An unprecedented event had shaken the whole of Unovis. It had even aroused a certain infatuation and despite the sadness of the event: curiosity in the surrounding towns. A young man had died in the shadow of the prestigious university, and it was unclear why. Fortunately, it was a rare but very worrying event.
Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the young man had died of his injuries, and the moment the young students would probably remember best was not Kyo's arrival but that of his father later, apologizing to the deceased's relatives.
Eoghan thought it odd, after all, it wasn't their fault, so why apologize "so much". He walked away when things accelerated and the day ended rather abruptly, leaving a bitter taste of fear with all the students present.
Eoghan didn't see Luna again either, she vanished into thin air, and he told himself that day that something really changed this time. His toy would never be his toy, and perhaps it was all a bit silly.
In the evening, wanting to let off some steam on a game night with friends, the young man discovered the news. This time, he understood much more seriously why on earth Kyo's father came.
"Today, a young man died at the large Unovis University near the Nova Point neighborhood. The young man reportedly succumbed to a large knife wound. It would appear that we're talking about a deliberate and premeditated homicide."
The principal, Kyo's father, let a murderer into his establishment, and there was the first victim.
The game had begun, but none of the cards had been played and none of the pawns were aware of their position. Someone seemed to be playing chess, higher up, much higher up.
It was atrociously hot, so hot that even in her light summer dress, Luna was dying of heat. One fine day in June, the pretty blonde joined her best friend and they found themselves in their usual spot, this discreet little park in the small town of Lumin on the outskirts of Unovis.
"Get off your phone, I'm here!" Luna grabbed Dayo's phone as he seemed very absorbed, tapping away at it. "A little crush?"
"Give that back!!!" He blushed trying to retrieve his precious phone.
Luna sat down beside him and handed the phone back to him, placing it in his hand. Dayo seemed preoccupied today. It had to be said that Luna had always found him rather mysterious; not only was he very shy, but to find out what the young man was thinking was always a battle.
"You know you can tell me anything, right?" The blonde took Dayo's hands in hers, shy though he was, she knew he found a certain comfort in physical contact and especially that of his best friend. "It's up to you! Shall we get a coffee to go?"
Lumin wasn't a huge city, but it was a peaceful place where most people knew each other, having for the most part wanted to escape the incessant activity of the capital and wanted to find in this place a haven of peace.
This afternoon was no different from any other they'd experienced. It was just one of many, and Luna was looking forward to the next ones, which would come to her little by little. Luna hoped they would meet again, and again, and again.
Dayo always took Luna home, and it was no exception that day either, as a gentle breeze that had calmed the insurmountable heat lulled their steps along the way. They arrived soon enough when Luna stopped her best friend with a teasing smile on her lips.
"So who's this?"
"None of your business!"
"Of course it's my business I can know who my dear best friend might be in love with."
"Love, that's too much."
"Come on, tell me!"
"Solya. But everyone calls her Sol."
Time passed, slowly, awfully slowly. Sleep seemed to have decided not to join Luna, and as she despaired, she told herself she could do something more useful rather than stare stupidly at the wall, which wasn't moving at all.
At this hour, even the grocery stores open all day were pretty empty. There was only Luna and the salesman, who looked like he was just about to fall asleep. The blonde grabbed a bottle of juice and some snacks and headed for the tills when she heard a voice that sounded familiar.
"12 all in, sir."
"I'll pay by card."
Immediately the girl turned to hide behind the shelf she'd just come from. What could he be doing here? Luna was also surprised to find a young man who seemed to entrust tasks to third parties, being here, in a small neighborhood convenience store that was to her, her snack haunt.
She waited for him to pay and leave, then went to pay in turn, which she quickly did before leaving again. A shiver ran down her spine as a voice called out to her at the exit.
"If you thought you could avoid me like that."
"What do you want?" Luna breathed.
Leaning against the wall, Kyo then approached the blonde to tower over her. Eoghan was taller, but still Kyo was quite impressive in stature. In his he came here by pure chance.
"Aren't you supposed to live in the neighborhoods a little lower down near the university?" Luna resumed.
"You know where I live." He took her hand to place a kiss on it. "What an honor."
Luna violently removed her hand and winced.
"Well, what do you want?"
Kyo looked at Luna with a more serious gaze than usual. He was almost terrifying, his gaze icy cold, a brown streak hindering one of his green irises. Lips puckered, the young man wasn't aiming for an easy answer to Luna. He took on a firm, serious air, one that Luna had only seen on him in public when he seemed so different in her company.
"I'd like us to work together." Kyo stepped closer, then with one hand pushed back a few strands of hair that barred his face. "I want to help you find this 'D'."
"Why?" Luna was a bit scared but she just wanted to understand. A multitude of questions raced through her head. How did he know? Why did he know? Yes, above all, why.
"I'll tell you if you'll follow me."
"No way."
"Too bad. Dayo would blame you."
"Wait." Luna retorted coldly. "How do you know his name?"
"So you're following me?"
Kyo lived about twenty minutes' walk from Luna's and not only did it seem improbable to end up at the home of a near-perfect acquaintance, it seemed even more unwise to go there in the middle of the night.
The young man lived alone in an apartment that must easily be more than five times the size of Luna's, and just as a pang of jealousy passed through her. Kyo offered her a glass of water. She took it miming a thank you, cruelly wondering what on earth she was doing here.
"Do you live alone?" Luna surprised herself by taking an interest in the brunet's life.
"For a few years now, yes." He sat down opposite her, leaning back on the sofa that dominated the room, a piece of paper in his hand. It was a photo, which he placed facing Luna on the coffee table. "That's my sister."
Luna reached for the photo. A sublime young woman was in it, her features fine and soft but her gorgeous green eyes betraying no kinship with the man in front of Luna. Dressed in a long, ruffled dress and a large hat, the image showed a perfectly happy woman.
"She's dead." Kyo wasn't looking at Luna, his face in one hand, his gaze instead found itself focused on the bay window. "She committed suicide four years ago."
Luna held the photo tightly, her lips slightly open and her eyes watering, but she couldn't respond. Despite the fact that she couldn't really grasp the emotions of the man in front of her, she could touch with her fingertips an ounce of sadness.
Like you, Dayo. Why do such beautiful people have to suffer so much in life?
"She'd organized the whole thing and obviously we had no idea." Kyo's voice broke. "My sister was the most beautiful person in this world, when she left our family was shattered. My father dedicated himself to work, he separated from my mother who went to live on the other side of the country and to compensate, he's paying me for this luxury apartment." He let out a rueful chuckle.
Luna was now staring intently at her hands and still didn't know what to say.
"Following my sister's death, I started receiving letters and messages. All signed with the initial of my sister's first name."
After this sentence, Luna was able to catch her breath for a moment and looked at Kyo, whose gaze was still directed towards the bay window.
Everything was the same. Everything.
"What happened next?" she asked.
"Everything stopped one day. The person probably got bored." This time, Kyo returned his gaze to Luna and locked his eyes on the latter's ocean-blue eyes. "But I didn't forget."
Luna gently placed the photo back on the coffee table and caught her breath. She really understood that night that it wasn't over and that no matter how far she went, everything would lead her back to this story.
"I'd like us to collaborate, Luna." Kyo set down a pile of photo sheets that seemed to relate just as much to Kyo's sister as to Dayo. "You'll excuse me, I've been doing some research."
Luna stood, still unable to speak, tears streaming down her cheeks, which Kyo wiped away with one hand as he leaned closer to Luna. His warm breath didn't move the blonde, who let tears run down her cheeks.
"Luna, I think we're both talking about the same person and I'd like you to help me discover their identity."
