at Proxer's sleeve.Despite his reluctance, Proxer was dragged away by his wife who appeared to be in a hurry."I'll come back soon! Don't go anywhere, okay?!" Proxer, at the top of his lungs, yelled at and informed Jogrin of his imminent return. In response to that, Jogrin shrugged his shoulders and turned away.Although it was a house, it had no doors. Or rather, the only door it had was lying on the floor, completely rusty. This house made solely out of wood would make for a great haunted place, especially with the addition of a certain boy. In any case, for better or worse, Jogrin found a place to settle in for the time being. It was a lot like where he used to stay most of his time, with one exception: there wouldn't be anyone here to attack him. Back then, despite heralded as "the most powerful", he was also "the most hated" Darkian. Because of that, being the victim of bully was a daily occurrence to him, which he had grown accustomed to.The lack of creatures in the vicinity also put his mind at ease. The tranquility he was experiencing currently was a first for him.'It's not a bad feeling at all...' A thought appeared within his mind.Having told Proxer and Naytia about part of his past, he thought he might feel relieved, but that wasn't the case whatsoever, which, frankly, was to be expected.Never had Jogrin in his life ever felt any kind of positive emotions. There was no way he could reverse that with just speaking about his past. He internally mocked himself for having such a ridiculous thought.Anyway, with nothing else to do, Jogrin sat down a dilapidated chair, which let out a creak, and pondered about various things. They, of course, pertained to the day of when the Darkian planet fell.He closed his eyes... as he felt strong winds rushing at his skin, while the rays of light shone form above.Desperate voiced shrieked in terror, everyone, amassed, was slaughtered before his eyes. They were all running away from the ones bringing about the destruction. Corpses were all over the ground as far as the eyes could see. It was a genocide.Meanwhile, he was put in a shuttle while being apologized to by a kind male voice. There was something else that took place.
