Chapter 161 - Movie night

As I stepped into my living room, I felt a chaotic swirl of emotions. Elation at finally being with Ciara made me dizzy, but that excitement was soon overshadowed by an impending sense of doom. I wasn't ready for my family's enthusiastically intrusive welcome.

As they rushed towards us, I could already see the teasing glints in their eyes, ready to pounce on the fact that I was now officially dating Ciara.

"Look who it is!" my mom chirped, her voice laced with too much excitement. "It's our favorite duo! Aeliana and Ciara! Oh my goodness, I can hardly contain myself!"

I groaned silently, my cheeks already flushing hot against my will. It wasn't just the fact that I had announced our relationship I could barely handle my parents' endless teasing, especially about anything that involved emotions or affection.

"Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad," I muttered, trying to sound nonchalant, while I practically melted into the floor.

"Look at you two! Just 'colleagues' my foot!" Dad declared, his booming laughter filling the room. He turned to me, arms crossed over his chest, giving me that knowing dad stare. "Who knew my little girl was growing up so fast?"

I could feel my body heat rising as I rolled my eyes. "Can we not do this right now?" I asked, attempting to sound stern but failing miserably when my voice came out as a half-hearted whine.

Dad just smirked, ignoring my protest. "You don't want me to embarrass you in front of your girlfriend?"

"Nope!" I shot back, shooting him a glare. But deep inside, I was wrestling with my emotions. I genuinely felt lucky to be here with Ciara, to have taken that step with her. I just wished we could share this moment without it feeling like an episode of a cheesy family sitcom.

My younger sister Lily then dashed into the room with a gleeful grin, eyes wide with shock. "You're actually dating?!" she squealed, a mix of disbelief and excitement in her tone. "I've been waiting for this forever! I thought I was the only one who saw the connection!"

I facepalmed, feeling utterly mortified. "Thank you, Lily, but could you please keep your voice down? You're going to give me a heart attack," I mumbled, though part of me appreciated her enthusiasm.

"No way! This is the best news ever!" she continued, her excitement escalating as she sidled up to us, practically vibrating in place. "Aeliana and Ciara! This is all I've ever wanted!"

"Thanks, I think?" Ciara chuckled beside me, her eyes sparkling with amusement as she took in the chaos unfolding in my living room.

"Ladies, how about a celebratory family movie night?" Mom proposed, practically clasping her hands together in glee. "We can't let this exciting news pass by without a toast, or in our case, movie popcorn!"

"Ah, yes, because nothing says 'celebration' like popcorn kernels, sugar," I muttered sarcastically but knew they were already set on the idea. My mom's face lit up like a holiday tree, and that meant only one thing: there would be no escape tonight.

"Perfect! I'll grab the snacks!" Mom chirped, bustling towards the kitchen. Dad was quick to follow her lead, muttering something about the "best popcorn recipe" from the good old days.

I turned to Lily, who was still practically bouncing on her heels. "Aren't you supposed to be doing homework or something, Lily? Maybe the fate of your grades depends on it?"

"Pffft, homework schmoework," she replied, rolling her eyes dismissively. "This is way more important." I couldn't help but smirk at her enthusiasm, even if I was internally cringing.

Then, I turned to Ciara, trying to muster a serious expression. "Are you ready for the onslaught?" I asked, unable to hide my anxiety.

She chuckled, taking a step closer to me. "Oh, I've faced worse in the field, Aeliana. Just think of it as a wild mission."

"Not exactly the kind of mission I'd prefer," I said, crossing my arms as I leaned back against the wall. "More like a psychological experiment."

As the two of us leaned against the wall, only moments passed before my mom returned, a giant bowl of popcorn in one hand and a DVD in the other. "What are we watching?! Something romantic to celebrate this momentous occasion?"

"Mom, please," I groaned, feeling the heat radiate from my cheeks. "Anything but that! It's a horror movie night!"

"Yes!" Lily clapped her hands in delight. "Let's terrify Aeliana to celebrate her love life!"

"Why does nothing ever go as planned?" I murmured under my breath, unable to hide the glimmer of frustration.

"Because we're your family, and this is what we do!" Dad shouted back, carrying another bowl filled with candy. "Now, who's ready for a marathon?"

As the afternoon light heaved into twilight, we settled down, and I made sure to sit on the opposite side of the couch from Ciara.

I knew my parents wouldn't drop the teasing once the movie started my best chance at sanity was to keep some distance between us.

