Chapter 64 - New allies ?

The fort was still, a quiet that was almost unnerving after the chaos of the battle. The remnants of the fight were scattered around us broken weapons, splintered wood, and the lingering scent of demonic energy that clung to the air like a foul mist.

My body ached with every movement, a constant reminder of the injuries I had sustained, but I was alive. We both were, and that was enough to keep me moving.

Nathaniel was beside me, his presence steady and reassuring. He had been keeping a close watch on me since I'd been injured, his usual playful demeanor replaced by a seriousness that made me feel safe, protected.

As the hours passed, we heard the sound of footsteps approaching the fort. They were careful, deliberate, and I felt my body tense in response.

Nathaniel's hand was on his weapon in an instant, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the entrance to the fort. I moved to stand beside him, wincing slightly as the pain in my chest flared. The footsteps grew louder, and soon, figures appeared in the doorway five of them, all dressed in dark, rugged clothing that bore the marks of countless battles.

They were hunters, seasoned by the look of them, and they carried an air of caution mixed with the confidence of those who had seen and done much in their line of work.

The leader of the group, a tall man with a weathered face and piercing blue eyes, stepped forward. His gaze swept over us, lingering on the dried blood on my clothes and the protective stance Nathaniel had taken beside me. There was a moment of silence, thick with tension, before he spoke.

"Who are you?" His voice was gruff, his tone wary.

Nathaniel was the first to respond, his voice calm but firm. "We're on a mission from the castle. We've been tracking rogue demons in the area. We had a run-in with some of them last night and ended up here."

The leader of the hunters studied us for a long moment before nodding. "We've been tracking them too. They've been causing trouble near the border for weeks now. Looks like we're after the same thing."

The tension in the air eased slightly, though I could still feel the wariness between us. Nathaniel relaxed his grip on his weapon but didn't let his guard down completely. "If we're on the same side, maybe we can help each other out," he suggested. "We've got some information, and it sounds like you do too."

The leader exchanged glances with his group, then nodded. "Name's Garrick," he said, extending a hand to Nathaniel. "We've been tracking these demons for a while now. They're more organized than the usual rogues, which is worrying. We could use the help."

Nathaniel shook his hand, and I could feel some of the tension in my chest ease. It was a relief to know we weren't alone out here, that there were others who shared our goal. But there was also a nagging suspicion at the back of my mind, a voice that warned me not to trust too easily.

As we introduced ourselves, I noticed one of the hunters—a young woman with bright green eyes and auburn hair—watching me closely. She was younger than the others, maybe around my age, and there was a curious, almost admiring look in her eyes as she looked me over. When our eyes met, she smiled, stepping forward.

"You're Aeliana, right?" she asked, her voice soft but clear.

I nodded, feeling a bit self-conscious under her gaze. "Yes, that's right."

"I'm Elara," she said, her smile widening. "I've heard of you. You're one of the best demon hunters in the kingdom, aren't you?"

I felt my cheeks flush at the compliment, not quite sure how to respond. "I... I've had my share of experience," I said modestly, glancing at Nathaniel for support. He grinned at me, clearly amused by my discomfort.

Elara's gaze softened. "I saw the way you handled yourself earlier. You're impressive. We could really use someone like you on this raid we're planning."

There was something in her tone, a hint of admiration mixed with something else that I couldn't quite place. It made me uneasy, though I wasn't sure why. I forced a smile, nodding in acknowledgment. "Thank you. We're happy to help however we can."

The rest of the hunters seemed to relax as well, the initial wariness fading as they realized we were on the same side. We exchanged information, sharing what we knew about the demons' movements and the rumors we'd heard about their hideouts.

It was clear that these weren't just random attacks the demons were organized, coordinated, and that made them far more dangerous than we had anticipated.

As we spoke, I noticed Nathaniel watching me out of the corner of his eye, a thoughtful expression on his face. I wondered what he was thinking, if he shared my unease about the situation.

There was something about the hunters that didn't sit right with me, though I couldn't put my finger on it. Maybe it was the way they seemed to know more than they were letting on, or the way Elara kept looking at me with that strange mix of admiration and something else.

Garrick eventually laid out their plan a raid on a nearby hideout where they believed the rogue demons were regrouping. It was risky, but if we could capture a few demons alive, we might be able to get some answers about what they were planning.

Nathaniel and I agreed to join them, though the thought of another battle so soon after the last one made my stomach knot with anxiety.

As we prepared to move out, Elara came over to me, her expression warm. "Are you sure you're up for this? You're still recovering from that injury."

I appreciated her concern, but I wasn't about to back down. "I'll be fine," I assured her. "We've faced worse than this."

Elara nodded, though there was a hint of doubt in her eyes. "Just... be careful, alright? You're too valuable to lose."

Her words caught me off guard, and I wasn't sure how to respond. There was a sincerity in her voice that made me uncomfortable, as if she cared more about me than she should for someone we'd just met. I forced another smile, nodding in response.

The fort was filled with a tense silence as we set out. The air was thick with the anticipation of the coming battle, and every sound seemed amplified the rustle of leaves, the crunch of boots on gravel, the distant call of a bird.

The hunters moved with practiced ease, their weapons at the ready, their eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of danger.

Nathaniel walked beside me, his usual lightheartedness replaced by a focused determination. We didn't speak much, but there was a silent understanding between us, a trust that had been forged through our shared experiences. It was comforting, knowing that I wasn't alone in this, that I had someone I could rely on.

As we approached the hideout, the atmosphere grew even more tense. The hideout was an old, crumbling structure, half-hidden by overgrown vines and surrounded by dense forest. It was the perfect place for a group of rogue demons to hide out, and the sight of it sent a shiver down my spine.

The hunters spread out, surrounding the building and moving into position. Nathaniel and I stayed close to Garrick, who was leading the charge. He signaled for us to wait, his eyes scanning the area for any signs of movement.

The silence was deafening, every second stretching out into an eternity as we waited for the signal to move in. My heart was pounding in my chest, my senses on high alert. I could feel the demonic energy emanating from the hideout, a dark, oppressive presence that made my skin crawl.

Finally, Garrick gave the signal, and we moved in. The hunters were quick and efficient, bursting through the doors and into the hideout with practiced precision. Nathaniel and I followed close behind, our weapons at the ready.

The interior of the hideout was just as eerie as the exterior. The walls were covered in strange symbols, painted in what looked like dried blood. The air was thick with the scent of decay, and the floor was littered with bones and discarded weapons. It was clear that this place had seen more than its fair share of violence.

As we moved deeper into the hideout, the tension in the air grew thicker. We could feel the presence of the demons, lurking just out of sight, waiting for the right moment to strike. My grip tightened on my weapon, my eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of movement.

And then, they attacked.

The demons came at us from all sides, their eyes glowing with a malevolent light. They were smaller than the ones we had faced before, but they were fast and ferocious, their claws slashing through the air with deadly precision.
