Chapter 182 - Disguise

I paced my room, arms folded tightly across my chest, annoyance simmering just beneath the surface.

Seriously, it had only been a few hours since Aeliana had left for Leora's castle, and yet here I was, feeling more restless than a caged bird. I didn't really understand why it bothered me so much.

Was I the kind of person who needed someone else's presence to feel complete? Because right now, I felt like a storm cloud trapped in this immaculate castle, a stark contrast to the wild tempest brewing inside me.

The castle walls, with their elegant curves and ethereal architecture, felt like they were closing in on me. I glanced out the window at the sprawling gardens, vibrant blossoms practically dancing in the gentle breeze.

How ironic. Everything outside looked so inviting and free, while I was stuck inside, moping, my mind drifting constantly back to Aeliana, her laughter, and the warmth of her presence.

"Ugh! Why did I let myself get so attached?" I muttered, frustrated. I could already hear Leora's voice in my head, chiding me for my feelings, warning me to focus on my duties instead.

The thought of Leora's practical voice made me huff, further irritating me. "As if I don't know that already," I added sarcastically.

A momentary glimmer of hope flickered in my chest. Today I think Leora had a cooking lesson.

The idea! I couldn't just sit here feeling sorry for myself when Aeliana was enjoying herself in the kitchen, possibly covered in flour, a stark contrast to the poised image Leora often projected.

I smirked at the thought. If I could just see Aeliana, even for a moment, it would soothe my restlessness.

But then reality gripped me. What if Leora caught me? What if she sent me away or started yelling about responsibilities? I groaned again.

"What's the worst that could happen?" I grumbled under my breath, my instincts clashing with the stern warning of my own conscience.

My thoughts raced as I paced, weighing the consequences against my desire. Then it hit me—disguise! I could use magic to teleport and wear something to hide my identity. Leora would never suspect me sneaking into her kitchen.

I gathered my magic my signature purple flame flickering around my fingers like a mischievous sprite.

I always felt lighter when I wielded it, a spark igniting in my core. I quickly summoned a hooded cloak from the recesses of my closet, its deep fabric could cloak me in anonymity. With the hood pulled up, I'd be practically unrecognizable.

Once Draped in the dark attire, I decided to add a bit more to my transformation. I altered my appearance slightly, changing my hair color to a deep mahogany and dulling the shimmer of my irises.

Maybe I would even change my voice just a bit, just to be safe. "I am going to be a ghost in the fog," I chuckled softly to myself, giddy with anticipation.

With a determined nod, I closed my eyes and focused, bringing forth the energy swirling within me, visualizing Leora's kitchen. My magic tingled in response, ready to help me break free from my castle and cross the distance to where my heart longed to be.

In a flash, the familiar sensation of teleportation enveloped me. A rush of air wrapped around me, and before I knew it, the world shifted and reformulated.

When I opened my eyes, the warm scent of baked goods welcomed me, and I found myself standing right inside Leora's castle—a grand kitchen filled with rich hues and polished surfaces.

"Where is she?" I wondered under my breath. The kitchen appeared empty, the only sound was the soft hiss of steam from the freshly baked cakes cooling on the counter. A playful grin crept onto my face.

I must have arrived just in time to enjoy whatever delectable creation Aeliana and Leora had conjured together.

Feeling bold, I tiptoed deeper into the kitchen, eyes scanning the space as if Aeliana might materialize out of thin air.

However, the atmosphere was still, and for a heartbeat, I felt a strange sense of disappointment, as if I had expected to uncover a hidden treasure and found only silence.

But suddenly, the door burst open again, and Aeliana entered, her back turned to me as she busily gathered ingredients for what I assume was more baking. She was completely engrossed, her hair slightly tousled and her cheeks dusted with flour.

The sight of her made my heart race; even from behind, I could feel a magnetism drawing me closer.

"Just a little more sugar," Aeliana murmured to herself, oblivious to my presence. I could hardly contain my excitement. There was something enchanting in the simple act of her working, immersed in her world of creation.

