Chapter 27 - Let's wait for Ciara

Sitting at my desk, I leaned back, letting out a long sigh. These last three days had been... surprisingly peaceful. No Ciara in sight. That heartbreaker hadn't crossed my path, and I was starting to feel a semblance of normalcy returning. I should have been thrilled, but there was a nagging sense of unease that I couldn't shake.

Why did I feel relieved? Was it because of the alcohol-induced haze from a few nights ago? The memory of almost giving in to Ciara's intoxicating presence made my stomach churn. What the hell was wrong with me? I wasn't some lovesick fool.

It had to be the alcohol messing with my head. Ciara had always been trouble, a relentless flirt who never took anything seriously. And here I was, allowing her to invade my thoughts. Maybe I needed a break, a distraction, something to clear my head.

For now, I had to focus on work. Today's task was monumental: sorting through a pile of documents that someone had decided to mix up. Prisoner records and soldier files were scattered all over the place, creating a chaotic mess. I rolled up my sleeves and got to work, diving into the sea of paperwork.

I sorted through the documents one by one, meticulously organizing them into separate piles. The prisoner records detailed their offenses, sentences, and locations. I had to cross-reference these with the soldiers' assignments to ensure no mix-ups occurred. It was tedious, but necessary. The monotonous task gave me time to think, to process the whirlwind of emotions I had been experiencing.

As I sifted through the files, I couldn't help but wonder about Ciara. Where had she been? Why hadn't she shown up? Not that I missed her, of course. It was just... curious. She was always so present, so in-your-face. Her absence was almost deafening.

I continued working, my hands moving methodically through the papers. Each document brought me closer to finishing, to reclaiming some sense of order. The hours passed, and I finally placed the last file in its rightful place. A wave of relief washed over me. I leaned back in my chair, stretching my arms above my head. Task accomplished.

Just as I was about to enjoy a well-deserved break, the door creaked open, and Nathaniel walked in. His presence was both comforting and disconcerting. After the incident at the bar, he had come to apologize yesterday. I still wasn't sure how I felt about him. There was a certain charm about Nathaniel, but something about him made me wary.

"Hey, Aeliana," he greeted, a soft smile on his face.

"Hey, Nathaniel," I replied, trying to sound casual. "What brings you here?"

"I just wanted to check on you," he said, his tone sincere. "After everything that happened... I wanted to make sure you're okay."

I nodded, appreciating his concern. "I'm fine. Just buried in paperwork. Thanks for stopping by."

He hesitated, as if contemplating something. "You know, about the other night... I really am sorry. I didn't mean to make things awkward."

"It's fine," I reassured him, though a part of me still felt unsure. "Really. Let's just move past it."

Nathaniel nodded, relief evident in his eyes. "Good. I'd hate to think I ruined our friendship over a misunderstanding."

Before I could respond, the door opened again, and a servant stepped in. "Miss Aeliana, Lady Leora requests your presence in her office."

Curiosity piqued, I nodded and stood up. "Thank you. I'll be right there."

I turned to Nathaniel, offering a small smile. "Duty calls. Thanks for checking in."

"Anytime," he replied, his gaze lingering on me for a moment longer than necessary.

As I walked down the corridor towards Leora's office, my mind raced with possibilities. What could she want? I knocked on the door, hearing her call for me to enter. Taking a deep breath, I pushed the door open and stepped inside.

Leora sat behind her desk, two envelopes placed prominently in front of her. She looked up as I entered, her expression unreadable. "Aeliana, the results of your perfect match test are here," she said, her voice calm but serious.

I felt a surge of anxiety. My perfect match. The words seemed to echo in my mind. I approached the desk, but before I could reach for the envelopes, Leora held up a hand to stop me.

"Let's wait for Ciara, please," she said, her tone firm but gentle.

I nodded, feeling a knot of tension form in my stomach. Waiting for Ciara was the last thing I wanted to do, but there was no avoiding it now. All I could do was hope that whatever the results were, they wouldn't turn my world upside down any more than it already had been.

The room seemed to close in around me as I stood there, waiting. The silence was heavy, each second stretching into an eternity. Leora's calm, measured demeanor did little to soothe my nerves. The two envelopes on the desk felt like they held my entire future within their sealed folds.

"Aeliana," Leora began, her voice breaking the tension, "there's something you should know about the Perfect Match system."

I swallowed hard, nodding for her to continue.

"If your perfect match is wealthier or holds a higher status than you," she explained, "you will be required to move in with them. It's part of the system's protocol to ensure compatibility and stability."

The implications of her words hit me like a tidal wave. Move in with them? What if my match was someone completely insufferable? What if... no, I couldn't even think about that. My heart raced, and my mind spun with a thousand possibilities, each one more unsettling than the last.

Leora must have seen the panic in my eyes. "It's for the best," she said softly, though her words offered little comfort. "The system is designed to create the most harmonious matches."

I forced a nod, my throat tight. The idea of uprooting my life, leaving behind my familiar world for the unknown, was terrifying. And to think I might have to live with a stranger, or worse, someone like Nathaniel or Ciara...

The door creaked open, breaking the fraught silence. Ciara walked in, her presence filling the room with an air of defiance and intensity. She glanced at me, then at Leora, clearly sensing the tension that thickened the air.

"Alright, I'm here," she said, her tone laced with impatience. "Let's get this over with."

The weight of the moment settled heavily on us all as we prepared to uncover the fate that awaited us.