Lily, in her excitement, plopped down right in the middle. "Can I have the first popcorn?!" she asked as she grabbed a handful, shoveling the buttery kernels into her mouth.

"Sure, why not?" I replied, feeling the need to shield Ciara from my family's antics.

The movie started, and with it, a cacophony of chaos descended. My parents behaved as if they were on a game show, loudly commenting and cracking jokes throughout the film.

At one point, my mom burst out laughing at an especially silly jump scare, turning to beam at us. "Aeliana, isn't this the perfect movie for you? Too bad you'll have Ciara to hold onto if you get scared!"

I groaned audibly, squeezing my eyes shut at that notion. "Mom!" I whined, feeling mortified.

"But seriously," she continued, "I could see you two snuggling on the couch for the next horror movie marathon!"

"I'd rather not snuggle while you are both watching! It's mortifying!" I protested, wanting to bury my face in a pillow.

"I think it's adorable," Dad chimed in from the other side. "At least we know you're not just 'colleagues' anymore!"

Whatever fragile sense of normalcy in this scuffle was shattered, and the movie was reduced to a backdrop of bubbling laughter and teasing as Dad leaned over and exaggeratedly whispered to Mom,

"Remember when you told me you wanted to scare me with a ghost on our first date? Maybe we should do that again for our lovebirds here!"

Ciara flashed me a conspiratorial grin, but I could only groan in response. "You two need to stop talking way too embarrassing!"

"I'm with Aeliana!" Lily cut in, feigning a serious expression. "It's seriously distracting. What if the ghost from that movie shows up?!"

"Now that's a plot twist," Mom chimed in, the sparkle in her eyes illuminating the room further. "A tattooed ghost who helps with love confessions? Now that would be a movie I'd watch!"

I threatened to drown myself in popcorn but instead shifted in irritation, leaning into my space a little further away from Ciara while lapel pinched, hoping the scene would transform into something a little less ridiculous.

"Can't we just enjoy the movie and stop the incessant teasing?" I grumbled about the whirling chaos surrounding us, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Don't be such a grumpy pants, Aeliana!" Dad chuckled. "That's just not how we do things in this family. We celebrate everything, even if it means a little chaos!"

I leaned back, half-heartedly strategizing how to escape this embarrassment without looking like a total spoilsport. "Okay, but keep the focus on the movie, people!"

As the film progressed, Dad continued to make ridiculous comments that practically derailed my sanity. "Is it just me, or does Aeliana have a similar sound to that killer? Do you think she could hold her own in a horror movie like I could?"

"To be fair, you already have the killer instinct down!" Ciara joked, casting a sly smile my way that made my internal conflict only spike further. "And if you ever want to co-star as a ghost, you just let me know, Aeliana!"

"No!" I shouted playfully, trying to regain my reputation as an adult and failing miserably.

Halfway through the movie, I caught a glimpse of Dad leaning over the couch and giving me an exaggerated wink, bringing warmth to my face.

"We know you two would rather be sharing kisses right now. We can help you with a kissing booth if you want!"

"Please. No more kissing booths!" I begged, feeling somewhat defeated.

I merely couldn't bring myself to gaze at Ciara directly and accidentally do the impossible when he hollered. "You're lucky that you didn't go into your more adventurous self!"

As if the universe had selected that precise moment to bless me with a silver lining, I felt Ciara's hand gently squeeze mine.

The warmth of her touch sent a shiver through my body, and I peeked at her, her cheerful demeanor had yet to falter, radiating an unyielding brightness that made everything around us fade a little.

That sudden connection melted a bit of my stubborn stoniness, reducing the impending storm inside me to hush. "It's just my family being my family," I whispered, taking a breath to steady the tide of embarrassment.

"Yeah, but it's your incredible family," she replied, effortlessly leaning closer. "I'm glad to share these moments with you, Aeliana, chaos and all."

And as the evening marinated in playful banter and family love, I realized how absurdly beautiful it was to have found someone like Ciara. I shifted slightly, hesitating as I exchanged uncertain glances filled with warmth.

Maybe this chaotic family movie night wasn't so bad after all. It could even be quite fun if only I could tear down my wall of grumpiness and actually take the plunge.

As awkward as the moments were, somewhere in that darkness wrapped up in pure hilarity, I found the courage to lean closer to her, forcing myself to bask in delightful chaos with a pinch of humor.

Because with Ciara, I could embrace that laughter in a way that felt genuine.

And while it would undoubtedly become a memory too good not to hold onto, I knew I could lean into the joy of being completely me. One movie night at a time.