Without thinking, I decided to inject a bit of fun into the moment. "Boo!" I exclaimed, a playful smirk dancing across my lips as I revealed myself from the shadows.

Aeliana spun around, her eyes wide with shock. The instant her gaze locked onto me, the shock turned into a mix of confusion and irritation.

"Who the hell are you?" she yelled, grabbing a nearby frying pan reflexively, brandishing it like a sword.

For a split second, I froze, torn between laughter and surprise as she stood there, determined and defensive. "Wait! Aeliana, it's me! It's Ciara!"

Her grip on the pan tightened as she narrowed her eyes, sizing me up like I was some sort of rogue intruder. "What kind of trick is this?" she demanded, her brows knitted together in annoyance.

"That's not important! Just put the pan down—I'm not here to fight!" I replied, trying to keep my laughter contained as I watched her fierce expression. "I'm here for—"

Before I could finish, Aeliana lunged forward, swinging the pan at me. I ducked just in time, laughter bubbling forth uncontrollably at the absurdity of the situation. "I swear, it's me! Just check the eyes!"

"Prove it!" she shouted, swinging the pan again with surprising speed. I found myself diving behind the counter, dodging the attack.

"Okay! Okay! I've got to calm her down..." I muttered, peeking out as she prepared for another swing. "Aeliana, you're being dramatic!"

"Oh sure, because I see a hooded stranger appearing in the kitchen all the time!" Aeliana shot back, her determination unwavering, but I could see the corner of her lips twitching slightly in the beginnings of a smile.

"Just look closer!" I insisted, feeling a rush of adrenaline with each dodge. Finally, with an exaggerated exhale, I pulled back my hood, revealing my vibrant hair. "See? It's me, just a little different."

Her expression shifted, disbelief lingering a moment before giving way to recognition. "Ciara?!"

"Bingo!" I grinned, bouncing back to my feet. The kitchen was alive with delicious scents, and despite my near confrontation, excitement bubbled within me. "I just had to see you. I couldn't stay away!"

"What were you thinking?" she asked, amusement dancing in her eyes as she lowered the pan, though her brow remained slightly furrowed. "You could have really hurt someone barging in here like that! Not to mention Leora could have a heart attack if she found you!"

"Honestly, I'm just grateful to be here! I missed your face! It's not my fault I wasn't built for patience," I replied offhandedly, laughing lightly as I moved closer to her. The tension from moments ago slipped away, replaced by comfort.

She rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress a smile. "For someone with fancy magic skills, you sure are reckless sometimes."

"Reckless? More like heroic!" I quipped back, stepping closer with a playful grin, inhaling the intoxicating scent of honey cakes wafting through the air. "Plus, I couldn't deny these pastries look amazing."

"Don't even think about trying to glutton your way through them!" Aeliana warned playfully, though the warmth in her gaze betrayed the playful nature of her threat. "You nearly became a frying pan casualty!"

"Worth it," I said, mirroring her smile, the connection between us palpable, warm and welcoming.

Suddenly, a moment of silence enveloped us—everything felt charged, saturated with unspoken emotions. I could feel a spark flicking to life within me, racing through my veins, and I could tell she felt it too.

"Aeliana..." I started softly, echoing the intimacy of our shared laughter. But I wasn't sure how to finish that thought. Would I bridge the gap between friendship and something more?

Before I could grasp the next words, Aeliana stepped closer, that spark between us igniting into a flame—intense, wild.

She dropped the pan on the counter behind her decisively and moved so we were mere inches apart. My heart raced. The temptation drew me in like gravity.

"Ciara," she breathed, and in that fleeting moment, the world around us faded into a blurred backdrop, every sound muted except for the eternal rhythm of our hearts.

"Aeliana," I murmured, barely delighting in the sound of her name slipping off my lips as my breath hitched.

In one swift motion, she reached up, her hands tangling in my hair, and pulled me closer, her lips brushing against mine in an electric connection that silenced every hesitant thought.

