Chapter 60 - Closeness

The next morning, Nathaniel and I reached a remote village near the border where rogue demon sightings had been reported. The village was small and nestled in a valley, surrounded by dense forests. The houses were simple, built from wood and stone, and the villagers moved about their daily routines with an air of nervousness.

As we walked into the village, the villagers eyed us warily. Nathaniel and I approached an elderly man who seemed to be the village elder. He was hunched over, his face lined with age and worry.

"Good morning," I greeted him with a warm smile. "We're here to help with the rogue demon problem. Can you tell us what's been happening?"

The elder hesitated, his eyes darting around as if checking for eavesdroppers. "Demons... they've been attacking our livestock, scaring the children. We've tried to fend them off, but they're relentless."

Nathaniel stepped forward, his tone reassuring. "We're here to stop them. Any information you can give us will help."

The elder sighed, finally relenting. "Follow me."

He led us to a small gathering of villagers. They were scared and reluctant to talk, but with some gentle coaxing, they began to share their experiences. The demons had been attacking at night, their eyes glowing in the darkness. They left claw marks on the walls and doors, and their presence was accompanied by a faint, eerie energy.

"Has anyone seen where they come from?" I asked, trying to piece together their stories.

A young woman, clutching a small child to her chest, spoke up. "They come from the forest. We've seen shadows moving among the trees."

Nathaniel nodded, exchanging a look with me. "Thank you. We'll investigate the forest and see if we can find any traces of them."

We left the village and headed towards the outskirts, the dense forest looming ahead of us. The air was thick with tension as we moved through the underbrush, our senses on high alert.

As we explored the forest, we found signs of the rogue demons. Claw marks gouged into tree trunks, broken branches littering the ground, and an unsettling energy that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. We followed the trail, the signs becoming more frequent and ominous.

Suddenly, we heard a rustling in the bushes ahead. Nathaniel and I drew our weapons, ready for whatever was coming. A small, weak-looking rogue demon emerged, its eyes glowing with malevolence. It hissed at us, baring its sharp teeth.

Nathaniel lunged forward, his sword gleaming in the dappled sunlight. The demon dodged, but I was ready. I swung my crossbow around and fired a bolt, hitting the demon in the leg. It screeched, lashing out with its claws. Nathaniel and I moved in unison, our training kicking in. He distracted it while I circled around, delivering the final blow with my dagger.

The demon crumpled to the ground, its body dissolving into a misty shadow. We had managed to subdue it and send it back to the demon realm.

"Nice work, Aeliana," Nathaniel said, breathing heavily. "You handled that perfectly."

I smiled modestly, though I was pleased with his praise. "Thanks, but it was a team effort."

We continued to explore the forest, finding more signs of rogue demon activity but no other demons. As the sun began to set, we decided to set up camp for the night. We found a small clearing, and Nathaniel started a fire while I set up our bedrolls.

The fire crackled, casting a warm glow on the trees around us. I stared into the flames, lost in thought. The day's events had been intense, and the proximity of Nathaniel during the fight had left me feeling a strange mix of exhilaration and unease.

Nathaniel noticed my distraction and sat down next to me. "You okay, Aeliana? You seem a bit off."

I looked at him, his face illuminated by the firelight. There was genuine concern in his eyes. "I'm fine, just... thinking."

"About the mission?" he asked, leaning back on his hands.

"Yeah, something like that," I replied, evading the true source of my thoughts. I appreciated his concern, but I didn't want to delve into my feelings about Ciara right now. Not when we had a mission to focus on.

We sat in silence for a while, the crackling of the fire the only sound. The forest around us was eerily quiet, as if holding its breath. I tried to push thoughts of Ciara out of my mind, but it was hard. The memory of her strong arms around me, her breath tickling my ear, was maddening.

Nathaniel broke the silence. "You know, this mission... it feels different. More personal."

I nodded, understanding what he meant. The rogue demons were a threat not just to the villagers but to our entire realm. It was up to us to find out what was causing this surge and stop it.

"Yeah, it does," I agreed. "We need to get to the bottom of this."

Nathaniel smiled, his confidence infectious. "We will. And we'll do it together."

I smiled back, feeling a bit more at ease. Nathaniel had a way of making even the most dire situations feel manageable. I was grateful to have him by my side. The warmth of the fire and the comfort of his presence made the forest seem less threatening.

Nathaniel shifted closer to me, the crackling of the fire the only sound between us. The night was cool, and I found myself shivering slightly. Without a word, Nathaniel reached out and took my hand in his. His touch was warm and steady, a stark contrast to the chill in the air.

I glanced at him, surprised by the gesture. His eyes met mine, and there was a softness there, a silent question. The tension between us was palpable, a mix of familiarity and something new, something unspoken.

"It's going to be okay," he said softly, his thumb gently rubbing the back of my hand. "We'll figure this out."

I nodded, feeling a strange mix of emotions. Nathaniel had always been a friend, a comrade in arms, but this felt different. His closeness was comforting, and I found myself leaning into it, allowing myself to draw strength from his presence.

For a moment, we sat in silence, the only sounds the fire and the distant rustle of leaves. Nathaniel's hand in mine was a simple gesture, but it carried a weight of reassurance and solidarity. It was as if he was silently telling me that we were in this together, no matter what.

As the night wore on, the tension between us eased into a comfortable companionship. I was grateful for his support, for his unwavering confidence in our ability to handle the mission. But beneath that gratitude, there was something else, a nagging thought I couldn't quite shake.

Nathaniel's touch was warm and steady, but my mind kept drifting back to Ciara. The memory of her strong arms around me, her breath against my ear, was maddening. The tension I felt now was different, more subdued. With Ciara, it had been electric, undeniable.

I squeezed Nathaniel's hand, offering him a small smile. "Thanks for being here, Nathaniel. It means a lot."

"Anytime, Aeliana," he replied, his voice low and sincere. "We're a team."

I appreciated his words, the solidarity in his gaze. But as I stared into the fire, lost in thought, I couldn't help but compare the feelings swirling inside me. Nathaniel was steady, reliable, and his closeness was comforting. But with Ciara, it had been something else entirely.

I sighed softly, the realization settling in. I was feeling more things when I was with Ciara. That's weird.
