Chapter 1 - The Great Collision

James Lin, a handsome astrophysicist in his late twenties, slumped in his desk chair, his eyes fixed on the computer screen as the dawn light crept into the room.

James Lin had a slim athletic body. His hair was dark brown, messy and unkempt. His eyes were bright brown,almond-shaped and intense. His face had chiseled features, strong jawline with smooth, golden-brown skin.

The soft glow of the monitor illuminated his exhausted face, etched with concern. He had been up all night, fueled by coffee and a sense of urgency, as he observed the satellite data that hinted at an ominous phenomenon lurking in the depths of space.

The creak of the bed behind him signaled his wife Marie's awakening. Her sleepy voice whispered, "James, how long have you been up? You know sleep is just as crucial as work. Quit it and come to bed."

Marie Lin was also in her late twenties. She had a petite and slender build. Her hair was honey-blonde, shoulder-length and wavy.

Her eyes were bright blue, round and expressive. Her face compromised of delicate features and smattered freckles across her nose. Her skin,porcelain-smooth, with a warm golden glow, brought her unquestionable beauty to life.

The temptation of her warm embrace and the comfort of their bed was hard to resist, but James's mind raced with the implications of his impending discovery.

He took a deep breath, his eyes still fixed on the screen, and replied, "Honey, trust me, I crave the sweetness of sleep and the warmth of lying by your side, but something bad is coming, and I must discover what it is ."

Marie sighed, her voice laced with a mix of concern and frustration. "Oh, you and your hero complex...don't work yourself to death." She rolled over and closed her eyes, leaving James to his quest for answers.

The hours ticked by, and soon it was sunrise. Marie woke up to find James still on his computer. She rose from bed and entered the bathroom.

While in the shower she started talking to James, "James, you need to drive Frank to school today. My car is acting up."

James hesitated, his fingers hovering over the keyboard, reluctant to tear himself away from the mystery. Frank was their son, who James rarely spent time with due to his job.

But Marie's next words stung when she got no reply from him the first time, "Your workaholic behavior is making you a stranger to our son!!!."

She beckoned him to join her in the shower, her voice firm but gentle,"Get off that computer and come over here, now!!!."

With a sigh, James finally surrendered, leaving his computer to its beeps and chimes.

As they dressed and prepared to leave, the computer suddenly began to let out insistent alerts that pierced the air.James was busy trying to pick a dress from his closet. He dressed casually, often wearing rumpled clothes that were mostly covered by his white lab coat.

Marie wearing an elegant and stylish outfit with minimal makeup due to her natural beauty, walked up to the loud beeping computer, switching it off before James could notice. She needed his mind to shift gears to the day ahead.

In the car, Frank's bubbly chatter filled the air as James drove through the gates of their community and onto the open road.

The highway stretched out before them, a ribbon of asphalt that seemed to lead to a destination both simple and clear.

They finally got to a bridge with loads of traffic which would surely delay them.As they inched along the bridge, the hum of engines and honking of horns created a symphony of frustration, a cacophony that seemed to reverberate through every molecule of air.

The slow crawl of cars felt like a torture, each second ticking by with the pace of a snail. Marie turned to James, her eyes searching for a way to pierce the tension that had settled between them like a thick fog.

She tilted her head, her gaze falling on their son Frank, who was engrossed in his toy car, his tiny hands moving with a precision that belied his age.

"James, use this chance to catch up with Frank," she said, her voice laced with a hint of exasperation. "Ask him about school."

James however hesitated, his gaze fixed on their son's absorbed face. "I don't want to interrupt his playtime, Marie," he replied, his voice laced with a hint of defensiveness.

Marie's brow furrowed, her eyes narrowing slightly as she spoke. "You always find excuses to avoid spending time with your family, James."

James tried to calm her down,"Marie please listen, this project am heading is unlike anything I have ever dealt with.Once am done, I promise to spend all my time with you guys."

Before the conversation could escalate, their car's radio crackled to life, spewing static noises and chaos like a wild animal unleashed from its cage.

The ground trembled, a low rumble that seemed to shake the very foundations of the earth. The sky darkened, a sudden eclipse that seemed to swallow the sun whole. The darkness was utter, a blanket of blackness that seemed to suffocate the world.

In this sudden void, James strained to see his family, his eyes straining to pierce the darkness. But it was like trying to see through a veil of blackness, an impenetrable shroud that seemed to hide everything from view.

And then, without warning, a powerful gravity fluctuation suddenly wrenched the cars into the air, suspending them like toys in a giant's hand followed by shockwaves that shattered their windshields.

The effects of the fluctuating gravity suddenly stopped, allowing the free fall of the cars. They came crushing down, as the sound of crunching metal filled the air like a deadly symphony.

When the darkness lifted, James's world was turned upside down - literally. His car was a twisted wreck, a crumpled mass of metal that seemed to have been put through a wringer.

The force of the fluctuating gravity had ripped him from the driver's seat, sending him crashing to the ground with a bone-crunching impact.

Dazed and broken, he lay there, his vision blurry, his body screaming in agony. Yet, with a Herculean effort, he summoned the strength to crawl back to the wreckage, his heart racing with a father's desperation.

As he reached the car, he saw his son, Frank, unconscious but alive, strapped in the backseat. A surge of relief washed over him, but it was short-lived.

His wife, Marie, was nowhere to be seen. Panic set in, his voice hoarse as he screamed her name, scanning the devastation around him.

The road was a bloody mess, littered with the dead, the dying, and the shattered remnants of what once were cars.James's cries were lost in the chorus of pain and despair that filled the air as other severely injured survivors let out harrowing screams for help.

He stumbled around, his eyes scouring the wreckages, his heart heavy with fear. Where was Marie? Was she alive? The questions swirled in his mind like a maelstrom, threatening to consume him.

Finally, he returned attention to his son, gently pulling him out of the car. Frank's eyes fluttered open, his tiny face contorted in confusion. "Daddy, where's Mommy?" he asked, his voice trembling.

James's heart cracked, the pain of not knowing where his wife was, felt too much to bear. "I...I don't know," he stammered, his voice barely audible. The silence that followed was oppressive, a heavy blanket that suffocated the world.

James held his son close, his eyes scanning the horizon, praying for a miracle, praying that Marie would emerge from the wherever she was, alive and unharmed.

That hope slowly began to fade as the only sounds heard were the creaking of twisted metal, the moans of the injured, and the deafening silence of the unknown.