The kiss was soft at first, like a whisper carried between us—then it grew in intensity, a fierce expression of everything left unspoken lingering around us.

Every brush of her lips poured warmth through my body, igniting the air like a vivid flame. I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her closer still, finding the right rhythm as melting against her warmth became an intoxicating escape from reality.

We pulled away slightly, breaths mingling, a teasing glimmer of mischief dancing in Aeliana's eyes. "You know, for an intruder, you sure don't act like one," she teased, her dry humor wrapping around me like a pleasant blanket.

"Good to know I make a better friend than an actual adversary," I replied slyly, my smile widening.

But before anything further could unfold, the moment was punctuated by the sound of footsteps echoing toward the kitchen. My heart raced as I realized our little bubble of intimacy was about to be invaded.

"It's Leora! Quick, get back!" Aeliana urged, panic flashing in her eyes as she jumped back and began frantically tidying, almost throwing flour in every direction as she tried to appear casual.

"Okay, okay, I'm hiding!" I said, glancing around the kitchen before darting behind the large pantry door, my heart still thumping loudly in my chest.

We barely had time to catch our breath before the door swung open, and Leora stepped in, looking slightly flustered as she carried a stack of papers. "Aeliana! I've just returned, and—"

But her words cut off abruptly, her gaze sweeping across the kitchen. "What in the world happened here?" she asked, her eyes narrowing with suspicion, not quite noticing me behind the pantry.

"Uh, baking disaster! You know how it goes!" Aeliana replied much too quickly, the hint of panic still threading through her words. The flour on the floor certainly didn't help back up her claim.

"Baking disaster, or is that just an excuse for you to slack off?" Leora's eyebrows twitched upward, unmistakably ready to dig deeper.

"No slacking, just, er, experimenting!" Aeliana responded, flashing Leora the sweetest yet most innocent smile she could muster, as if that alone could divert her attention.

Leora's discerning gaze flickered suspiciously around the kitchen, but she didn't seem to see the hidden intruder behind the pantry. I barely managed to stay silent while my heart raced at being found out.

"What is going on? What have you two been up to?" she pressed, crossing her arms as she surveyed her domain.

"Just the usual," Aeliana replied, forcing a casualness into her demeanor that felt almost comical. "We were just about to sample some honey cakes together!"

"Of course you were," Leora replied, skepticism not fading from her tone. "Just make sure it's finished before any accidents happen."

That was my cue to nudge Aeliana, who seemed a bit frozen near a heap of flour. She caught my movement out of the corner of her eye and finally turned back toward Leora, shaking off the last bit of panic.

"Yes! Of course! All part of the culinary chaos!" Aeliana exclaimed, her voice light, trying to dispel any remnants of tension.

Leora narrowed her eyes one last time, but seeing her friend's earnestness, she reluctantly accepted. "Alright. Just be careful. I'll be in my study if you need anything."

As she departed, Aeliana turned to me, a mix of relief and amusement spilling across her face. "That was close!"

I peeked out from the pantry, laughing quietly at the absurdity of our near-miss. "But enjoyable! Not what I had intended when I came here, but I'm all for adventure!"

"Definitely an adventure, just the kind I didn't expect. You scared me half to death! You need to warn a girl before deciding to teleport in!" Aeliana shot back lightheartedly, shaking her head.

"And you need to put down those pans! I might not walk in here uninvited next time if you keep swinging them around," I replied, matching her laughter as I finally emerged from my hiding spot.

"Fair point! So… what now?" Aeliana asked, her eyes sparkling with delight.

"Well, since you're obviously going to need help with those honey cakes, I'm going to lend my—slightly more graceful abilities, and we'll try our best to avoid any future frying pan incidents!"

We both burst into laughter again, the light air around us soothing all previous frustrations, our camaraderie growing in the warmth of shared secrets.

And right there in that bustling kitchen, a beautiful dance of flavors, friendship, and longing intertwined, promising that the day would only get better from here.
