Chapter 8 - Chapter 7: Split at the Crossroads of Destiny

The blizzard subsided, leaving a haunting silence across the vast Antarctic ice sheet. Three months had passed since the expedition team was scattered, each fighting for survival in the harsh wilderness. Rian and Salsa, once brimming with spirit and optimism, now appeared as mere shadows of their former selves. Their clothes were tattered, their faces etched with exhaustion and despair, yet the embers of determination still flickered in their eyes.

Before them, the mysterious alien panel pulsed with a mesmerizing blue light. Strange symbols whirled, a captivating dance that finally revealed a path—a gaping hole in the floor, emanating an eerie green glow that was both promising and menacing. A low rumble echoed from the depths, shaking the ruins and causing them to gasp. The green light intensified, casting grotesque shadows on the walls. Something called to them from below, something powerful and mysterious.

"Ready?" Rian's voice rasped, thick with cold and tension.

Salsa nodded, her fingers intertwining tightly with Rian's. Together, they plunged into the abyss, towards an unknown fate.

Meanwhile, on the endless expanse of snow, Anya sat beside Nikolai's lifeless body. The storm had passed, leaving behind a piercing cold and a grief that froze her heart. She wiped the snow from Nikolai's face, tears streaming down her cheeks."

I will find them, Nikolai," she whispered, "I promise."

Anya rose, Nikolai's rifle slung over her shoulder. She gazed towards the ruins, the same green glow beckoning her. With burning determination, she stepped forward, ready to face whatever awaited her. But within her heart, shadows of the past began to emerge.

FLASHBACK - FIVE YEARS EARLIER

Nikolai, in his crisp military uniform, stood before Professor Throne in a secret room. On the table, an alien artifact identical to the one found by Rian and Salsa pulsed with blue light.

"Professor, are we doing the right thing?" Nikolai asked, doubt etched on his face.

Professor Throne smiled thinly. "This isn't about right or wrong, Nikolai. It's about the advancement of science. And VaultaCorp will pay handsomely for this artifact."

Nikolai fell silent, remembering VaultaCorp's sweet promises of technological advancement and human well-being. But he also remembered Anya's warnings about the potential dangers posed by this artifact.

"But Anya..."

"Anya is too idealistic," Professor Throne interrupted. "She doesn't understand the real world. We must seize this opportunity, Nikolai. This is our chance to change the world."

Nikolai hesitated, but finally nodded. He had chosen his path, a path that would lead to betrayal and regret.

INT. ICE CAVE - NIGHT

Professor Throne and Dr. Elara huddled together in the ice cave they had found. A small fire they had built from dry twigs provided a meager warmth against the cold night.

"We need to find a way out of here soon." Professor Throne coughed, his face pale.

"I agree, Professor. But this storm is too strong. We need to wait until it subsides." Dr. Elara clutched a thin blanket, trying to warm herself.

Professor Throne paused, then looked at Dr. Elara with a sharp gaze. "Elara," his voice was hoarse, "there's something I need to tell you."

Dr. Elara frowned, confused by Professor Throne's sudden change in demeanor.

"I... I'm the one who caused the damage to Rian's expedition vehicle." Professor Throne lowered his head, guilt gnawing at him.

Dr. Elara was stunned, unable to believe what she had just heard. "What do you mean, Professor?"

"I... I sabotaged the vehicle. I didn't want this expedition to continue. I knew the risks we were facing were too great." Professor Throne sighed heavily, the burden he had been carrying finally lifted.

Dr. Elara was silent, trying to digest this shocking information. She knew Professor Throne had always been worried about the team's safety, but she never imagined he would take such drastic action.

Suddenly, they heard a rumble from outside the cave. Dr. Elara peeked out and saw a strange green light enveloping the night sky.

"Professor, look!" Dr. Elara exclaimed, her eyes wide.

Professor Throne tried to get up, but his body was too weak. He could only see the strange light from inside the cave.

"That light... it's like the one from the artifact." Professor Throne whispered, his mind racing.

Dr. Elara nodded, her thoughts in turmoil. She had to decide quickly, whether to stay with Professor Throne who had endangered the team, or to search for Rian and Salsa who might need her help.
