Chereads / FINDING LOVE AGAIN / Chapter 14 - 14

Chapter 14 - 14

The morning sun painted the Foster mansion with hues of gold as Madison, Liam Foster's preteen daughter, departed for another day of classes. Maya, her dedicated nanny, watched her go with a mix of affection and a sense of responsibility. The grandeur of the mansion seemed to settle into a tranquil rhythm after Madison's departure.

As the day unfolded, Madison's absence created an unusual hush within the mansion. The quietude was interrupted by the insistent ring of the telephone in the living room. With a quick glance at the caller ID displaying the school's number, Maya picked up, her maternal instincts already on high alert.

"Hello, this is Maya; Madison's nanny speaking," she greeted with practised calm.

The school receptionist, on the other end, explained that Madison had found herself entangled in a minor incident with another student. Although no one was seriously hurt, the school deemed it necessary for a parent or legal guardian to pick her up. The news triggered a swift response from Maya, her professional demeanour taking over.

"Thank you for informing me. I'll be there shortly to pick her up," she assured the receptionist, ending the call. The responsibility of being Madison's guardian weighed heavily on Maya's shoulders as she made her way to Liam's home office.

Knocking gently, she entered to find Liam engrossed in his work, the soft glow of the desk lamp illuminating the room. "Mr. Foster, there's an issue at Madison's school. They've requested that a parent or legal guardian pick her up," Maya informed him, her voice composed.

Liam, with his steely gaze fixed on the computer screen, gestured for her to continue without uttering a word. The room held a palpable tension as Maya stood there, awaiting his response.

"I am her legal guardian while she's under my care. I'll go get her with the driver," Maya declared, her tone assertive.

Without breaking his concentration, Liam rose from his chair and closed the distance between them. In an unexpected move, he seized her wrist with an intensity that caught Maya off guard. He pulled her arm behind her back, and the sudden closeness sent a jolt through her.

"What did you mean by that statement? Legal guardian?" Liam's voice was low, a mixture of curiosity and irritation.

Maya hesitated, feeling the warmth of Liam's breath on her bare shoulders. "It slipped out, Mr. Foster. I meant that I have the authority to act on your behalf when it comes to Madison's well-being."

She lied, even if she meant it to step on his toes.

Liam's grip tightened, and he spoke with restrained frustration, "You have no idea how much I hate liars."

The charged atmosphere crackled between them, and in a daring move, Maya asked, "Does that make you hate me now?"

Surprisingly, Liam chuckled, releasing his grip.

Maya, with a smirk playing on her lips, continued to probe. "You don't know what you really want, Mr. Foster. You hate the truth as much as you hate lies. How is that even possible?"

Liam sighed, turning away. "The truth is bitter, lies are delusional. I hate both. But, again, it depends on the situation."

A playful smile danced on Maya's lips. "Do you hate me, Mr. Foster?"

Liam groaned, turning his back to her. "I hate that you try to get on my nerves."

Undeterred, Maya pressed on, "We can have this conversation another time. Right now, I have to go get Madison from school with your driver." She didn't wait for a response, assuming his silent consent as she headed toward the door.

"Go ahead," Liam finally conceded, his tone resigned.

Before leaving, Maya added, "Please, watch over my son, Ryan."

Liam scoffed, "I can't remember when I applied for a nanny. Find someone else to babysit him. Besides, I'm not so good with kids."

Maya couldn't resist a sarcastic remark. "No wonder you're ruining Madison on purpose. Respectfully." With a confident stride, she exited his home office, leaving Liam to grapple with the lingering echoes of their heated exchange.

As Maya made her way to fetch Madison, the mansion seemed to carry the weight of unspoken tensions. The butterflies in her stomach fluttered nervously, and she couldn't ignore the rush of conflicting emotions triggered by Liam's unexpected aggression. Liam, on the other hand, remained in his office, the air thick with unspoken desires and suppressed feelings.

The scene unfolded with a delicate dance of emotions and unsaid words, leaving the mansion wrapped in an intricate tapestry of secrecy and unspoken connections.
